Book Review by Jennifer Coissiere

Two of my favorite things in the world are reading and eating. Angelia Vernon Menchan provided me with some food for thought, and recipes to tickle my taste buds in Re-Rambled: Food and Thought: Ramblings Special Edition. In this volume of ramblings, Menchan offers her thoughts on the things she has seen and experienced. While I cannot say that I could relate to all the things I read, I could relate to some. I could not help but to stop and reassess some of my thoughts and ways of doing things. I would like to believe that is part of the message Mrs. Menchan is trying to get across. We all need to sometimes stop and look at the things we are doing and if our life outcomes are not as we expect, then maybe it is time to stop, reflect, reassess, regroup, and do something different. I understand some people prefer to find out things the hard way but I cannot help but to wonder why when someone else has already been there, done it, and wants to share their experiences or thoughts on it.

The recipes are mouth-watering to read; I can only imagine how the food will taste. I love seafood and the “Something Fishy” recipe had ingredients such as red snapper, garlic, and olives; all things that I like eating. There are also feel good recipes, such as “My Macaroni and Cheese,” “Oven Baked Yams,” and “Bread Pudding” that uses croissants instead of crusty French bread. People tend to look for foods that make them feel good. Words of wisdom that have you feeling awesome about yourself and delicious foods go hand in hand to feed the soul.

Wisdom is said to come with age, but after reading Mrs. Menchan’s thoughts I could see how wrong that statement is. Wisdom is something that we collect throughout the years just like our favorite recipes. No matter young or old, there is a message for everyone in Re-Rambled: Food and Thought: Ramblings Special Edition. The message you find may not be specifically for your life, but possibly for a friend or family member. The last four lines in “Until Someone, Anyone Listens,” sums up just what Mrs. Menchan wants for those of us who read her work to do: “Take from it what you can use, / And the rest toss it over your shoulder, / Maybe, / It will land on someone else!” I recommend these rambles, thoughts, life-lessons, and epiphanies to everyone.
