Welcome to APOOO, Jeannie!

In 140 words or less, tell us a little about yourself.

I am the author of “Color Me Black”, my first published novel. My second book, “Jeannie Eneh’s Steamy Adult Bed-Tales,” will be released summer 2012. I’m currently working on my third book. I’m really blessed to have a creative imagination. Having graduated from Booker T. Washington School of the Performing Arts in Dallas I credit their Theatre Arts Program, in which I studied there, for exposing me to various forms of being a writer. I was school mates with Eryka Badu and Roy Hargrove.

In 140 words or less, tell us why Color Me Black would make a great addition to our personal library.

Color Me Black is a spicy novel filled with energy and exciting twists. It’s a novel you can read two or three times and still enjoy it. After reading Color Me Black you’re asking your girl-friends have they read it.

How did you come up with the premise for Color Me Black?

Wow! I wanted to write something that was different. I wanted to flip the script in which a nice looking white guy finds the black female delectable.

What are some of the main themes portrayed in Color Me Black?

One of the main themes that I personally like is when Autumn and Bug are filming the music video. Everyone is enjoying the ambience of the scenery but something bad is lurking in the very near future.

What makes Color Me Black different from other books in the marketplace?

Color Me Black is very different from other novels. For example one of the main characters has a secret in his closet that could possibly break his thriving music career.

What genre is Color Me Black and who’s the target audience?

The genre is hip-hop, urban black romance fiction. The target audience are book lovers of young adult and old, female & male. I love it when a man is reading! Yea!

What’s the best advice that someone has given you about the publishing industry?

The best advice I’ve received was to not take NO for an answer. NO is not in my vocabulary.

What’s the most favorable review you’ve received to date regarding Color Me Black?

“Will there be a Color Me Black II?”

What can readers expect from you in the future?

Readers can expect from me in the future more exciting books and ultimately I’d like to write a screen play for the big screen in Bollywood! In fact I’m brainstorming a few ideas just for that!

Is there anything else you would like to share with APOOO readers?

Pray fully, one day I’d like to work with John Singleton. I love all his work, he is very talented and unique to say the least. Call me John!

Jeannie, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to hang out with APOOO and we wish you many blessings with your literary endeavors.

In 140 words or less, tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a wife, mother, entrepreneur and the author of the novels Misleading, Tour Secrets and Tour Secrets 2. I find writing to be exciting and very therapeutic. I write because it’s my passion and I want to entertain readers with words. Being a Pisces brings out the passionate and sensitive side of me. I’m a very creative person and my mind is always working 24 hours a day. I relax by skating. We call it JB skating in Chicago. Oh, we get down on the skates. LOL There are many different sides to me and I like to bake, laugh and have fun, but the things people know about me is that I’m very humble, helpful and love supporting and motivating people. Doing what I enjoy is priceless. I live to dream and dream to live.

In 140 words or less, tell us why Misleading would make a great addition to our personal library. Misleading is an intoxicating story that keeps the readers interested and would make a great addition to your personal library because it deals with real life issues that are relatable. Revenge, deceit, greed and karma are the ingredients for “Misleading” storyline. The cover will grab your attention, and then the video book trailer will take you over the edge. Never judge a person by their outer exterior, and be careful of the people you keep around you, are the motto for the book.

How did you come up with the premise for Misleading?

I have met some devious, dirty people and some were undetected. People that smile in your face and stab you in the back; gave me the idea to write Misleading. Hearing so many people having the same issues, I couldn’t resist the urge to write this story and give some insight on the background of these types of people and why they do the things they do. There’s a reason for everything.

What are some of the main themes portrayed in Misleading?

Some of the main themes are retribution, gluttony and karma. What goes around always comes back around. Not being aware of the people surrounding you can sometimes put you in a bad situation. Just because the package is beautiful on the outside, doesn’t mean it’s beautiful on the inside, which some of the characters in Misleading prove.

What makes Misleading different from other books in the marketplace?

I love to write realistic stories with tons of twists and turns, and give readers a shock. I feel my books will always produce these elements, therefore making Misleading and my other novels unique. Misleading proves that the people who are the closes to you are the usually the ones you can’t trust which keeps the story engaging.

What genre is Misleading and who’s the target audience?

The genre is fiction and is for an adult audience looking for juicy storylines with lots of drama. I always create characters that readers love or hate, which makes great book club discussions.

What’s the best advice that someone has given you about the publishing industry?

Writing the story is the easy part, promoting and marketing your book is where the hard work begins. Get ready to work!

What other books have you published and which book has been most favorably received by readers?

I’ve just re-released Tour Secrets and Tour Secrets 2 through my company Ailam Publishing. Since Tour Secrets is a series, both books have received great reviews. The Tour Secrets series is about two girls trying to make it in the music industry as dancers. They give you a chance to see through dancers eyes on what really happens while traveling the road with celebrities. Tour Secrets is not a tell-all but gives the readers an accurate behind the scenes look inside the music industry. The readers loved all the twists and turns and the juicy secrets. One of the main characters reveals that “she” is really a “he” and disguises himself as a female dancer in the music industry. This huge secret is revealed in the very beginning of the book and sets the pace for more secrets to be exposed.

What can readers expect from you in the future?

I will continue writing novels and producing the video book trailers for them. I definitely look forward to turning my novels into movies. I have tons of things going on, so I would like the readers to stay connected with me at www.winkkatme.com.

Is there anything else you would like to share with APOOO readers?

I want to say thank you to APOOO and Yasmin for giving authors the platform to discuss and show their work. I would also like to thank the readers for supporting me and to continue to follow me at www.winkkatme.com, twitter.com/winkkatme, facebook.com/winkkatme2 and youtube.com/winkktv. Always continue to support, motivate and inspire others.

Winkk, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to hang out with APOOO and we wish you many blessings with your literary endeavors.

1) In 140 words or less, tell us a little about yourself.

I have had seven novels, one novella, and one nonfiction book published. My first novel, Sisters and Lovers, sold more than 100,000 hardcover copies and about 500,000 copies in paperback. I still pinch myself about that.

My work has appeared on the bestseller lists of the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly. A Long Way From Home, the story of my ancestors, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.

My nonfiction title Jewels, a photo-essay book featuring luminaries such as actress Ruby Dee and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, was coauthored with photographer Michael Cunningham. The collection of novellas was coauthored with Lolita Files and Anita Bunkley. Both of these were welcome changes from what I usually write.

2) In 140 words or less, tell us why Money Can’t Buy Love would make a great addition to our personal library.

Well, the book jacket is stunning! I love the woman’s pose, the lighting, the jewelry. It’s sexy and sophisticated. It’s like a work of art.

The novel is also a great story and very fitting for the difficult economic times we’re living in. Many readers will be able to relate to the main character Lenora Stone and her money and man troubles and also her poor way of managing them both when she lucks out and wins a lot of money and meets the man of her dreams. We’ve all been there. We’ve all messed things up in our lives. We’ve squandered money. We’ve acted stupid with some guy. What’s important is whether we learn from our mistakes.

3) How did you come up with the storyline for Money Can’t Buy Love?

I asked myself what an insecure woman might do if she suddenly won millions of dollars and met the man of her dreams. Would she smarten up and gain more confidence? Or would she blow it all?

4) What makes Money Can’t Buy Love different from other books in the marketplace?

Lenora Stone isn’t perfect, especially physically. She struggles with her weight. She’s not beautiful in the traditional sense. She’s lacking in poise and confidence. In short, she’s like many of us. Authors tend to create perfect or near-perfect main characters. The gorgeous heroine. The hunk of a hero. I’m guilty of it myself. This time I decided to try something different and make my main character obviously flawed.

5) You’ve been in the literary arena for a few years now (dare I say longer than a decade), what have been the keys to your success?

Hopefully without sounding too full-headed, I think I’m a darn good storyteller. But there are lots of darn good story tellers out there who haven’t been as fortunate as I have in landing book contracts, so it’s more than that. I think getting established and building a good reputation before the publishing industry changed helps. I have a loyal following for which I’m truly grateful. I also have a fantastic agent. I’ve been with her since the very beginning, and she’s smart, creative, tough. She knows how to get things done.

6) What advice do you recommend to young writers who are trying to break into the writing scene?

It’s tough now, much tougher than it was when I started more than 15 years ago because the market has changed so much. Still, it is possible. You have to really want it. You have to make it a top priority in your life, to the point of putting almost everything else aside, at least until that first sale or you achieve some measure of success. I have a blog, Writer Revealed, that’s full of advice for aspiring authors. The articles are written by myself and other established authors. I haven’t been posting as much recently due to other things taking up my time but I plan to get back to it soon. You can find it at www.writerrevealed.com.

In 140 words or less, tell us a little about yourself.

I’ve been a romantic fiction writer for about 8 years. My first title was released with the BET Books Arabesque imprint “Remember Love”. Lately I’ve ventured into the realm of self publishing starting with the release of the 4th title in my Ramsey series- “A Lover’s Regret”. I reside in NC and I’m currently in Graduate School for my Masters in Library Science. I work as a Academic Library Serials Assistant.

In 140 words or less, tell us why your book would make a great addition to our personal library.

A Lover’s Shame is the 11th book in the Ramsey Series but it’s the first book in the Ramsey/Tesano series which marks the second portion of this saga. What I love about this title is that while it’s the 11th title in the series, the characters and storyline are so powerful the book can be read as a stand-alone. Also, this marks the first time I’ve written a heroine who has concerns about her weight. It’s been very refreshing crafting the relationship between Sabella and Isak-who adores her just as she is and makes no secret in telling her that.

Why did you decide to write A Lover’s Shame–how did you come up with the theme/subject matter?

Well since it’s part of the Ramsey series, it was the natural progression of things as far as the plot goes. But as far as the hero & heroine- there was subject matter that dealt with rage- on the part of the hero over the loss of the woman he loved. I found it intriguing to write about how that actually changed him from mild-mannered to quick tempered and anger-filled. On the part of the heroine, she discovers a horrifying secret that makes her ashamed of who she is. For a woman who spent the better part of her life battling issues regarding her weight, this was a blow that hit her very hard.

What message do you want readers to take from A Lover’s Shame?

That there are many twists and turns in relationships- and that the negative aspects don’t always involve the couple, but those on the fringes (family, work, etc). Many times the love still remains between the couple, but much pain and sacrifice may be required before they are back on track.

What do you think makes A Lover’s Shame different from other books on the same topic in the marketplace?

Well for one thing, I didn’t really follow any format for writing a series when I started this. I had never actually read a connecting storyline before beginning my own, so I sort of crafted the Ramseys in my own style and many readers have thanked me for that. There really isn’t a formula, I pretty much craft these stories the way the characters lead me-and they have led me into some outrageous places!

So many independent bookstores have gone out-of-business and now we hear that Borders is experiencing financial difficulties. What impact do you believe this will have on your books?

I believe that readers are very tenacious and I LOVE that about them. If they want your book they will find it whatever the issue. Besides that; although I am a print book person, many of my readers are deep into the e-book realm and so that is growing into a very strong market.

Name three things that an author must do in order to stay competitive.

1. Keep producing. 2. Be open to writing across genres (ex. Contemporary romance, erotica, historical, suspense, etc.) and 3. Continuously hone your craft.

Share with us your next project.

There are several projects in the works for me right now. About to release is my next e-book title: “Dancing With Destiny”. I’m completing the proofing for my August Kimani release Private Melody. I’m typing up the final draft for my Jan. ’12 Kimani release “Pleasure After Hours” and I’m working on my next T. Onyx erotica “Pleasure’s Powerhouse”. After that I’ll begin my next Ramsey title: “A Lover’s Hate”.

Hello Rachel and welcome to APOOO.

In 140 words or less, tell us a little about yourself?

I love to write. I love words and their power. Writing is part of my human stitching. It’s my goal to both entertain and enlighten my audience through this medium. I am also blessed to be a wife, mother of 4, grandmother of 3, BFF, community leader, radio host, poet, businesswoman, mentor, public speaker, and so much more—you know the many hats we women wear! I’m also striving to live my best life, and be the best I can be and help others do the same. I love honest and genuine people. I treasure and love my family and true friends. But I’m still a child at heart. There’s times when I’m just silly and playful. I love to have fun. To me, life is good despite its challenges!

In 140 words or less, tell us why your book would make a great addition to our personal library.

I wrote this book from my heart, especially for our young men, and to reach out to youth in general. As a mother of two grown men, I am aware of the natural occurrences young men go through. Young men today are in significant need of mentoring; their minds need to be massaged by more than just sports and comics. Our young men need to read, and read about people, places, and situations they can relate to and learn from. I included workbook questions at the end of the book to get their thoughts about the story and to stimulate their thoughts about some things going on in their own life. It is my hope that this series will also be one parents will read with their tweens and teens because it also covers some family and parent issues.

Why did you decide to write A Slip in the Right Direction–how did you come up with the theme/subject matter?

This book actually started out as a writing exercise. I attended a writers’ event many years ago and was given an on-the-spot exercise to do. Since I had sons, I decided to write something I could read to them later that they might enjoy. Once I got back at home, I kept thinking about it, because I really enjoyed the writers’ event. I reread my entry, and then turned it into a short story, and later on as I kept reading it, I embellished it until it became a book.

What message do you want young readers to take from A Slip in the Right Direction?

There’s actually a few messages I’d like to convey. I want our youth to know that it’s okay to grow up with morals, family training, and values and not feel corny, strange, alone, or scared to be the best person you’re meant to be. I want young boys to read about and know that the things that are going on in their minds and body are natural and understand how they can be dealt with in a positive way. This is also a story that shows we parents aren’t perfect and that we can grow too. This story shows that we can teach our children, but they’re not going to always be with us and they will challenge what we’ve taught them, but most of the time, they listen and eventually see what we’ve said is for their best. And I really want the readers to learn the importance of going through challenges, learning from them, and then passing on to others what you’ve learned, as well as giving back to the community.

What do you think makes A Slip in the Right Direction different from other books on the same topic in the marketplace?

Well, Slip’s a really cool kid and smart for his age. We actually see him grow from naive to a more mature young man. Furthermore, I’ve given Slip aka Clifton Henderson the gift of premonition; this adds a bit of excitement and enchantment to the series. I’ve also included some mystery people who either aid him to become more mature or challenge his curiosity and later, detective skills. These elements also provide a bit of suspense to the story line. Tweens and teens like that. So, they’re learning lessons and being entertained at the same time.

Have you written any other books? If so, give us a brief description (no more than 140 words) for each of them and tell us how we can purchase them.

Yes, I’ve written a mainstream fiction novel entitled Family Pictures that I released in 2009. This is a saga about a multigenerational family, told by three characters. This story reveals some of their family secrets, life lessons, and personal revelations. I feel it’s a read that mirrors a lot of the things that make and shake many real-life families. I’ve gotten good reviews about it, and I think it’s a good story. I plan to have it reedited and then rereleased no later than next year. Also, I wrote and released in 2005 a chapbook of poetry entitled, From The Heart And Heat Of Me. This read is an interactive book of poems and a short story about life and love. Family Pictures is off the market at present, but my poetry book can be purchased from my Web site.

So many independent bookstores have gone out-of-business and now we hear that Borders is experiencing financial difficulties. What impact do you believe this will have on your books?

It’s sad to see and hear about our brick-and-mortar allies going out of existence. But like anything else, you have to use the tools available when others fail. My motto is that even with the stores that still exist, an author has got to be out there pounding the pavement, networking, using social and other online mediums, book clubs, home parties, book signings, author events, selling from the trunk of your car, one-on-one selling, and not to forget the word-of-mouth advertising—whatever it takes to get the job done.

I noticed your book is self-published–.what are some lessons you learned or experienced during the process?

Self-publishing is exactly how it sounds—self. You’re it. You do everything. Now that’s not a bad thing. You just have to be willing and ready. You have to do your homework and be open to learn all there is to learn about the journey of getting your work in front of others. Writing is the easy part. There’s so much more involved. You don’t just write a book and sit back, even if you’re traditionally published. Last year, I established my own publishing company so that I could sell my books cheaper than I could using the previous medium I had for publishing. I also met a lot of people that were positive aids in furthering my career. Networking and watching seasoned writers is like a dose of vitamins for a healthy career. Also, I learned that to be successful, you have to see your writing as a business and not a hobby—unless you just want it to be a hobby.

Name three things that an author must do in order to stay competitive.

Continually study, work on your craft, and write as often as you can. Read other authors, especially those in your genre, to stay up on the trends and literary changes. Study your targeted audience by getting in wherever they hang out, be it online or in person, and find out what they want and need in a good read.

Share with us your next project?

Well, I’m working on the next installment of The Clifton Henderson series book 2 entitled A Stranger Called Me. Slip is sixteen now with other teen challenges and celebrations. Also, I have two adult novels in progress, How Easy We Forget (more of a couple’s novel) & Between The Tears And The Laughter (another family drama). I also have a chapbook of seven poems and seven short stories I’m putting together entitled It Just Ran Across My Mind. I tell you, my mind is a deep well of words and interesting characters.

If readers would like to learn more about you and your books, how can they reach you?

In 140 words or less, tell us a little about yourself.

I am a native of Baltimore, Maryland. I am married to my college and current sweetheart, Brian. We have three children and a cat. We also have a home-based business together called Paintbrush Poetry that combines his artwork with my writing. Brian’s a good man, and I appreciate all he has done to support my rather spontaneous approach to life. I am in my last semester of grad school and will be getting my masters in social work on May 20, 2011, at 9:30 a.m. My first novel was Like Sheep Gone Astray (Grand Central Publishing, 2006) which was fun to write. I am exceedingly excited about the release of my second novel, Secret Place (Urban Christian/Kensington), which was a more pain-filled journey. I am grateful for open doors and new opportunities and trust God with my all.

In 140 words or less, tell us why Secret Place would make a great addition to our personal library.

Secret Place is a story that delves deeply into an issue few people talk about, but many families are experiencing: mental illness. The story is written mainly from the perspective of a family member. Though the novel is Christian fiction, the goal is not to be preachy, but to be real. I enjoy reading and writing stories that have a touch of suspense, so that comes out in my writing. With Secret Place, I also tap into the more poetic side of me to draw out the desperation individuals can have in seemingly dark and impossible situations. I want readers to intensely feel the heavy emotions of the characters and then absorb the brightness of the hope and healing that is possible. I want readers to enjoy a good, compelling, and complete read.

What situation occurred in your life that spoke to you and said ‘it’s time to pick up a pen and write Secret Place?’

Um, situation or situations? One day when I was feeling completely exasperated (I don’t even remember what had happened, but I do remember how I felt), I got in my car and began driving. Without realizing it, I was heading to a neighborhood from my childhood that held memories and stories that had set the course for my life. As I drove by familiar houses and buildings, I got a strong sense, a compelling really, to write what I know. I drove back home and typed the first sentence of what would become Secret Place. Just to clarify, the entire novel is fiction – that is, it is entirely made up – but I had to draw on real feelings and sentiments of generations past and present.

What was the most powerful chapter in Secret Places?

I learned while writing Secret Place that the life lessons I wanted to share with readers are the same ones I’m learning myself. There are many chapters in Secret Place that have spoken to me personally. One scene in particular involves a message on desperation and what to do when God has not answered your most heartfelt prayers in the way you were hoping. There have been moments – and continue to be moments – in my life that I find myself reflecting on that chapter. It’s real. And filled with hope.

What was the most difficult chapter to write?

There is a homicide in the story and a major character permanently departs the pages. That scene was excruciating to write as all of my characters at some point become real to me. Besides the loss of this character, I had to deal with the reactions of those left behind, as well as the consequences such an act of violence would leave in its aftermath. Having to sift and sort through the minds, feelings, and actions of the remaining characters in the wake of a tragedy I knew was coming was both exhausting and painful.

What makes Secret Place different from other books in the marketplace dealing with the same topic?

The intensity, the poetry, the point of view, the purpose, the unexpected twists and turns (some of which I did not even see coming). The hope.

What’s the nicest thing a reader/reviewer has ever shared with you?

A few years ago a mother of young twins wrote me that she had stopped all of her tasks for the day because she could not stop reading my first novel, Like Sheep Gone Astray. At the time I received her comment, I was a stay-at-home mom with young children and had an idea of what such a sacrifice of time entailed. I felt a little bad, but it meant a lot. There have been many, many other comments and reviews that I could share, but for whatever reason, I thought of that one just now. (Perhaps because it’s a Saturday morning and I’m thinking of all I need to get done today!)

What’s the worst thing that a reader/reviewer could share with you?

In this field, as with any other creative or ministry-oriented venture, one must have thick skin. Admittedly, I do not. As with any book or movie or television show, there will be some who love it and get it; and there will be those who don’t. Intellectually, I know that. Even Jesus, parables and all, had haters. That being said, I still don’t think I have fully recovered from a reader telling me to my face that she hated one of my books so much she wanted to throw it out of a moving car window.

Finish this sentence…I would be honored to sit under XX’s tutelage in order to hone my writing skills.

Walter Mosely. His ability to capture the entire essence of a character in one sentence is astounding. And the first paragraphs of his novels accomplish volumes.

What advice would you like to give to new writers?

For the most part, there are no quick and easy roads to publication (and promotion!). You have to do your homework, your research, your praying, trusting, and believing. You have to keep writing and working on your craft. And never give up! You could be one query away from an open door. Also, writing your manuscript is just the beginning.

Name three things that an author must do in order to stay relevant in today’s environment?

Research. Network. Be you (today’s environment needs who you are or you would have been born in a different time).

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned about the publishing industry?

As with the rest of life, there are no guarantees. As a writer, you have to be flexible, patient, aware, and, especially, courageous.

Share with us your next project?

I am very excited about a new three-book series I’m beginning. Part mystery, part women’s fiction, all inspiration. More details to come…

Welcome to APOOO, Rosalyn!

In 140 words or less, tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a native of Kansas City, and live in Dallas, TX. I studied classical music since the age of 10, became a professional violinist when I was just out of college, and play in the Fort Worth Symphony – that’s my day job. But I started writing 20 or so years ago, first in journalism, writing for newspapers and magazines, before I published my first book about black women in opera, And So I Sing, a history of the black diva from slavery to 1990. I published my first novel More Than You Know in 2004. On a personal note, I am single, l love to read, see films, love history, art, music, etc. – i.e., a humanities geek! I also love great food (in moderation), travel to interesting cities and countries, great conversation, and tennis.

In 140 words or less, tell us why Wading Home would make a great addition to our personal library.

Even though Wading Home is centered around an historic event, hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flood, I hope it’s not seen as just another Katrina book. It is a timeless story about universal themes: love, home, family, and history. I think of it as a love story on many levels: a love story between a father and son, a man and woman, a people and their city, and a family and its land, which has given them their history. We read many books throughout our lives but the stories that stay with us and that we want in our libraries are the ones in which the characters tell us something about ourselves, and in which circumstances force them to evolve, become more of themselves by the end of the book. In Wading Home, I tried to create such a character in Julian, my protagonist, who is challenged by the circumstances to rebuild his own life, just as the storm forces a rebuilding of an entire city.

How did you come up with the title…Wading Home?

Terence Blanchard, the great New Orleans trumpet player, composed an album about hurricane Katrina called A Tale of God’s Will: Requiem for Katrina, in which he wrote a song called Wading Through. I thought about the many layers of meaning of that phrase as it applies to a flood, a storm that uproots lives. You have to wade through a lot, physically and metaphorically, to get back to where you were. But home is the big word in this novel, and I was intrigued by its multiple meanings: a place of origin, a place of safety, a place where one belongs, and is fulfilled. Wading of course suggests literally passing through water, in this case, floodwaters. Wading Home implies that you have to wade through a lot of psychological mud and muck to find your true home – your life’s purpose, the place where you belong.

Tell us about the main characters in Wading Home.

Julian, my protagonist, is a young musician, a trumpet player in the true New Orleans tradition, full of talent, ego and very driven toward success. To search for success he has left a lot behind him, his family, the city that made him the musician he is, the woman he loved, and in fact, his own history. His father Simon, is his polar opposite, a man firmly grounded in his own history, love for tradition, for home and family, and a man whose only ambition is to live for the joy of the moment – a well cooked meal, listening to great music, the sunset on a beautiful spread of land, the pleasures of friendship and family. Father and son love each other, but butt heads when the storm forces them into conflict. Velmyra, Julian’s former love, not only helps Julian search for his father after the storm, but is the person who reminds Julian of who he used to be, where he came from, and how his life might have been, had he chosen a different journey.

How did you come up with the characters for Wading Home?

The older characters, Simon and Genevieve, are inspired by my family, and just about every black family with roots in the South! They are links with the past, the ones who tell the family stories and remind us of our history; they are conservative, moral, Christian, caught up in the old ways of hide-bound tradition, and keep us in line. The character Julian was inspired by the lives of several New Orleans trumpet players who were affected by and responded to the storm in many ways. Wynton Marsalis hasn’t lived in New Orleans for many years, but after Katrina, his Lincoln Center concert helped raise millions for the city. Irvin Mayfield, who still lives in the city, lost his father in the storm, but is devoted to the city’s rebuilding and the preservation of its culture. Terence Blanchard, who lost his family home, moved back to the city after the storm and relocated the Thelonius Monk Institute of Music from L.A. to New Orleans. Julian is a composite of these musicians, and faces the dilemma they all have faced: whether to stay in New Orleans, or to leave to find success.

What are some of the main themes you portray in Wading Home?

Love is the major theme, and again, it’s love on many levels. But history is another one; and in this case, the main character draws not only knowledge from learning his history, but also a sense of purpose and clarity. The idea is that knowing your history can embolden you, strengthen you as you learn that you are part of a continuum. The fact that you are firmly grounded, that you have roots, means that winds, water, storms, are less likely to destroy you.

When I went to New Orleans after Katrina, I saw many trees that were uprooted, while some, curiously, stayed upright. The trees that fell in the flooding were the ones where the roots were weak. So I tried to show how a family’s history – its root system – is the one thing that can hold it up when times are tough. Julian and his father may be at odds, but they have come from the same stock. They are tied together in ways that are hard to break.

Another theme is the concept of home. Julian is successful, but as a musician in New York, he is living the fast life that money and fame brings. If it weren’t for the storm, he very well might never have gone home again for any substantive amount of time. But being forced home slows him down, makes him reconsider the value of home, especially when the city and his father’s house are destroyed, as well as the homes of his friends. And when he goes back to his ancestral home, the second part of the journey, the idea of home becomes even more real to him.

What makes Wading Home different from other books in the marketplace?

I like to think that it is a book that readers will remember after it is read. There are many books written today that do not challenge readers, do not make them think. They are entertainments, and that’s fine. Sometimes I enjoy a mindlessly entertaining book just as much as anyone else, the same way I enjoy an entertaining movie, but in the movie that simply entertains, I understand the pleasure of the experience is ephemeral – not meant to last past the exit door of the theater. It took me a long time to write this book, so I would love for it to linger in the reader’s mind a bit. There is a place for the current trend of romance/girlfriend/street lit books out there – they have a right to exist. But I hope that in Wading Home readers will see fully drawn, fleshed out characters who are familiar and engaging, and be transported in such a way that doesn’t happen with some of the ‘entertainments’ that are out there now.

If you had to put Wading Home in a box, what genre would it be included in and who would be the target audience?

I like to think that anyone who enjoys a good story would be part of the target audience. But I think it is more of a book for people who enjoy not only effective storytelling, but also language, developed characters, multiple themes, etc. I think of it as a love story, so that implies that women, who tend to be the ones who support books with a love story at the center, would enjoy it. I call it a literary romance set against the backdrop of jazz. I don’t think it is limited to black audiences, although the major characters are black. I find people who like this book tend to be more mature readers – people who read a lot.

What advice can you give to writers who are looking to be published authors (one day)?

There are so many ways to be published these days that anyone who wants to be published nowadays, pretty much can be. The current trend of self-publishing allows a greater number of writers to be published, but also has affected (negatively) the standard for good, publishable writing which existed years ago. Many writers nowadays don’t strive to write well, to learn the mechanics of storytelling and craft; they simply want to sell books. But I advise hopefuls to learn to write as well as they can. Take a class. Join a writing group. And read, read, and read. Read the books that make you pause, think, smile, cry – the books by the writers who write far better than you think you ever will. Then read the ones who sell well, but don’t necessarily write well, and compare them. Identify authors’ mistakes, and try to avoid them, and marvel at what they do well. Keep a journal. Read something every day, and write something every day. In other words, do all the things that good writers do, and then become one.

What lessons have you learned about the publishing industry?

It’s a tough, ever-changing business, and it’s hard, no, impossible to predict success.

Finish this sentence: In order to hone my writing skills, I would be honored to sit under __________________________’s tutelage.

Many names come to mind. Toni Morrison. James Baldwin. Zora Neale Hurston. Shakespeare. Barbara Kingsolver. Yusef Komunyakaa.

What can readers expect from you in the future?

I want to write another book of non-fiction to follow up my book on black opera singers (And So I Sing: African American Divas of Opera and Concert). I also want to write another novel, this time with a woman protagonist, a singer maybe, who rises above her circumstances to realize her genius.

Is there anything else you would like to share with APOOO readers?

Thank you for your group of readers. I’m not just saying that, I mean it. We writers write to be read, so what are we without readers? I have so many friends who have written good books that may never see the light of day, friends with books in their desk drawers, unread by anyone but them, and those who rejected them. I know the pain of being among the unread, of waiting for someone to say, okay, I’ll put your book out there. I am very grateful to be published. But even more than that, I am grateful to be read. If you read my book, I thank you.

In 140 words or less, tell us a little about yourself.

I was born and raised in Georgia. So yes, I’m a true Georgia Peach even though I lived in Chicago and North Carolina for many years. Basically, I’m just your average, down to earth, wife and mother of two who has a great passion for writing and reading. Believe it or not, I’m actually kind of quiet and laid back. I can be moody and oversensitive (Pisces trait). I have a very vivid imagination that is evident in my books and I believe in a lot of theories that most people would think bizarre.

Let’s just say I absolutely love the X-Files reruns and the entire concept of spirits, guardian angels and karma. I once had a palm reader to tell me I was a writer in another life and writing is my destiny. Isn’t that powerful? Bottom line, anyone who truly knows me will state that I’m real. I’m very approachable and have a genuine caring nature (another Pisces trait). I have my

few imperfections and struggles just like the next person. However, I believe in order to really get in touch with our true spirit, we need to discover our gifts and use them to make a difference.

In 140 words or less, tell us why True Confessions would make a great addition to our personal library.

True Confessions would make a great addition to your personal library because it is fresh, original, raw, engaging and has real, imperfect characters dealing with a crisis life has thrown their way. We can all relate. Many topical issues are addressed in a straight-forward and genuine manner. At the end of the novel, the main character has grown and life lessons are learned for a satisfactory conclusion.

How did you come up with the premise for True Confessions?

True Confessions actually started out as a short story titled These Are My Confessions in the anthology These Are My Confessions (Harper Collins, 2007). Many readers emailed or excitedly asked during signings about Kennedy and Drake and their back-story, so I decided to pen the novel-length version.

Kennedy and Drake captured my imagination as well; they stayed with me long after the short story was published. I wanted to delve deeper into what made them “tick” and a short story didn’t allow that. As a writer, for me, it is always about what makes up the core essence of my characters. How did they become who they are? What event(s) shaped their lives? What brought them to this place in their lives when they are introduced to my readers? We are all products of our childhood and I adore piecing the puzzle together to create a likeable, sometimes not so likeable character(s) that has faults, imperfections, just as we all do.

Tell us about the main character(s) in True Confessions.

True Confessions starts off bringing the drama. Readers are introduced to Kennedy Logan in her most desperate and lowest moment in time. . . she is thinking her final thoughts after making the tragic decision to end her own life. Readers, hopefully, sense the level of despair she has reached, how low she has sunk to decide to go this route. Questions are immediately raised. Why? What so horrible could possibly have happened to this person?

Readers will be introduced to Drake Collins, the love interest or should I say ex love interest of Kennedy. Drake is a piece of work and proves the point that what looks good on the outside isn’t necessarily good on the inside. I can’t wait to see what my readers think of him and his foul ways.

Readers will delight in the mother/daughter bond of Dorothy Logan and Kennedy. Dorothy is like a ferocious lioness who will fight for her daughter until her last breath. . . all the while providing unconditional love. Backing her up is Robert Logan, Kennedy’s father who loves her with all he has and still thinks of her as his little girl. Kennedy can do no wrong in his eyes.

Readers will appreciate the genuine ‘best friends forever’ friendship of Taylor and Kennedy. They are two friends who have each other’s back through thick and thin. There is a genuine love and solid bond that has existed since college days and has transcended beyond being simply friends, they are family. Neither is perfect and they both come with their childhood baggage, but their friendship is an anchor that is solid.

What are some of the main themes you portray in True Confessions?

For readers that are familiar with my previous titles, they know each of my books, spicy though they may be (LOL). . . they have all dealt with topical issues such as domestic violence, molestation, dysfunctional relationships, mental illness, low self-esteem, etc. My books always have underlying, not preachy, messages that deal with prevalent issues going on in our communities.

To be honest, I’m not exactly sure where the idea for the suicide-themed storyline initially came. My characters are weird like that (or maybe I’m the weird one); my characters come to me in dreams and in my head. They tell me their stories and I’m obligated to write them as their chosen translator. I’m like the boy in the movie, The Sixth Sense who says, ‘I see dead people’. Well, I see and hear imaginary people who speak to me because, they too, have a voice to be heard.

What makes True Confessions different from other books in the marketplace?

I feel I have a unique writing style which encompasses erotica with topical issues, all told in a very genuine dialogue that evokes an emotional tie-in to my very real and perfectly flawed characters. Those qualities make True Confessions and my previous books different from others in the marketplace.

What genre is True Confessions and who is the target audience?

The genre is erotic fiction. The target audience is any adult reader searching for an entertaining, steamy storyline that is fast paced, thought provoking, relationship based with an added twist. Readers will be fascinated and appalled at what drives some people to get what they want at whatever cost. I think I have birthed characters that my readers will develop a love/hate relationship and hopefully will be talking back to the book as they experience the various emotions that my characters pull out of them. True Confessions will make for heated book club discussions across the country and readers will definitely be talking about it the next day.

What advise would you give to those who are interested in getting published?

I know this is going to sound sappy, but so be it. . . Follow your dreams, believe in yourself and never give up. Picture where you want to be a year from now, five years from now and claim that space. We all have stories to tell, but there are only a few of us who actually sit down and put pen to paper. That makes you unique in itself.

Believe in your gift and use it every day. Network and surround yourself with people and places that uplift and promote your creativity. Listen to your inner spirit. The only place where your dream becomes impossible is in your own thinking.

I’ve Learned:

1. You can’t please all of the people all of the time. Everyone is not going to love or even like your novels. And that’s OKAY.

2. Everyone, their mother and cousins will want to point out any editorial errors they may find within the pages of your books. Everyone’s a critic.

3. You don’t necessarily have to go to college to become a successful writer. I believe there are elements of writing that comes naturally, just like breathing.

4. Everyone thinks they can write a book. However, every book in the marketplace isn’t necessarily a good book.

5. Everyone thinks their life story should be a book.

6. Talent will only get you so far. Sometimes it’s all about being in the right place at the right time.

7. The right “handlers”, i.e. agents, editors, pr person, make all the difference in the world.

8. Every fiction novel has some element(s) of truth. Don’t believe the hype.

9. Writing is a business. Sales are the bottom line. No matter how talented you are, if you don’t have the sales, you won’t get the next deal.

10. There is such a synergy when creative minds come together; it’s magic.

11. There is such a sense of freedom and joy in having the ability, from the very core of your soul to express yourself to the world; it’s almost like giving birth.

12. The new “renaissance” authors are making history and some are creating legacies.

13. Writing is a lonely and hard business to be successful in. Most of us can’t quit our day jobs.

14. Every author should pen at least one book that gives back to the universe in a positive, appealing manner to the masses.

15. You have to have a real love affair with the beauty and power of words in order to stick with it because the industry, like a lover, will take you through ups and down and sometimes screw you over.

What lessons have you learned about the publishing industry?

A few years ago I came into the industry wearing rose-colored glasses. A lot of my illusions have been lifted at this point in the game. However, my most valuable lesson about the publishing industry is that it is a business first and foremost. The bottom line, the dollar bill, still takes credence over talent and creativity. Even though I was a business major in college and realized this at some level, I naively thought considerations would be adhered to based on a level of talent.

So. . . the hardest lesson I’ve learned about the publishing industry is accepting the fact that talent alone will not take you to the next level and guarantee a successful writing career.

What can readers expect from you in the future?

I’m currently working on my next novel (always) and penning my first screenplay, which is exciting. I would absolutely love to see my books played out on the big screen, even the small screen. That would be a dream come true. So, producers, call me, let’s do lunch and chat!
Is there anything else you would like to share with APOOO readers?

To Yasmin and my APOOO readers, I love you guys and I sincerely appreciate all your support, encouragement, and kind words you’ve sent my way over the years. Muah! Hugs and kisses!

Primarily, I’m writing for entertainment value first. I write for the readers who want a mini-vacation without ever leaving the sanctuary of their home. I write for that reader who on a cold, wintry day, wants nothing other than to curl up under a warm afghan in front of a toasty fireplace, sip on some hot tea, and read about somebody else’s life. Not just read about it, but get pulled in, engulfed by it and feel the pure emotion. Feel the heat.

If readers take something away in the process, then that’s great too; that’s an added bonus. I’ve accomplished my goal and much more; it makes it all worthwhile.

Every time I feel like giving up because the publishing industry is too stressful or the monsters have reared their ugly heads, I receive an e-mail or a personal letter from an avid reader and it makes my day to realize I’ve made an impact on somebody’s life. I can’t describe that feeling.

Check out my soon to be revamped website from time to time to get news on my upcoming tour schedule, appearances, happenings, etc. And please sign my guest book page; I’d love to hear from you.

In 140 words or less, tell us why Kettle of Vultures would make a great addition to our personal library.

It’s about time that black literature shine a light on crazy black folks. Not crazy in the medical sense, but ‘crazy’ in the sense of people want the world to believe that they have both oars in the water. Joining the satirical sorority of Ishmael Reed and Zadie Smith, “A Kettle of Vultures” is a rare work in African-American satire, as the comic novel introduces characters, rarely seen in black literature. These are characters, we may know or may have heard of, but have rarely encountered. A “Kettle of Vultures” can also be distinguished in your personal library as characters of African descent are front and center and characters of other ethnic groups are comic support.

How did you come up with the title…Kettle of Vultures…Left Beak Marks On My Forehead?

Iris Chapman, the lead protagonist, is surrounded by predatory, vulture-like people, who are determined to mold her according to their own standards, instead of respecting who she is. The stress of their picking away may take it toll.

The cover is intriguing–did you have any input regarding the cover and how did you come up with it?

I had zero input other than to provide the designer to the story. I am fortunate to have a designer who ‘gets’ my satirical artistic vision. We did a couple of minor tweaks before the final cover was approved.

Tell us about the main characters in Kettle of Vultures.

1) Ms. Chickie, 80 year old, grandmother, who believes it her duty to offer her unique brand of advice

2) Iris Chapman, an image consultant with a questionable level of self-esteem.

3) Lee Artist, Iris’ mother, snobbish, delusion, determined to create Negro royalty

4) Achilles, Iris’ part time Muslim boyfriend

5) Tammy, Iris’ close friend and assistant, who is obsessed with multi-level marketing

6) Cleo, Iris’ close friend in New York City

7) Vernon, a New York City syndicated radio personality.

Victor, Iris’ self-absorbed, bad credit brother

How did you come up with the characters for Kettle of Vultures?

The characters were created in three ways: 1) Influenced by members of my family, 2) People in my life and, 3) Who the characters told me that they were.

What are some of the main themes you portray in Kettle of Vultures?

Self-esteem

Internal and external conflict over hair texture, skin color

Religion

Race relations

Internal race relations

If you had to put Kettle of Vultures in a box, what genre would it be included in and who would be the target audience?

Genre: Humor, satire

Target Audience: Black women, Natural hair community, Hispanic women, Satire lovers of all races.

What advice can you give to writers who are looking to be published authors (one day)?

People who dream of becoming published authors often edit themselves before their words reach the page. Today, there are no barriers to being published, primarily with the online publishing companies that are available at a modest cost. Whether or not a publisher acquires your work, determine to tell your story, write everyday and never give up. Lastly, never seek approval outside of yourself.

What lessons have you learned about the publishing industry?

The publishing industry is a business. Once your manuscript is complete, the real work begins, as writers must work together with their publisher to make sure that the world know about your book.

Finish this sentence: In order to hone my writing skills, I would be honored to sit under Ishmael Reed’s tutelage. Ishmael Reed taught Richard Pryor how to create his onstage characters.

What can readers expect from you in the future? More satirical work. However, in June 2011, my book of erotic fiction ”The Man Whisperer” will be published.

Is there anything else you would like to share with APOOO readers?

Dera lives, works and plays in the Oakland/Bay Area where she is employed at a local community college in curriculum and instruction. Proud of her southern roots, she is the family historian and storyteller. As a writer she has contributed to several anthologies and journals, most recently, Go, Tell Michelle: African AmericanWomen Write to the New First Lady. She has also done academic writing for reference manuals. She is a book reviewer in print and online publications and active in local literary events. She is the proud mother of a daughter and is a recent grandmother to baby Brooklynn.

In 140 words or less, tell us why Mother Wit would make a great addition to our personal library.
Dera: Mother Wit is a collection of short stories with different scenarios that women of all ages can relate to. These stories include issues of family, teenage angst, abandonment, illness as well as love and forgiveness. In addition, they are also entertaining.

Angelina: According to readers and reviewers Mother Wit brings the ‘real’ complications of the mother/daughter bond without sugarcoating it, but leaving room for hope.

How did this collaboration come about–what was the impetus behind the book?
Dera: I think it was about a year ago, after Angelia had published a collection of fiction by some younger writers, I inquired when she was going to do another one. At the beginning of 2010, she said she wanted to do a mother/daughter collection dedicated to her mother to be published the following August. I was all for that kind of theme.

Angelia: I felt it was time for mature women to tell stories of how the mother and daughter complication relate to them. I knew Dera through being part of APOOO Review team for three years and I knew she would bring fresh, timely and ageless perspectives.

Tell us a little about each story and why you felt compelled to write it?
Dera: Song for a Pretty Girl was inspired by going to my mother’s cousin Pauline’s funeral. One of her great nephews got up and said she used to tell them about her days in Chicago as a showgirl and immediately my imagination started working. I wanted to explore what kind of background and journey that a showgirl might have experienced.
I knew two different women who had been raised part of their childhoods by aunts because their mothers had been in sanatoriums for tuberculosis. I had detected that there had been some issues and I wanted to explore the sense of resentment and abandonmentwomen felt towards their mother in this kind of situation.

Angelia:

Stepmama is about a young girl who resents her new stepmother and will go out of her way to be insolent. What she does not realize is how much in common they have and how instrumental her stepmama would be to her very life. I was compelled to write it because so many of our young people are living in stepparrenting situations and it is a tricky relationship.

Divana’s Mama is about how a mature teen can sometimes run interference in the life of a lonely mother and how connected women are in families. The story actually came from a situation near and dear to me.

On Her Own Two, tackles the subject of teen pregnancy, single parenthood and abortion. I was compelled to tell this story because far too many young women without fathers feel the need to get male attention from inappropriate men and they often have children assuming it will make the boys love them even more.

How did you come up with the storylines for Mother Wit?

Angelia: Most stories I write simply come from observing what is going on around me.

What are some of the main themes portrayed in Mother Wit?
Dera: Relationships, sickness, death and dying, growing pains, abandonment, forgiveness.

Angelia: s tepparenting, older women/younger men, abortion, ambition…

What makes Mother Wit different from other books in the marketplace?
Dera: I don’t know if I can really say since I haven’t read every book on this topic; this theme has been done before. However, as I said before the themes in these stories will provoke, entertain and make you think. I don’t see how any woman could walk away from this collection and not reflect on their relationship with their mother and if that mother is still living, pick up the phone and give their mother a call.

Angelia: Mother Wit does not try to tie up situations in neat little packages and it tries to tell a story without being overly salacious or trendy.

Who is the target audience for Mother Wit and what message do you want them to take with them?
Dera: I would say women of all ages, but a man who likes fiction would enjoy also. He would definitely want to purchase copies for the women in his life.

Angelia: I would say all readers ages 14 and older. My youngest known reader has been 13 and the oldest is in her 90s and they all reported getting something from the messages and being able to relate.

What advice can you give to writers who are looking to be published authors (one day)?
Dera: Well, I am sure you have heard, write and keep writing. One thing that I have always known, but has been become clear in the last week, is you must be connected to the literary world and be abreast of what is going on in publishing. I met a young woman writer last week who wrote a pretty good book she self-published in 2007 but it didn’treally do as well as it should. In talking with her, it was revealed she had never heard of well-known book sites and authors. She was more or less in a vacuum. You need to know what’s up.

Angelia:

To continue to hone their craft, realize that every book is not for every reader and never allow others doubts to stop them from pursuing their dreams.

What lessons have you learned about the publishing industry?
Dera: Those I have mentioned above but there is still a lot more to learn. Publishing is a business and you better know it and if you don’t, you will soon know.

Angelia: Since I have always been my own publisher I cannot speak to the publishing industry at large. However, I must say based on stories that I have been told, owning myself has saved much heartache and drama.

Finish this sentence: In order to hone my writing skills, I would be honored to sit under___

Dera: Jewell Parker Rhodes or Tayari Jones’s tutelage.

Angelia: I would be honored to sit under Maya Angelou’s tutelage.

Is there anything else you would like to share with APOOO readers?
Dera: I have lots of stories to tell and I hope I get to share them with the world. To keep in touch with me, join me at Facebook or visit my blog.

Angelia: Thanks for having me and allowing me to talk about something I would do even if I did not have a paying audience.

Dera and Angelina thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to hang out with APOOO and we wish each of you many blessings with your literary endeavors.
