Blog Action Day 2008 Poverty from Blog Action Day on Vimeo.
Okay when I heard about this event some two months ago, I was all gung ho and ready to promote it, support it, blog about it. What a difference two months make. Now I’m indifferent. Not about poverty but about the event. I don’t know whether my malaise is due to the weather (SADD), the economy (HELL YEAH…if we keep going to hell in a hand basket a lot of middle income folks are going to be counted within the working po’), personal situation (who isn’t concerned about their personal finances today) or the fact that too many folks, especially folks of color live below the poverty line right here in the USA. Or…is it a bigger issue…what da heck is talking/blogging about poverty going to do?!?! Nike says JUST DO IT…well when it comes to poverty it’s going to take a lot more to eradicate it than just WORDS…can we say a little money…strike…A LOT OF MONEY.
Growing up I heard…Too whom much is given…much is expected. I also heard…The poor will always be with us. As one person, I don’t even wonder how much of a difference I can make to eradicate poverty. But, collectively, by putting our money (even a small donation…CLICK HERE when you donate a minimum of $10, CopyBlogger will donate $25) where our mouth is…maybe we can make a difference…TOGETHER. And, there’s another saying…PAY IT FORWARD. Hopefully, by being a blessing to someone else today, it will not only enrich their life but help to uplift mine by focusing on someone…JUST FOR A MOMENT…other than me or mine.
NOTE: You don’t have to look far or abroad to see poverty…for some of us…it’s right in our own families…churches…or neighborhood. I stopped giving to United Way years ago because I was concerned about where (and how) my money was being spent. But, over the years, I’ve found other pet projects/charities to more than make up for the difference. One initiative that I remain devoted to is Meals on Wheels (used it when my elderly aunt lived with us and I wanted to make sure that she had a decent lunch…that didn’t require her to cook…while I was at work everyday)…so many elderly rely on this service…and this service relies on donations…maybe you can donate your time, talent or tithes to this organization. Once again…it is just one of many ways that you can make a difference in your LOCAL COMMUNITY…because charity begins at home and spreads abroad.

for my part, i turn to sites like freerice (rice donation), kiva (microfinance), and goodsearch (donation per search), as ways to help alleviate poverty online. i also put up their banners on my blog.
