Aphrodisia: The Nature of Poetic Eroticism by Antwon Brooks is a compilation of feelings expressed through poetry and artwork. Some men have a hard time relaying their innermost feelings for the women they love. Brooks’ poetry allows female readers into the secret emotions that men keep hidden. The rhythm of the poetic flow could be described as the act of making love from the foreplay down to the last tremor felt after experiencing orgasmic pleasure. Aphrodisia is the stimulation of the mind. No physical touch needed to understand the way to touching a woman’s mind, body, and soul. In “Pleasure” the woman is encouraged to think about herself and no one else; not even the man that is about to bring her to a sensual place. Love would not be love if there was not some pain. Even in “poetic eroticism…love that never died” will resurface and cause an unyielding heartache.
Brooks provided an insightful view into the man’s mind. The artwork at the beginning of each chapter was exquisite. I found myself turning back to look at the images and seeing something I did not see the first time I looked at it. While the book was organized well it lacked proper editing. However, I recommend Aphrodisia: The Nature of Poetic Eroticism to readers who enjoy poetry and those who enjoy artwork.
