Sadie E. Hamer’s debut novel, Born, Broken, Blessed, is the story of Madison Washington. Madison was born prematurely to Felicia and Dallas Washington in Goshen, Virginia. Her mother was a hardworking woman who worked several jobs to care for her family. Her father was an alcoholic and womanizer. From the moment she was born, Madison’s life was full of drama and bad decisions. She went from one promiscuous affair to another and two quick marriages to men that abandoned her. It was not until she was completely broken that she realized that there was only one person who was by her side every step of the way if she only asked.
Hamer’s story, which is told in first person, is a wonderful outline for what could be an excellent story. Written in only 113 pages, the reader moves quickly through Madison’s life. It was not until tragedy struck that she began to seek God first and find romance that was meant for her. The story would have been more appealing if it were more descriptive. There were a lot of grammatical errors, which was very distracting. With a little help, I believe this story would be a wonderful Christian-fiction book that could be enjoyed by many.
