Breaking Dawn
Stephenie Meyer
Little, Brown/Tingley
$22.99 (768p)
ISBN 978-0-316-06792-8
All APOOO can say is WOW! Breaking Dawn, the new release, from author Stephanie Meyer, sold over 1MM books in ONE DAY. (SOURCE) Hmmm…how many African-American authors do we have who can say they have sold 1MM books–period? Oh and I can’t lie…I didn’t hear about this author until earlier this year, even tho’ Meyer’s been around for a moment (appears since 2007; she’s come a long way in such a short time). She also has new books coming out through 2009.
UPDATE: I just checked amazon.com for details regarding this book and it appears that even tho’ it’s the number 1 best-selling book for the site…hmmm it’s just an average read. Meyer’s has almost as many 1 star ratings as she does 5 star ratings. Oh and what’s up with amazon.com allowing SPOILERS…get the eff out of here. I can’t believe how hard a time they give APOOO reviewers for posting reviews with backstory that appears on the DAYUM BACK COVER. But there is a reviewfor Breaking Dawn…the FIRST DAYUM REVIEW…which tells the readers SPOILERS included! SMCH.

DISCUSSION QUESTION
What do think were the critical factors to her books record-breaking success?
Do you feel compelled to read the Twilight Saga series to see what all the hype is about? Why or Why Not?

I started this series a year or so ago when I was having Harry Potter withdrawal. I swallowed the first three books. I never would have thought that I’d enjoy a series about vampires and werewolves, but I did, and I found myself drawn to the characters. I think a big part of the series success is the YA audience that has embraced it (just as they did with Harry Potter). They find characters they like and run with them…and now the movie is ready to hit theaters soon.Another thing is that the book covers typcial teen issues: being an awkward teen in a new school, falling in love for the first time, being in the middle of friend/boysfriends who don’t get along, etc. I don’t think as many adults have been drawn to it, although the book can easily crossover to adults.
Thanks Michelle…so I wonder if a lot of the negative reviews at amazon.com are coming from adults…and since it’s a YA series I need to check and see why my daughter and son (who loves Harry Potter) haven’t mentioned it. Then again Paul (age 16) is now reading and discussing Time mag articles with me and Rick. It’s a beautiful thang.

You know, that is interesting because I don’t see the same reading phenomenons with AA YA readers. So much of it is word of mouth too. I read a book review of Twilight which is how I came to read it. NoveList is also a great resource for finding read-alikes, but I don’t believe many AA YA (or adult) readers use that resource even though it’s available for free via your public library. It could also be that AA YA readers will pick it up after it hits the movies and has a strong tv/film presence.
And it’s great your son is reading Time…I can barely keep up with the weekly pub….too many issues, too little time!
Hey Yasmin,
I LOVE the Twilight Series. The first book was actually a giveaway at a conference, and I started reading it for lack of anything else to read. And I LOVED it. I love Edward(Vampire) and Bella (Mortal), their love story is sooo sweet. I’ve only read the first two books, I haven’t read three or four yet, but I will.

It’s a love story, between this very handsome vampire and a not so attractive teenage girl. It’s just so sweet.

I am going to read books three and four when I get a chance. I enjoy reading different genres and different authors, so I’m glad that I found this gem.
I wish Stephanie Meyers all the best, she’s an awesome writer. She’s also written The Host an adult paranormal that is doing very well.
I’m not a huge fan of YA, so I would probably not read it – besides, them books are too damn big. LOL
And considering when the books came out and how hot YA and vamps and paranormal things are, it’s not that surprising that her books kinda exploded like they did.

I think part of the negativity from the reviews are coming from the fact that readers think she wrapped the series up too NEATLY in this last book, making everything too perfect. There were probably other areas she could have continued the series with and after following those characters, they didn’t want it to end.

Desiree–Stephanie Meyers needs to hire you!
Shon–So you don’t want to read a BAB (Big arze Book) lol…and yes vamps and paranormal are hot now…LA Banks is even writing a YA series.
LOL – back in the day when I had oodles of time to read, BABs didn’t bother me too much. I’m older, my eyes are older, and quite honestly, do you really need more than 95,000 words to tell a story? Or, God forbid, 100,000+?
