Christmas Grouch
By
Adrianne Byrd
I can almost bet that this article is just suppose to be one of those cutesy things where I sit up here and type about how wonderful I think the Christmas holidays are. How it’s the time for fantastic family get togethers, fabulous Christmas parties and shopping like that wonderful plastic card doesn’t have a credit limit and that its pesky bill won’t be due any time soon. Oh, I know-what if I just sit here and type out all my fabulous Christmas recipes that are sure fire ways to get your never-gonna-accept-you mother-in-law to finally-finally give you a compliment?
Sorry. I can’t do any of that.
My family doesn’t do get togethers, I can’t remember the last time I went to a Christmas party and Lord knows what I do in the kitchen just barely qualifies as cooking. I guess that leaves the shopping, which I always-always wait until Christmas Eve to do. One gift per person and it’s usually from Wal-Mart. I’m in and out in about an hour.
Bummed out yet?
Sorry, but Christmas is and never has been a big deal in my family. Wow. I’m starting to sound like Scrooge. Let me start again. I like the idea of Christmas. I like what we tell everyone what it supposed to represent. Peace, love and good will toward your fellow man. I love all the sappy Christmas movies and even how you can blackmail children into doing practically anything with the threat of telling Santa Claus.
Fun stuff.
Okay. Right about now you’re thinking what I need is to join a good church home. The Church really knows and celebrates the true meaning of Christmas. And that is true. Who doesn’t like watching memory-challenged children put on a production about baby Jesus and the three wise men? And the music? Forgetaboutit. The church is rocking during the holidays.
All right. Put that on my list. I like Christmas music. Oh, and lights! Christmas lights are like Picassos in some neighborhoods where competition is fierce and ain’t nobody scared of a little thing called an electric bill. Okay, maybe there’s one last thing. Love.
It might be just me, but usually the week of Christmas, I see more hand holding and public displays of affection. I guess people are happier, joyful, and even hopeful. As a romance writer that does sort of warm my heart.
All right. All right. So I like Christmas. The happy people, bribing children, watching baby Jesus come into the world, lights, Christmas movies and music. I like it all.
Just don’t tell anybody—I sort of like pretending to be a grouch.
