In recent times, I’m enthralled by the work of Synthia St. James and particularly some of her latest pieces, such as, “Circle of Promise,” healing art meant to encourage hope, promise, healing, and love-rewriting the story of African Americans and breast cancer.
When I was nineteen years old, I met my soulmate. Of course I didn’t realize it then and it took me many years, other relationships, marriage and children to realize that what I had been running from was a power greater than me–my one true love.
If you’ve notices, thus far we haven’t featured any men during the All About Love Blog Tour. Well, it’s Valentine’s Day and that’s getting ready to change today. Love month is the perfect time to count the many ways that there are to love someone, someplace, and something. Love is in the air. It’s a state of mind, a state of being, and, for some of us, a state of confusion. To prove my point, I caught up with a character from my latest book, “Where There’s Smoke,” and asked her about her past experiences with love.

Isn’t it horrifying that 42% of African American women have never been married? Almost half of our sisters will never meet their soul mate, get married, have beautiful brown babies and perpetuate our race. The more successful a black woman is the less likely she is to ever get married or have children.
Love is all that; it lifts us up, tears us down, breaks us, makes us, heals us, inspires us… makes us call on our maker-tears of joy, pain, lust, rage, love is deeeep. Love is profound. Love is the alpha and the omega of human drama.
I never thought I could love another child as much as I love my own child. I admit I enjoy being able to give her back to her mother when her diaper needs to be changed or she gets a little grumpy, but it goes much deeper than that.
No one could ever say that Brianna isn’t a romantic. I believe in romance. I believe that there’s the perfect man for the perfect woman and when the two meet, all will be well in the world. Although my life is currently a mess, I have not given up hope that I will meet my Nubian prince–and Jake Banks, who I’m currently involved with, is definitely not the one.
