I’m new to the Thursday Thirteen meme. Since I have a Web site about books, particularly African American Lit, I thought I would try and create memes that focus on books. Anyone who knows me…know that I love an author who can tell a good story and take the ordinary and make it memorable. This author had already done that with her non-fiction titles…but I wondered if she could do the same with a fictional novel. Especially since she decided to write an erotic tale…which I thought was out of her realm…and honestly knowing what I know about her…I expected her to give me a literary fiction novel. So, I was pleasantly surprised to see her writing fiction more or less erotic.

But, as with anything she writes, she did the genre well. She gave me some hot, between the sheets, bump and grind sex scenes. But, she also gave me well-developed characters, smooth pacing, twists and turns, a titillating storyline and dayum good writing! Oh and several messages too boot!

APOOO invites you to read the paragraph below and guess who the author is as well as the title of the book.

Lydia Beaucoup and Acey Allen are in their early forties and still “fly”. Lydia’s profession as sr. account executive at a San Francisco PR firm is monotonous on a good day, while ace-boon-coon and proprietress of a small spa in downtown Oakland , Acey grows weary of husband Matthew and their almost non-existent sex life. Fed up with thwarted relationships and unfulfilling professions, a ludicrous tête-à-tête one Sunday afternoon unexpectedly spawns, A Sisters’ Spa; a male brothel for African-American women in Reno, Nevada where “a special set of services are designed to meet the most intimate needs of black women.” When politics, religion, sexism and scandal threaten to cease operation of A Sisters Spa, Lydia and Acey must pull together a plan of action or their hard work will go “limp” not to mention their male companions.

Happy Hump Day from APOOO!
The week is halfway finished and the month is more than halfway over.
As Between the Sheets winds down, I would like to do something a little different to help stimulate conversation and interaction (and I hope my site cooperates and allows everyone to leave comments without eating them first.)

That said…I am going to try my hand at starting a story and then I want all of you to jump in and expand upon the story by leaving a comment. Let’s have some fun and see where we go with this. So here goes and it is okay to drop it like it’s hot as this is an erotic ‘story’ tale brought to you by the APOOO family and friends.

This was the day from hell. A dark cloud found me before daybreak and followed me around for the rest of the day. It all started with a phone call from my mom this morning. Mom informed me that her best friend and identical twin sister, and my favorite aunt and uncle were getting a divorce, after 40 years of marriage, because my aunt had found a younger man. According to mom, my aunt was attracted to a man, 15 years her junior, because my uncle was no longer putting it down in the bedroom. Oooh…yuck…too much information…especially since my aunt and uncle are both ministers. Yep, you heard right, ministers. Guess auntie was doing more on her knees at those supposedly prayer meetings she was attending than praying. LOL.

If that was not enough to start the day off on a drama-filled note, mom shared with me that my middle brother, Thomas, was in jail because my younger sister, Eileen, called him to come over and help her with her wayward husband. My brother-in-law, Michael, is an alcoholic, gambler, liar, cheat and has just always been bad news. I should know because he was my boyfriend before he was my brother-in-law but my sister has never been good at choosing men and often dated my rejects. I am glad that she and I have always been close despite her poor taste in men. But, I digress. It seems that my brother-in-law landed in the emergency room and my brother, the rock of Gibraltar and the family attorney landed in jail, all because he was trying to defend our baby sister. And mom needed me to help bail my brother out. I do not need this drama this week. My boss is on vacation and I’m the managing director, handling her work and mine as well. Sigh.

I know family comes first but sometimes I just wish that my family would leave me out of the drama. After all, they are the reason that I left home, the town, the state and never looked back. I only see them on my terms and I like it that way. But, I knew that before the end of the day, I would have my brother out of jail, and have reservations to fly home for the end of the week to be by my mom’s side as she dealt with the latest family mess. But, not without a peaceful day.

After the early morning call, the rest of the day continued to spiral downhill. I had a day complete with back-to-back meetings, an overflowing in-box, so many voicemails that my mailbox was full, coupled with disgruntled clients, trifling and backstabbing co-workers, an insubordinate employee and an assistant whose baby daddy had to be escorted off the work premises because he was being unruly and disruptive. Oh, and did I mention that Eileen called me every hour on the hour asking me ‘would I allow her kids (eight year-old Bebe and Cece) to come and spend the summer with me while she worked it out with her husband. WTF? Am I related to this girl?

It is now 7pm and I am just getting home. All I want to do is release, relate, relax. I have take out from my favorite Chinese restaurant, which will be chased with a glass of white zinfandel, and after dining I hope to curl up with a good book, One Ain’t Enough by Mo’ Flames, recommended to me by my freaky sorority sister, Joy. She said the book is hot and that I should make sure I have a man nearby or batteries for the bullet as I will need to scratch that itch after reading it. Well, I do not have a man in my life right now, so you figure it out. LOL.

I cannot believe that it is 9pm and I have been reading for the last two hours. Joy was not lying about this book. One Ain’t Enough by Mo’ Flames is hot. Hmmm, I think I am going to get downright comfortable–have another glass of wine, turn down the lights, ignite some candles, run a bubble bath and finish reading in the bathtub. Oh, and make sure the bullet has batteries.

Ring, ring…brrrr ring. I am not expecting any calls. Who might that be.

Apparently, how many baby mommas and baby daddies is a HOT TOPIC for fodder these days as Doug of the Doug Banks Show posed the question to listeners yesterday, ‘How Many Baby Mommas and Baby Daddies are too many?’

In other words, if you are dating someone and they have kids, how many different baby daddies or mommas can they introduce into your relationship? Honestly, I never really thought about this much until today, because as a Black woman I do not think we really have much choice when it comes to finding someone who does not have kids.

In my case, when I met my husband he had one child. I had none which my husband liked because he did not have to deal with any baby daddies. I, on the other hand, had to deal with a baby momma. LOL. My preference would have been none, since I did not have any children of my own. But, given that I was over 30 when I got married, it was dayum near impossible for me to find a man who did not have any kids. My husband said that this worked both ways…he just hit the jackpot with me. Hehe. At any rate, I was fortunate as his baby mama respected me, never caused any drama (with me) and his daugther was almost out of the house (she was 16) when we got together and she did not feel threatened by me.

Okay, fast forward to 18 years later and two children together and the same question. Well, if something happened to my hubby prematurely and I had to enter the dating scene again–how many baby mommas would be too many for me? If they come with drama ALL OF THEM.

A good author is one who can hone his or her craft and make a livelihood from writing. An exceptional author is one who not only hones his or her craft but also writes in more than one genre. He came on the scene over 10 years ago and catered to his target audience by writing sistergurl storylines, and I might add doing it well from a male point-of-view. Since 1996, he has ventured into thriller, urban fiction plots (eg Thieves Paradise) and for the last three books, erotic or is it–as some have suggested–soft porn? You be the judge. Check out the review excerpts from APOOO members below and also share with us what’s your favorite EJD book?

SWS is a book you will want to read in one sitting! Dickey had me with the prologue, but the ruthless characters, tight plotting, vivid imagery, smooth pacing, electrifying tension and conflict kept me reading until the very end. Once I began reading, I quickly became captivated by the storyline and could not turn the pages fast enough. Dickey’s metaphors and similes, as well as foreshadowing, kept my eyes glued to the pages as I anxiously waited to see what would happen next. Dickey does not disappoint with SWS. –Yasmin

Picking up where Sleeping with Strangers left off, Dickey’s latest novel finds hit man Gideon in London, where another assassin, a mysterious man with a broken nose, is hot on his trail. Gideon’s most recent target was a rapper, Big Bad Wolf. The rival rapper who hired Gideon for the hit, Sledge, was recently assassinated, and Gideon assumes he is the latest target. The nonstop narrative follows Gideon as he evades the assassin, searches for the truth about his hooker mother, continues his involvement with tough girl Arizona (who wants Gideon to kill her older sister), tries to figure out who ordered the hit on him and finds time for some explicitly chronicled fantasy sex. Though the revelations about who’s behind what are a stretch and the ending is a little too much on the rosy side, there’s a lot of fun to be had in watching Gideon work his brutal trade, and the high-octane narrative will have readers burning through page after page. Dickey, once again, gives readers a story that will be talked about for years. First, the book was full of erotic, in-your-face sex. The scenes were very well-written and they left nothing to the imagination. Readers are enticed to turn each page just to see just how far Nia is willing to go to explore her sexual fantasies with the twins. Second, Dickey’s style of writing is phenomenal. He has a way of telling a story that is capable of stirring emotions and thoughts. As a reader, you are immediately caught up in the story from the beginning or you are completely lost. In that sense, Dickey has increased the bar for writers to achieve. –Priscilla
