My most memorable childhood Christmas experience was in December 1963 when my parents became homeowners for the first time. I was in the sixth grade, and I remember going from room to room, smelling the fresh paint and remembering different stages as the house was being built.

I had the great opportunity to fulfill a life-long dream of being in New York City during Christmas season. I’ve had the chance to see the lighting of the trees with friends on the Upper East side and sing Christmas carols with hundreds of other people all bonded by what Christmas means to them.

The best thing about Christmas to me is watching my young nieces and nephews as they tear open the wrapping on present to see what’s on the inside, and watching them ooh and aah when they receive a gift they really wanted.

I remember being so excited to get a board game of my own, since my siblings were between 5 and 10 years older than me and I couldn’t play Monopoly with them. But I didn’t have to know how to read to play my Candy land game, and my siblings were always willing to play with me.

My most memorable childhood Christmas experience was in 1970, it was the last year my grandmother was alive, I didn’t know why at the time but it was so special and I felt close to her in a way I can’t explain. She had twenty six grandchildren but she made us all feel we were favorites. Eight months later, she was gone.
