So much seems to be going on right now…can we get off the roller coaster…chill…take a moment from the madness?

Seems folks need other things to distract them…including someone else’s misery…sigh.

I have a great work group…and even tho’ it includes six women and one lone male…for the most part we all get along well…until today.

As I was driving home I was thinking about the workplace, the economy, whether or not my daughter managed to make dinner without burning it…lol…and a few things that made me go hmmm today.

Here’s what I crossed my mind…

The Octuplet mom got more than she bargained for. She might have wanted 15 minutes of fame and a few million to go with it…but there is so way I would want to be her for anything in the world. 14 kids is more than a notion…but not being able to leave home without the paparazzi all up in your face and your kids faces…and no bodyguard to boot…whew who would want to live like that.

I know we have freedom of speech…but I think that somethings should be off limits. Including cartoons that portray our Presidents in a negative, racist, terroristic manner. All Presidents…including Dubya (heck no I didn’t vote for him)…should be accorded a level of respect while they’re in the office and somethings should not be allowed. Respect begins at home…maybe if Americans started respected each other more…we would be considered rude, arrogant, elitist when we’re travelling abroad. And respect can begin with how we treat our Presidents…ALL OF THEM…the good, the bad and the ugly.

Read an article today that said more than 50% of us were concerned about losing our jobs this year. I pray it’s only a concern and NOT A reality.

Lifting a girlfriend up in prayer–her brother knocked on her door Sunday morning after driving too many miles to count right now…from TX with his wife and five kids. He’s been unemployed since August 2008…and had no choice but to reach out for a lifeline. He still doesn’t have the job of his choice…but he’s working at the local McDonald’s in the meantime. As my girlfriend said, ‘one day at a time and that’s what family is for. Back during the Great Depression there weren’t any shelters…families pulled together and took care of each other.’ Words to live by. I admire and respect my girlfriend for stepping up to the plate and helping out her brother and his family.

Drama in the work[place…I love my work group. For the most part, we’re a fun-loving group. We enjoy hanging out with each other and joking around…but sometimes we GO TOO FAR…as we found out last night. Loose lips sink trips. Last night someone said something that offended another team member and now they’re not speaking. Mind you…they’re GOOD FRIENDS. I know this will pass…but I hope it’s soon…and without too much fall out.

My son is taking the SAT again next month. He did well the first time but he wants to boost his score. Hmmm I haven’t seen him studying one iota…but he things he can boost his score by 200 points because he has another year of coursework under his belt. I hope he’s right.

My son believes that hubby and I should pay for him to go to the prom. Why? When did the prom become a necessity? Told him if he wants to go he needs to get a job or do some chores to earn money. He still hasn’t done either; guess he doesn’t want to go to the prom.

On the Today Show yesterday, they shared five signs of heart disease for men. My husband has four of the five. Glad our primary care physician scheduled him for a stress test this week. Now she told hubby she was surprised that he didn’t give her a hard time about it. WTF…she’s made another comment to my husband that I thought was off-base…I asked him did he ask her if she was confusing him with someone else? If a doctor recommends a stress test…and it’s something to help you…why would you give her back talk?

I missed The View today…what happened? Oh I heard that John McCain has declined to appear on the View again…he won’t be missed by me. LOL.

Snoop has a new show titled Dog After Dark. I don’t plan to watch it but it did make me go hmmmm when I heard the announcement.

I received a book order from amazon today. Three books in the box…but no peanuts, bubble wrap, shrink wrap or NOTHING. When did amazon stop protecting books in the box. Is this a sign of the times.

I saw a local play last night that was directed by my press aide and one of the stars in the play was an attorney that I work with. Another co-worker told us that the play wasn’t very good and that our co-worker was a mess/horrible. I adjusted my expectations to expect the worst…and hope for the best. Glad I didn’t listen to our co-worker to the point of staying home as the play was quite entertaining and the attorney/co-worker was a hoot.

If you said you didn’t want the money…why did you change your mind? It never ceases to amaze me how politicians lack scruples or balls. Several Republican governors said that they wouldn’t take any money from the stimulus plan for their states. Seems too of them have changed their minds…Rick Perry(Governor of TX) and Mark Sanford (Governor of SC)…now they’re on board but still against the package. Well, if you’re that against it, why are you taking the money? If Obama’s package is so terrible…why haven’t you come up with your own plan…to KEEP YOUR STATE FROM GOING UNDER? It’s easy to complain about what’s wrong and how horrible a job you believe Obama is doing…but what creative idea have you come up with lately for your state? Nothing…hmmm guess you’re eating crow and taking the money. Don’t let the door hit you where the good lawd split you…too bad you weren’t able to grow a pair of b&lls and actually JUST SAY NO…and BE ABOUT IT.

Thirteen Things about MY CHILD WHO WANTS TO STAY HOME ALONE…OVERNIGHT.

Hubby and I are going to an event which will require us to spend two nights away from home.

It was supposed to be a family event, but our teenage, high-school age son has decided he doesn’t want to travel with us.

Son would prefer to stay home. He is making the argument to stay home alone, overnight while we’re away.

Growing up, as a minor, I NEVER got the chance to stay home ALONE…at least not OVERNIGHT.

I was 17 year-olds and a college student, living away from home, 3,000 miles from home, before I ever stayed ‘home alone…overnight.’

Although, I recall growing up with girlfriends, who were allowed to stay home (alone, overnight) as early as the age of 15.

Was not happening with my grandmother; unless you were over the age of 18 or on your own and no longer her dependent.

She was not concerned about us, per se, but, who else would be in her house while she was away and what they would be doing.

She was concerned if we would have friends over…would our friends include the opposite sex…if we would have parties…would our friends spend the night…would there would be alcohol, drugs, sex between unmarried folks in her house. Oh and the main concern–WOULD HER HOUSE AND THINGS BE INTACT AND THE WAY SHE LEFT THEM when she returned home;)

In fairness to my son, and considering this as an exercises to help him develop his decision-making skills, as well as allowing him an opportunity to be independent in a somewhat controlled environment, I’m thinking about this.

I’ve checked the laws of PA and as far as I can tell there doesn’t appear to be an age-minimum for home alone, overnight. BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT A PARENT SHOULDN’T USE COMMON SENSE.

As I type this, my son is in the background reminding me that he’s old enough to drive, old enough to drop out of school (he wouldn’t dare…he enjoys the good life too much and knows that he needs to have a good income in order to live in the lifestyle he aspires to), he can get a full-time job (albeit probably not one that will pay more than minimum wages), and during the time we’re away he has a physics exam that he would prefer to take on the scheduled day rather than postpone.

Did I mention that he’s a very mature and responsible child?

Okay…anyone buying any of that as a reason for leaving a MINOR, home alone, overnight? LOL. On a serious note, each child is different and should be evaluated on their own merits…so check out the discussion questions below and share your answers via the comment section.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Were you ever allowed to stay home alone, overnight as a teen?

If so, at what age?

If you have children, at what age did you or will you allow your children to stay home along, overnight?

As we get ready to ring in another year, I thought it would be a good idea to share some of the crazy (and not so crazy) things that get dropped on New Years Day. Note that because I live in PA most of my items are concentrated in this state. I was actually quite surprised at some of the things dropped in my home state.

My cousin, Carlton, sent me an article today by Norma White titled You Want Change? Try These Ideas. Some of you might have seen the article, as it was written back in October, primarily as a response to the Presidential candidates change platforms. As I read through White’s list, I realized that while I agreed with some of her suggestions for change, others of them were faulty and inaccurate. Norma’s list is provided below, along with my comments. For Norma’s original column, CLICK HERE. .

Thirteen Ideas for Change

Limit Congress from serving more than two terms. That is all that presidents are allowed. I agree but Hmmm…I guess we could also say isn’t this supposed to be the purpose of elections; if folks ain’t doing the job we want we need to vote them out. (or change the Constitution and add term limits for Congress and we know this ain’t going to happen…sigh.)

Stop Congress from voting for their own raises.–Yep this was written into the Constitution…and probably will not be changed…but if we don’t like the job our Congress person is doing…we can always try and vote them out.

Stop paying for lawmakers’ high-priced insurance premiums. After all, they are only part-time employees. They might pass some law changes on the insurance companies, if they had to find one.–Good idea and I hate that it’s part of their pay/benefits package.

Stop paying lawmakers their full salary after serving just one term, or at retirement. We need to get rid of that pension plan; they’ve let other companies get rid of theirs. You were lucky to get 40 to 50 percent of your salary after working somewhere for 35 years, but they get 100 percent.–Agree; but lawmakers have to serve more than one term to get their full salary.

Make Congress pay into the Social Security system. They make laws for it. If they spent some of their own money, they might be interested in making it solvent.–.Congress doesn’t pay into the SS system and nor do they receive any benefits from it. However, they do have a special plan/fund that they collect from. Now I do agree that that plan should be revamped and they should pay into the SS system and receive the same type of compensation that many of us will receive when we retire…which is not barely enough to live on without a part-time job, or a 401 plan and a pension. Oh yeah and that ‘special plan’ we the taxpayer’s do pay for it.

Have a computer program that cross checks Social Security numbers with fingerprints to stop fraud on many fronts. –I don’t think this will work because a Social Security number cannot be used as a form of ID.

Stop bailing out mortgage companies and banks that give loans to people who cannot afford them. False…those are not the companies being bailed out; banks/mortgage companies are not being bailed out because they gave loans to people who could not afford them. The package passed by Congress is to “bail-out” banks that issued bonds backed by mortgages that they believed to be good and to “bail-out” companies that insured these bonds.

Stop companies from paying CEOs and other executives outrageous salaries and bonuses while doing away with workers’ pensions.–Hmmm…unless companies are owned by the government, rather than publicly held, I don’t think we have any say in how much CEOs/executives make.

Stop all unnecessary spending so we will have the money for our nation’s security, and to help needy and elderly Americans.–Okay but a lot of folks consider spending to help the needy (ie medicaid, food stamps, education, healthcare) and elderly Americans to be unnecessary including, it sounds like Norma.

Stop permitting anyone to have a photo with their face covered on driver’s licenses. –Hmmm ??? I believe the law was changed and you can’t get a driver’s license if your face is covered.

Stop handing out aid to illegal aliens. If we did, then Medicaid and the food stamp program would have enough money to aid the aged and the poor.–Where is the data to support this argument? I work for a government entity and the last time I checked if you were an illegal alien you couldn’t receive benefits; now if you have kids in America then yes you can receive aid for dependent children (because born in America makes you a citizen). Sorry, but you can’t say you’re not going to help out dependent children, well you can say it but that doesn’t make it so, who are citizens (change the Constitution if you don’t like it) just because there mother is an illegal alien…who is probably illegally cleaning your home while you pay her under the table. I wonder if Ms. White is aware that some illegal immigrants do pay social security taxes…worth billions of dollars…sort of a surplus/windfall for the government as these individuals will never be able to collect these monies unless they become citizens…and then I wonder if it’s only the money earned after they become a citizen. SOURCE

Secure our borders; –okay but we need to secure all of them including the Northern borders and just where exactly is this money going to come from to do this? stop allowing babies born to illegal aliens in the United States automatic U.S. citizenship.–Okay but we need to change the Constitution in order to do this.

Stop the abuse of our benevolent welfare system. We feed children free meals three times a day until they are 17. Churches give away good, clean clothes. Companies buy and donate school supplies. Emergency rooms provide health care at taxpayer expense and the food stamp program is buying food at home. What are parents doing for their children?–Okay, so we should let kids go hungry like a third-world country; we should dictate what churches do…what happened to separation of church and state; who are any of us to dictate what a company does with their money…maybe if we’re a majority shareholder we can…but 99% of us are not; so ER should turn their backs on folks needing medical attention…just let them die in ER?; is White aware that the food stamp program helps those in NEED AND THE ELDERLY…the very folks she said we should help earlier?

Today was the worst of days.

There was good news.

I wasn’t laid off.

There was bad news.

The raise I was expecting in January won’t materialize.

As with 40 some other states, our state is also experiencing a budget crisis.

Actually there’s so much red it’s hemorrhaging.

By the end of the fiscal year, we could be almost 2 Billion dollars in the hole. Gulp.

By withholding raises, from non-union employees, the state hopes to save $14.3 million dollars.

Seems sort of paltry given that we’re anticipating a shortfall in the billions.

I guess it’s a symbolic gesture.

And, even tho’ we don’t know when we will ever receive raises again, hubby and I both still have jobs. We have our health, our families, our home, some savings/investments. But, why do I feel that I need more?

For the last 17 years, Thanksgivings have been spent in MD with my in-laws. Even tho’ we traveled two hours to be with them, I generally got off easy. Granted I would cook Thanksgiving Dinner sometime before the weekend, but usually I was only responsible for something mundane…like mac&cheese or the beverages. This year we decided that we didn’t want to travel and would host Thanksgiving at our home. Sounded good since I would be on vacation this week and would have a few days to prep. Well, it’s now the Night Before Thanksgiving and can I say I haven’t done as much in the last 24 hours as I thought I would. So, while I’m thankful that my in-laws won’t be arriving before 2PM tomorrow, rather than 9am, I’m more concerned about what I need to do right now…fall asleep or finish cooking. LOL. In the meantime, here’s my list of Thirteen Things about the Day Before Thanksgiving.

Planned to start the day at 8am; was tired and decided to sleep in. When I finally opened my eyes, it was 11am. So, I started the day 3 hours behind.

Needed to finish grocery shopping. Over coffee and the newspaper, pondered just how long it would take me to shop. I hate shopping and only do it several times a year–Thanksgiving, Christmas, Kid’s b-day, Rick’s b-day–hubby does it the rest of the year.

Finally, left home and was ready to begin my day. Oh, so I though. Drove right by the supermarket that’s closest to my home…although the one that hubby hates…lol. Guess that was on my mind as I ended up further away and at the SUPER-GIANT…I get lost in that store. Which is why I don’t shop there often. After an hour in the store (I would be in there a total of 1.5 hours), and wondering if the madness would ever end, I made a mental note to stop by the Wine & Spirit store before I left the shopping plaza.

WOW…I can’t believe how much I spent ($$$) on stuff for basically a one-day meal. I was shocked and it was obvious that I didn’t grocery shop that often. After leaving an arm and a leg at the store, I decided to stop by the ATM/Bank before heading home. Completely forgot about stopping by the Wine & Spirit store.

Arrived home and hubby had cleaned up the downstairs and was putting the finishing touches on the hardwood floor as I came in with 10 bags and a few less dollars in my bank account.

Hopped online to see what happened while I was away…it was a lot…seems that more folks worked than not today and many were chatty. As I’m getting too settled in to read emails, kids arrived home and brought their noise, energy and enthusiasm with them. LOL. And, I wouldn’t have changed anything about that because it felt good to be at home when they arrived…and to find out firsthand what happened in their world today. And boy were they chatty. LOL. That was a good thing, I love when my kids open up and talk to me and hubby. Today was a good day for both of them as all was right with the world.

But, hanging out with family meant I didn’t make it to the post office, office depot or the nail salon. All of that will have to wait until Friday (or Saturday…since I’m shopping on Friday).

But, son did talk me into going to Verizon to check out the new Blackberry Storm that he wants for Christmas. None in the store…they needed to order it…but said it would be available for 12/8. I needed to decide if I wanted to spend $200 on a phone, plus pay a monthly fee of $ 30 for a total of $560. Told son if he really wanted it that it would be his only gift…because honestly folks I can’t see why a child would need a Blackberry. Hubby said if that’s all son really wants we should get it for him and a few stocking stuffers. Hmm…video games cost how much…I’m rethinking some of the stuffers. LOL. Son turned 16 this year and we gave him a car, paid for his insurance (and will continue to do so as long as he’s in school or until he’s 22, which ever comes first) and hubby or I fill his car with gas every other week. Hmmm sounds like that was Christmas and b-day present for the next 6 years!

After leaving the Verizon store, and head still swimming from the price of the Storm(hmmm should have named it the Hurrricane because the price was deadly), I decided I needed a drink and remembered that I needed to visit the Wine and Spirit store.

From there to Bath and Body and Hallmark to pick up gifts and cards for sister-in-laws birthday. Hope she likes what we got.

Figured since I had been out and about that when I arrived home hubby would have dinner started. Not today…I think he was boycotting since he cooks 80% of the meals. LOL. Oh well, no take-out/fast food today, after spending $$$ at the grocery store, wine & spirit store, and bath and body shop…we were eating in. I made an enchilada casserole which everyone loved and then delved into the Evening Before Thanksgiving cooking.

With a glass of wine nearby, I’m prepping and preparing Thanksgiving dinner. So far, the string beans have been cooked. The holy trinity (celery, green pepper, onion) has been prepped for the potato salad (will make tomorrow) and sausage/mushroom dressing (will prepare this evening and cook tomorrow) and I’m seasoning the turkey so that I can put it in the oven and it can cook overnight.

Only a few minutes to show time, and my guilty pleasure for today, the Barbara Walter’s special with Michelle and Barack Obama. A fitting ending for a busy (and expensive) day.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL and may your day be filled with laughter, joy, family, friends, peace and prosperity.

Today is the 33rd annual Great American Smoke-Out (GASO) Day. Annually, on the third Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society for the last 33 years has asked smokers to give up smoking just for today. The belief is if smokers can quit for a day, make that first quit attempt, then maybe they can continue for another day and so forth and so forth until they’ve quit for good.

If you are a smoker, or have a friend or family member who is, today’s meme is Thirteen reasons for QUITTING SMOKING.

Your Health

High Cost of Cigarettes

Increase Your Life Span

Live to Watch Your Son/Daughter Graduate From High School

Walk Your Daughter Down the Aisle

You Want to Get Pregnant

Lowers the risk of lung cancer, other cancers, heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung disease.

Ex-smokers live longer than people who keep smoking. Ex-smokers enjoy a higher quality of life with fewer illnesses from cold and flu viruses, better self-reported health, and reduced rates of bronchitis and pneumonia.

Smoking is less socially acceptable now than it was in the past. (If you smoke, do you like going outside in the cold to smoke?) Smokers may also find their prospects for dating or romantic involvement, including marriage, are largely limited to other smokers, who make up less than 20% of the adult population.

If a mother smokes, there is a higher risk of her baby developing asthma in childhood, especially if she smoked while she was pregnant.

Smoking is also linked to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and low-birth weight infants.

Babies and children raised in a household where there is smoking have more ear infections, colds, bronchitis, and other lung and breathing problems than children from non-smoking families.

SECONDHAND SMOKE KILLS! Studies have shown that secondhand smoke causes thousands of deaths each year from lung cancer and heart disease in healthy non-smokers.
