Thursday Thirteen #3–Hot Fun in the Summertime Movies

By APOOO • Aug 13th, 2008 • Category: APOOO Features, Hot Fun in the Summertime, Thursday ThirteenEmail This Post Email This PostPrint This Post Print This Post

In keeping with APOOO’s August theme of HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME, today I will spotlight 13 of my favorite childhood movies.  During the summer, especially during my middle school/junior high years, neighborhood friends and I would trek to the neighborhood theatre every Tuesday (even in the rain) to see the weekly matinee.  Some of these movies had even been around forever and a day, but they would show them at the local theatre, because they were so popular, for basically pennies.  See, the money wasn’t in the movie, it was giving in us kids a good deal on the ticket price to get us to the theatre where we would buy hot, buttered popcorn, hot dogs, and jujubes.  LOL.  Anyway, many of the movies on my list came out earlier than summer, but since my allowance didn’t cover them at the full price, I had to wait until summer to see them when they price of a ticket was like $ 0.50.  Yep…that cheap…unlike today…with ticket prices being $8.00 and higher.  And, if you want to eat, you better take your snacks with you.  LOL.  So, grab your popcorn and come stroll down memory lane with me…and hmmm if you weren’t born during the years listed below, you can rent all of these movies at your favorite video store.

Thirteen FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MOVIES

  1. 1966–The Singing Nun
  2. 1967–Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
  3. 1968–With Six You Get Eggroll
  4. 1969–The Love Bug
  5. 1970–Love Story
  6. 1971–Shaft (Isaac Hayes RIP)
  7. 1972–Sounder
  8. 1973–Live and Let Die
  9. 1974–Claudine
  10. 1975–Lady Sings the Blues
  11. 1976–All the President’s Men
  12. 1977–Jaws
  13. 1978–Animal House

  1. I absolutely love Claudine, before my time, but none-the-less I loved it. The Love Bug was good as well.

Independence Day was so awesome for me as a summer movie. Anything with Will Smith is good, except for the wild west movie.

    Great list.

  18. Great list. Some of those movies I saw, most I didn’t. When we were kids, our mother liked going to movies, so she’d load all us kids into the station wagon and off we’d go to the drive in movie. I don’t remember Dad ever going along. When we were little we’d go to sleep in the car, and as we grew up we stayed awake more. I remember many times driving out of the drive-in and all the red lights lined up down the road in front of us. Haha. Thanks for the memories.

  19. When I was a kid, my favorite summer matinee movies were the Apple Dumpling Gang and Escape from Witch Mountain. Nowadays, I’m afraid if they don’t involve talking woodland creatures, then I don’t get to see any movies in the theatres.

  29. You always have the most interesting lists - I loved all of those movies too. I think the one that left the biggest impression on me was “She’s got to Have it”. I wish I could tell you how or why, it just gave me the idea that I didn’t really have to put up with the crap I was putting up with. Some of that was that this little guy could make this movie, in that time, at that place…. Made me feel that anything was possible.

    :)

    Happy TT!

  30. Oh I love that list. We’re old movie freaks, so that brings us to a time we enjoy!! Great TT!!

  54. Absolutely love Claudine, I always try to watch it when it comes on TV One. Love Jaws, that movies still scares me. Lady Sings the Blues is a classic.

  55. Oh Lord, I’m So Old.
    My favorite childhood movies are:
    My Friend Flicka
    Ring of Bright Water
    101 Dalmatians
    The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes
    Flubber
Every James Bond movie up until Never Say Never Again (they played a different one at the Kings Plaza movie theater every Wednesday one summer)
    and then I discovered Blaxploitation…
which are NOT “childhood movies” yet I Saw Them In My Childhood.
(Another summer at the Gates in Bed-Stuy they had a different double header every Wed. They had roaches in the popcorn and rats scurrying around on the floor but the movie was like $1.50. The day The Education of Sonny Carson came out there was a fire in the theater and me and my little sister got separated)
    Super Fly
    Together Brothers
    The Mack
    Hell Up In Harlem
    The Education of Sonny Carson
    Claudine (still a fave!)
    Shaft

  56. Wow…sis are you older than me…lol. Good list and thanks for sharing.

  57. Happy TT and thanks for a nice list! Though I couldn’t say that “Jaws” was a particular favorite of my childhood ;) My parents wouldn’t allow me to see those films.
