Thanks to everyone who participated in APOOOs HEAD OF THE CLASS feature during the month of September. The participation and conversation was lively and contagious…and it was fun to watch the book clubs get excited and draw others in. Wish APOOO could do a HEAD OF THE CLASS spotlight/feature every month…but hmmm it would probably be difficult to come up with so many prizes! Speaking of prizes…WE HAVE WINNERS.

Due to the generosity of Hatchette Books, we were fortunate to have enough books to award to not one but TWO book clubs! These two book clubs were both deserving as both of them rounded up their troops and got them to come out and support them. And many of their members cheered on and promoted other book clubs as well. I hope to meet both of these groups one day as they both appear to exemplify what book clubs should be about–love of reading, love of fellowship, friendship, warm spirit, compassion and exuding positiveness!

WINNING BOOK CLUBS…

GRAND PRIZE–Positive Minds Book Club, Macon, GA

Books available to book club winners include Sinful Too by Victor McGlothin (HOT OFF THE PRESS) and Things We Do for Love by Xavier McKnight. Grand Prize winner gets first choice of title.

WINNER WHO PARTICIPATED EVERY DAY

This one was a close call…but in the end…Nardsbaby aka Crystal pulled away from the pack and won. She’s the winner of a $30 gift certificate to amazon.com. Congrats Crystal and please email me for more details.

TAKES FIVE WITH APOOO

Location: Kansas City Metro

When Founded: 2002

Number of Members: 25

Name FIVE genres that your book club reads regularly.
We read memoirs, contemporary fiction, sci-fi, chick-lit, romance.

Name FIVE authors whose books your book club enjoys reading together.
We mostly read new authors so I don’t think we’ve repeatedly read any author that everyone enjoyed reading as a group. Our favorite new authors so far have been Ebony Farashuu, T.T. Bridgeman, L.Y. Marlow, Delores Phillips, and Millennia Black.

List the FOUR BEST books that your book club has read this year.
Color Me Butterfly by L.Y. Marlow (this is probably our favorite within all the years of the book club), Pound Cake for Sweet Pea by T.T. Bridgeman, Diary of a Mistress by Miasha, Sweet Georgia Brown by Cheryl Robinson.

List THREE books–the last book your club read, the current book your club is reading, the book your club plans to read next.
Last book: Color Me Butterfly by L.Y. Marlow
Current book: Black Rain by Vincent Alexandria
Next Book: A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown

Offer TWO things to consider before starting a book club.
The two tips that I would offer anyone that would like to start a book club are: Be committed to the entire process of beginning a book club. The more consistent you are, the better organized your book club will be.
Use your local AA event websites to attract diverse readers. It is actually better to have readers that are not relatives or friends involved in the book club in order to keep your book club on task and not end up with a social club instead.

If your group could have dinner with ONE author, who would be your group’s choice and why?
Probably Eric Jerome Dickey just because we’ve probably read more of his books than any other authors. I think we would like to know what does he be thinking of when writing his books. Especially the last three!

GOTTA RUN…BUT BEFORE WE DEPART:
What makes your book club unique and different from any other book club?
Our book club is unique because we’re trying to not only make a difference within our own community but also the literary community world-wide. We try to give new authors a platform by reading their books and also by turning around and exposing them to a broader audience on our radio show. We are moving in new directions all the time to make a difference some way literary-wise.

Is your group currently accepting membership?

Yes we accept new members in January, May, and September
If so, whom should we contact? www.kcgirlfriendsbookclub.com/kcgfrecruitmentpage fill out the application on the page

How can one reach your group on the Web?
www.myspace.com/kcgirlfriendsbookclub

APOOO thanks KC Girlfriends Book Club for stopping by and hanging out with us today. We wish each of them many years of fellow shipping via books.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Yet, we are humble enough to come together and learn from each other’s mistakes, weaknesses, and strengths as well as growth to make this journey of life and book club a successful one.

Is your group currently accepting membership? If so, whom should we contact?

Yes, but we are not advertising open membership. It is a case by case situation as well as a process prior to joining. I (Tasha) can be reached at 404-668-5847 or at journeyofwomen@hotmail.com for further info.

How can one reach your group on the Web? www.myspace.com/journeyofwomen

What makes your book club unique and different from any other book club?
There are several things that make us unique. First, is our selection of books we read. Because we have diverse genres, one reading year to the next is not the same. Second, is our ability to think beyond ourselves, but into the community. Over the last few years, we have been deeply committed to giving back to the community locally and worldwide. Lastly, is in respects to our meetings, our host try to out do each other with their meeting style so that they can be the next winner of the “Lady Award” for the best host.

Is your group currently accepting membership? If so, whom should we contact? Yes we are accepting members. We normally have new members by referral only, but we are opening up 2009.
If interested, ladies should contact us at realladiesread@sbcglobal.net

If your group could have dinner with ONE author, who would be your group’s choice and why?
Oh, we had fun with this question. The consensus was Blair Underwood. Besides the obvious reasons, LOL, we all want to quiz him about the status of his plans for making My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due into a movie. We know he shot some footage in Ethiopia and we have been waiting for years for this movie.

GOTTA RUN…But Before We Depart:
What makes your book club unique and different from any other book club?
We are a book club that grew out of the Marcus Book Stores, a Black-owned book store started by the Richardson family. There are two stores, one in the Fillmore in San Francisco and Oakland. Blanche Richardson, manager of the Oakland store, wanted to discuss My Soul to Keep, the word spread and a book club was born. We are proud to be associated with such a distinguished institution as Marcus Book Stores.

Is your group currently accepting membership? If so, whom should we contact?
Yes. Marcusbookclub65@yahoo.com

How can one reach your group on the Web? Currently we do not have a Web site, but one is in progress. Once it is up and running, we will share the new address.

APOOO is happy to feature Marcus Book Club and a big kool-aid grin goes out to Dera Williams, who is not only a member of Marcus, but she’s also a very ACTIVE member of APOOO as well as an editor and reviewer for APOOO’s review team, AET.

August: A Lover’s Regret and A Lover’s Worth by AlTonya Washington

TWO tips for a successful book club meeting.
1. Begin each meeting with a prayer.
2. End each meeting with a hug and by saying I love you.

If your group could have dinner with ONE author, who would be your group’s choice and why?
Any author with whom we could let go and have fun.

GOTTA RUN…BUT BEFORE WE DEPART:
What makes your book club unique and different from any other book club?
In addition to book discussions, we worship, travel and attend literary events together. We have members whose mothers have been called to glory, but we have the luxury of sharing the mothers of our other members. Each of us has a special gift which we share with each other.

Is your group currently accepting membership? No

How can one reach your group on the Web? We do not have a web site. However, we do review books and author’s who are interested in having their books read/reviewed, can reach us at: Bonita at tds dot net; place Review Requested in the subject line.

APOOO welcomes the members of Prominent Women of Color Book Club and we thank them for taking time out of their busy schedules to chat with us and special thanks to Toni Bonita for coordinating interview.

We are not currently accepting new members.
How can one reach your group on the Web?
Our book club does not have a website yet…but the founder can be contacted at www.myspace.com/aabooklover or via the book club’s email address bwwrbookclub@comcast.net

APOOO thanks Black Women Who Read for stopping by and chatting with us regarding their book club. They have been around since 1994; I believe this is the most established group APOOO has featured this month. CONGRATS on longevity ladies and may you have at least 14 more years of bonding via books.

As Vice-President of Sugar and Spice Book Club I recommend two very important tips! #1 Make everyone in your club feel important! Give each individual a chance to be heard! Allow people to actively participate in the club by leading activities or events. Holding an office, treasurer, fund raiser, web designer, literary book reviewer, etc.
Encourage members to bring new fresh ideas to the table.
#2 Invite new authors as well as famous ones! Show your appreciation for their taking time from their day to visit your club by providing some nice refreshments and food and a nice gift! Keep in contact with these authors and invite them to social events, such as the club’s Christmas party or the annual barbecue!

If your group could have dinner with ONE author, who would be your group’s choice and why? If we could have dinner with an author I think it would have to be Carl Weber!!!!!! We just holler when he talks to us at a book club session. He is so nice and very down to earth. We just love Carl!!!!!!!!!!

GOTTA RUN…BUT BEFORE WE DEPART:

What makes your book club unique and different from any other book club? Our book club is unique in that we do so many different things! Fund raising trips to Atlantic City and Baltimore for Crab FESTS, PROVIDE BOOK BAGS FOR BATTERED WIVES CHILDREN, VISIT members that moved out of state, enter contests, hold a conference for young girls, raise money for more research to end breast cancer, etc. Open House for new members is held the last Saturday in June!

Is your group currently accepting membership? If so, whom should we contact?
