On this day in 1958, THE KING OF POP was born. Today, August 29th, Michael Jackson turns 50 years old! Wow, a half a century of living and APOOO wishes him 50 more years! CLICK HERE for a video tribute to Michael Jackson.
IT’S THE WEEKEND BABY! If you are anything like me, I know that many of you are looking forward to this long, three day weekend. Actually, a few of you might have taken off today, to enjoy that last summer Friday. (I know summer doesn’t end until mid-September, but after Labor Day it’s all downhill, lol.)
Spend a moment with us, catch up on what’s going on in the book world and find out what we plan to do this weekend. I’ll go first, but feel free to share your plans and leave comments.
Books I plan to purchase or order? None, that I can think of. Oh wait, I need to order a copy of the APOOO September and October BOMs–Going South by Bonnie Glover and the House at Sugar Beach by Helene Cooper.
Books I plan to read this weekend? Hmm…what’s everyone else planning to read? Share your list, maybe I can buddy up with you.
Literary Events I plan to attend this weekend? None, I plan to hang out with family and friends this weekend.
LITERARY NOTES (CLICK ON EACH TITLE to read the full story)
Amazon Buys Shelfari–Mission accomplished…another small techy, start-up social networking site goes big business. I have a Shelfari account but I check it so infrequently that I no longer know why I even set up an account. Anyone else have a Shelfari account, are you active with it? When was the last time you updated your account?
Is Amazon’s Kindle Off to College?–Can you imagine being in college and being able to read your textbooks on a Kindle rather than worrying about lugging around tons of textbooks? Now a Kindle might be a dream come true for many a college student!
Digital Textbooks Might Not Be a Cost-Saver–Oops, I might have spoken too quickly. While e-books might be lighter, sounds like there are other issues with them, like having to print them out if you want a hard-copy of your book. Printing ink and paper can be expensive…
Kindle, So Just How Many Have Been Sold?–Seems no one knows…because amazon.com is being coy about telling folks. Hmmm…this sounds suspect…if they’re selling like hot cakes wouldn’t you want consumers to know…don’t you want the buzz and the sales? So, what’s up with that amazon?
100 Things to Do Before You Die–Co-Author, Dave Freeman dies at age 47; he only got to complete half of the things on his list. Seems he tripped, fell and hit his head…and died….so tragic and unexpected.
Other Weekend Plans
Friday–son’s football game, hanging out with family, relaxing.
Saturday–working on an audit; attending a cookout.
Sunday–attending church; cookout; reading.
Monday–A DAY OFF FROM WORK, working on audit; reading; chilling and trying not think about going to work the next day.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Share what you’re reading, planning to read, any literary events on the horizon as well as what non-literary plans you have for this weekend.

No matter how you look at it… OFF THE WALL .. is his best.
So Off the Wall…not Thriller.
Off The Wall … before the physical and other weidness took place. He also won a bundle of award for it… I think it’s his best
I didn’t realize it was MJ’s birthday. I forgot he was a Virgo too.
I’m reading Jackie Collins latest book.
My book club meets today and we’ll be discussing Casanegra by Blair Underwood & Steven Barnes/Tanananrive Due.
Shelia’s last blog post..In Barack Obama’s Own Words
Cilla–OFF THE WALL was his debut album but it was Thriller that REALLY took him over the top…Billy Jean, moonwalk, sales over $100million dollars…and he also said it was the happiest time during his life. CLICK on the link to hear his interview:

I know Thriller was the bigger .. but OFF THE WALL is still tops with me. Besides he still looked human back then.
Cilla…I’m just saying…hehe.
xoxo
Off the Wall and Thriller…Hell I just love Michael Jackson!
But don’t ask me to spend a day with him again…like I had to cover his visit to our hometown back in 2003 – his first in over 25 years!
I was worn out being part of the team coverage, lol! He was very nice but I told him I was going home and going to bed…it was only 8 p.m. and I was with him and the entourage since 7:30 a.m. It took me two days to recover from that…madness, absolute madness!
LISA–I don’t know anyone from Gary who doesn’t love Michael…hehe.
trust me girl…it’s some folks here who can’t stand him – they want to blame him fo rnot giving back to Gary…Michael was a kid when he left, sheesh! they some want to hate Janet! I tell them janet’s a year older than me…she was two when the family left Gary…how the hell she gonna remember G.I.???!!!
Lisa–rotfmao…sis you know how your peeps be…lol.
Ben was my favorite of the MJ collections. I loved how that song made me feel, even though I was not thinking of a freaking RAT when I sang it I loved it.
Currently I’m reading Lookin for a Lover by Zaria – can we say TYPOS….ARGH. Why please why! Afterwards I have a few review books to read and then its Missy’s choice!
