Susan Wingate explores the strange and complex relationship between a widow, Georgette, and her husband’s ex-wife, Vanessa, in Bobby’s Diner. After thirty-five years of marriage, Vanessa’s life is turned upside-down when Bobby decides to leave her and her daughter, Roberta, to start a new life with Georgette. Although Georgette loves Bobby dearly, she is forced to learn how to deal with the stigma associated with being the ‘other woman.’ Neighbors shun her and the hatred emanating from Vanessa and Roberta is almost overwhelming at times. When Bobby dies suddenly, the two women are shocked to learn that they are co-owners and partners of Bobby’s diner. As Georgette learns to live without Bobby, she slowly realizes that her life is not the fairytale she thought it was. Vanessa and Georgette must maneuver through their painful pasts in order to create a new future.
Readers will recognize their mother, sister or girlfriend in Wingate’s characters. For every flaw there is an endearing quality that draws you into each woman’s story. Bobby’s Diner offers several storylines that force each character to face her fears, find forgiveness, and redefine her life. Bobby’s Diner makes a nice gift for a gal pal and is sure to provide great fodder for book discussion groups.
