BLACK WOMEN WHO READ BOOK CLUB
Name FIVE genres that your book club reads regularly.
Christian fiction, romance, contemporary fiction, nonfiction/biographies, and a little mystery.
Name FIVE authors whose books your book club enjoys reading together.
Bernice McFadden
Gloria Mallette
Carl Weber
Mary Monroe
Eric Jerome Dickey
List the FOUR BEST books that your book club has read this year.
Sacred Sons by Linda Hudson-Smith
The Measure of a Man by Sidney Poitier
The Sisterhood of Blackberry Corner by Andrea Smith
Color of Water by James McBride
List THREE books—the last book your club read, the current book your club is reading, the book your club plans to read next.
August book “Cane River” by Lalita Tademy
September book “My Women His Wife” by Anna J.
October book “The Red Tent” by Anita Diamant
Offer TWO tips for a successful book club meeting or TWO things to consider before starting a book club.
There must be a commitment to reading the books and a respect for each other’s opinion even if you disagree.
If your group could have dinner with ONE author, who would be your group’s choice and why?
That’s tough to decide…Carl Weber or Gloria Mallette.
GOTTA RUN…BUT BEFORE WE DEPART:
What makes your book club unique and different from any other book club? We have been meeting for 14 years and have only lost one member. We are an unique group of women who have a common love for reading. We are not just a book club but are good friends and family members who have a strong bond.
Is your group currently accepting membership?
We are not currently accepting new members.
How can one reach your group on the Web?
Our book club does not have a website yet…but the founder can be contacted at www.myspace.com/aabooklover or via the book club’s email address bwwrbookclub@comcast.net
APOOO thanks Black Women Who Read for stopping by and chatting with us regarding their book club. They have been around since 1994; I believe this is the most established group APOOO has featured this month. CONGRATS on longevity ladies and may you have at least 14 more years of bonding via books.

Fourteen years?!?! Wow, ladies. Congrats and continued success.
What a wonderful group of women! I am so jealous of having so many women who meet and discuss reading and that you’ve been together for so long. I hope I can ask them a question – You mention that you read The Color of Water by James McBride this year. I read that book for graduate school and I still think about it today (almost 8 years later). I thought the memoir was honest and the most beautiful thing a man could do for his mother. What specifically did you discuss about this book? I would really be interested. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences!

WOW – I thought MY club was doing good with 3 years! I read Cane River a few months ago and loved it. It’s one of my favorite books from this past year. I’m interested to see what you think of The Red Tent – I enjoyed it, but it caused LOTS of debate when I discussed it with a few other women.

Heather J…what debates did the Red Tent cause?
You ladies look beautiful! Congratulations on fourteen years!
Congrats to being together for 14 years!!!
Beautiful photo of the group.
I think that The Red Tent has been one of my most memorable read. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.
Thanks for all the comments. I failed to mention the fact that we have men attending our meeting several times during the year to give a male’s point of view to our discussions. They would kill me if I didn’t mention them. (LOL)
@ Literate Housewife – We discussed the stuggles Ruth and her family overcame in dealing with race and religion issues. And how inspite of those obstacles her children had successful careers. We all loved it and had a very enlightened discussion.
@ Heather J – We’re reading “The Red Tent” next…I’m curious what debates did your bookclub have while discussing “The Red Tent”? Our bookclub loved reading Cane River also.
@ Yasmin – I appreciate this opportunity you have given bookclub’s this month. It’s nice to see what other bookclub’s are doing and reading.
WOW… only lost one member in 14 years. That’s amazing. Congratulations on the APOOO feature. Much success!!

I am so proud to be a member of BWWR (Black Women Who Read). I am one of the “early” members. We’re just like many women dealing with the issues of life but we use the insights of literature to help us grow. We get strength from each others views and opinions. We definitely don’t always agree, but we do learn from each other. It’s been great being with the group for the entire 14 years. I wouldn’t have it done any other way nor with any other group of women. I look forward to many more years of laughing, sharing, crying, disagreeing and partying!
And to our “faithful” fellahs, you know I got your backs. Your presence, views and opinions are invaluable.
Hello Ladies,
You all are really going strong, keep up the good work and make it do what it do…..
