Billion Dollar Winner by AP Jones

A. P. Jones has written a very funny novel that will also make you go hmmm at the same time. Valencia Banks Freeman is the co-owner of Blackside Press, an independent newspaper that prides itself on getting all of the facts and stating the views of African Americans in Westside of Chicago. When the Chicago Legislature proposed to be included in the new Lotto-50, a billion dollar lottery, Val headed to the State Capital to protest. Billion Dollar Winner is the story of how one single ticket can change the lives of many.

Jones’ story was very entertaining. She gave a very candid and detailed description of how lottery games are created and the greed that comes along with it. Val had to answer to family, friends, legislature, and the community. Everyone wanted a piece of the millions. But how will Val spend the money she protested the loudest about? There were times when I laughed at out loud and there were other times that made me say “Aha.” This is a great story for any book club or lottery fan.

  1. Thank you so much for the very positive review. Here is the Chicago area, I am also getting excellent reviews about the book as it slowly makes it way on to the radar of the reading public.

As one of the reviewers on my blog said, don’t judge the book by the name. The Lottery storyline is just one piece of the most positive, entertaining and especially feel good book that has come along in a long time.

This book is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and in an era where older readers sometimes lament that they can’t find anything to read, I have had an 82 year old read the book in one sitting! So rather than give Granny or Grandpa another trinket for the holidays that they can’t use, consider giving them this book and watch how they glow as they recall so many different facets of the past and present.

If the Covenant for Black America was the blueprint, this book gives insight into the hows and whys.i
