Thursday Thirteen #6–Head of the Class and School Supplies

Well Labor Day has passed.  Schools back in session.  Summer is over and it is time for me to regroup for another school year.  Recently a girlfriend and I were discussing school supplies and I shared that in the last two years the amount of money I spent on school supplies decreased.  I no longer have to buy Trapper Shooters, lunch boxes(which my kids only used the first week of school), or expensive/designer book packs.  To which my girlfriend responded, ‘just wait until they get ready to head off to college.’  LOL.  That got me to thinking about how much the type of items/supplies required for school has changed significantly since I was last in school…over 20 years ago.  So today’s Thursday Thirteen is dedicated to all the things that were not available when I attended school…or even college.  OH yeah, September’s feature at APOOO is HEAD OF THE CLASS, so each Thursday Thirteen post for September will have something to do with school/education.  But, in the meantime, check out this week’s list and let me know how many of these things would make your list–of HAVE NOTS?

  3. When I was a child I don’t recall anyone having a laptop, digital camera, or an ipod. I remember the rest. Even though the cell phones were huge and the carriers looked like suit cases…lol

  6. We must have gone to school around the same time. We actually got our first microwave when I was in 9th or 10th grade, but I sure didn’t have one in my dorm room in college. Don’t you just love gel pens? I wish they’d had those. But I get to experience many of these school supplies through my students and my own children. We started back the week before Labor Day.

  7. First! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! YAY!! I’m delighted to have just met you and know that you make a real difference in the world - bless you. Also congratulations on your 8 years! whoot! whoot!

I do love school supplies. My newest love is the little bright colored paper tabs - like post it’s but smaller. I almost divorced my husband because he used all my yellow! ;)

  8. Hi! Happy Thursday to you!!

Oh golly, if you’d like to list things that wasn’t around when we were in school, I could probably go back as far as paper! [I'm that old!] We used goatskin. [kidding!!!]

    Great idea for a list.

  9. Its amazing how much has changed over the years. Inever knew digital cameras were considered necessary for school. LOL!

  10. I know I am old but what are Trapper keepers?

    Highlighters

Don’t forget the crayola in 900 colors. I think the most we had was 16.

  11. Hey Rosa…Trapper Keepers are notebooks with folders inside…and they either have a buckle or a zipper for closure…they’re upgraded notebooks…lol.

  12. The reality hit me when Rebecca was in high school and she had to have not just any calculator but one specific to calculus. Back in the mid-90s those suckers cost big time.

  13. laptops - heck - they didn’t even have desktops when I was in school - only monster mainframes that even companies couldn’t afford

not that I am aging myself

  14. I had a word processor in college, but not a computer (had to go to the campus computer lab) and a laptop was non-existent. We had calculators, but we could not use them in class, much less for standardized tests!! I was excited when I got my first Sony Walkman (cassette, not CD). Also, no flat screen tvs.

  15. Kids are allowed to use super glue? that’s a surprise.

  16. Email
    Cell phones/camera phones
White out rollers….like tape….no fuss, best thing ever!
Refrigerator/Microwave combos (just saw this on the Today show….2-in-1)
Laundry sets (pre-measured laundry detergent…also on the Today show)
Online to-do lists, calendars (free and cool organizational tools)
Bookbag with water bottle holders, laptop sections and openings for MP3 players (had one in grad school…very convenient)
WIRELESS connectivity! best thing hands down…
Flash/Jump/Thumb drives (I just found a box of old floppy discs….I don’t have anything to open them with now).

  17. ok…so I have experienced this on so many levels. My oldest is a college freshman…the things this child needed for school. her room was like a mini apartment. complete with flat screen from her grandpa. I did not get to use a calculator is pre calc…but my daughter HAD to purchase a specific $100.00 calculator for her class. Microwave, laptop, frig…did I mention the room is laid out..She is oldest the oldest grandbaby on both sides and since she got a full ride scholarship with books paid for, we all felt she deserved what she wanted…..thank God for the scholarship…her book total was over $900.00 she is a biology major.

My son is ten…his list includes…hand sanitizer, post it notes, specific colored 3prong/2pocket binders, stretch book covers(I remember my parents saving the paper grocery store bags to cover my books…I graduated HS in 1991…it was not THAT long ago, but alot has changed.)

My youngest is 3 and I cringe to think what she will need.
