Wow, look at Serena Williams all grown up! Have you heard? There’s a new book titled the BlackList by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders which is due out September 16th, 2008.
In The Black List, twenty-five prominent African-Americans of various professions, disciplines, and backgrounds offer their own stories and insights on the struggles, triumphs, and joys of black life in America and, in the process, redefine “black list” for a new century.
These individuals will share their thoughts on what it means to be Black in America, our contributions and influences on the general audience.
Authors who made the list include Toni Morrison, Zane and Suzan-Lori Parks.
Usual suspects include Vernon Jordan, Serena Williams (why not Venus?), Russell Simmons, Sean Combs and Colin Powell.
I was happy to see Faye Wattleton, a woman I’ve admired from afar for years, make the list. And, actually surprised to see Slash made the list. Anyone remember him? He was the guitarist for Guns and Roses with Axel Rose when they made a song titled One in a Million which spews hatred and the N-word.
Althought books of the this type have been written before, The Blacklist sounds interesting; I’m headed to request a review copy for APOOO today.
HBO premieres a documentary of the BlackList tonight, not sure of the time, but if it’s going up against when Michelle Obama gives opening remarks at the Dems Convention, well this might not get the attention it deserves. Then again it will probably air more than once.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Besides the names listed above, without looking at the book description, who else do you think made the list?
Who else would you add to the list?
Is this a book that you think you will be interested in reading? Why or why not?
Which will have your attention this evening–Michelle Obama or the Blacklist? Neither?

angelia
Hey Angelia…and actually none of those individuals made the list.
I was being cheeky about Kwame, I figuered if it were a new list, he certainly would not be on it…no Obama…hmmm
angelia
Yas, like you I’m glad to see Faye Wattleton. I hope the author included scientists, modern-day inventors, and those involved in the world of finance. They’re out there
I’m interested if just to see who was included. I saw Al Sharpton, Okay. I am looking forward to Michelle Obama’s keynote address tonight.
Angelia–lol about Kwame and got it…but no Obama, no Oprah…
Niambi– no scientists or inventors…sigh.
Dera–click on the link in the blog and it will take you to the product description page…some new folks made the list.
I wonder if Alice Walker made the list.. off of the top of my head - Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Johnson, Hmmmm….
I’ll probably try to tape it but i am definately watching the DNC
Cilla–hmmm none of those individuals made the list…I need to read how folks were picked to be part of the ‘list.’
Everyone who I would have thought made the list were mentioned by others. I think its great that he didn’t include the same old standbys. Yes, we admire them for their contributions but I am getting sick of seeing Oprah, Denzel, and Halle, as the ONLY faces of Black America. Why not include those who are just as accomplished but not so “over exposed”. I think Slash is an interesting choice. Its interesting that he was chosen but just as interesting that he accepted. I know that his mother is Black but aside from that I didn’t think he even considered himself part of the African American community. It will be interesting to see what he has to say. I also like the fact that the book isn’t all about Hollywood types, goodness knows we need to focus on dynamic AAs outside of the enntertainment and sports industry as well. I can see purchasing the book. It should make for great conversation.
What time does the opening for the convention supposed to start? I want to see the opening speech too.
Shelia’s last blog post..Love is in the Air
I would say Beyonce, JayZ, TDJakes, Creflo Dollar, Nelson Mandela, Terry McMillian.
I am trying my best to stay up for the speech tonight. I am soooooo sleepy.
Jnette…I hear you on trying to stay awake…if I stay on the computer I can do it…lol…and hmmm none of those folks made the list.
