Brain Surgeon: A Doctor’s Inspiring Encounters with Mortality and Miracles by Keith Black is a very compelling and engaging story. Dr. Black specializes in surgery and medical treatments for disorders of the brain at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California. Growing up in Alabama, Dr. Black explained that he was always curious about medicine and science. His parents, who were educators, saw opportunity in learning and encouraged him to learn everything he could.
At first glance, I expected not to like this book because I assumed that it would be full of medical jargon that would require more explanation. I was wrong. Every aspect of the brain, its function, and various diseases that attack the brain were explained in laymen terms. Dr. Black explained the diseases, the surgical procedures, the preparations, the emotions, the treatments, the drugs and the successful results. He spent just as much time discussing the courage and strength of his patients that he has operated on. He expressed how he envied their strength which encouraged him to seek funding for research for cures and assistance for those who are financially unable to afford the expense of some of the procedures.
This was a wonderful book to read and I would recommend it to high school and college students who are seeking a career in medicine.
