What plans do you have for New Year’s Eve? Or how will you bring in the New Year?
What’s on your menu for New Year’s Day Dinner?

Plans for New Year’s Eve–I’m thinking about going to church. However, I may stay home and finish sewing a much needed coat!
New Year’s Day Dinner-hmmm, I thought about some red beans and rice. But, I found out one of my favorite restaurants will be open. I may go for some salmon croquets instead. Will eat their collard greens, but no black eye peas. . .
New Year’s Day superstitions–not washing clothes–my grandmother (God rest her soul) said that means you will “wash out” one of your relatives. The other is a man coming into the house first with money in his pocket.
Three books: The Women Who Raised Me, and two children’s books: We Are the Ship and a book on Robert Smalls.
Stay home, eat seafood,(Shrimp & Lobster tails), and drink sparkling grape juice.
New Years Day menu, Black eyed peas (of course), greens, Pound Cake, smoked brisket and rib tips, maybe potato salad, corn bread, and and.. dunno what else this bunch will come up with.
Man entering the house first for the new year.
New Year’s Eve just Mench and I with a bit of bubbly!
New Years day Church services in the morning…
My New Years menu is always the same, greens, black-eyed peas, chicken, baked sweet potatoes
I am not sure if this is a superstion but I always make sure my finances are straight at year end…

What plans do you have for New Year’s Eve? Or how will you bring in the New Year?
We will be at my mommy’s house drinking, playing board games, doing karaoke, and praying Dick Clark doesn’t pass out as the ball drops.
What’s on your menu for New Year’s Day Dinner?
My mommy’s cooking so whatever it is, it’ll be down home southern style, minus chitterlings (we don’t eat those)
Do you have any New Year’s superstitions? If so, share one or two with us.
Yes! The most important one is a man being the first to cross my mom’s threshold. That means no one in or out unless they have a penis and is over 21…lol
Taking the tree down before the first and having everything sparkling clean.
Having money in our pockets so we won’t be broke for 2009.

Darnetta´s last blog post..I’ll NEVER Accept It
My New Years eve will be quiet and low key. New Years dinner will include chitterlins, black-eyed peas for luck and greens for money. Probably, a hen, and rice. Time to assess the old year and plan for the new one.
Dera´s last blog post..Sister Souljah, Part III: The Creative Side
On my reading list for Janaury is:
Red Light, Green Light- Margaret Hodge Johnson
Tempest Tales- Walter Mosley (Marcus BOM)
Where the Line Bleeds- Jessamyn West (APOOO BOM)
My carryovers are:
Straight Outta East Oakland- Harry Louis Williams II
Seduced by Moonlight- Janice Sims
A Mercy- Toni Morrison
New Year traditions or supersitions are the above mentioned black-eyed peas for luck and greens for money. I’ve heard that one about a man being the first in or out of your house from others but that is not one I remember my family observing.

What plans do you have for New Year’s Eve? Unfortunately I will be celebrating New Years at home alone- I have Pink Eye which is contagious so my kids will be with their dad. So I will most likely just watch movies or read and pray for a better year.
Or how will you bring in the New Year? New Year’s will probably be the same. I will have my brother bring me some dinner from my parents- the usual: greens, black-eye peas and chicken and read some more and watch t.v.
What’s on your menu for New Year’s Day Dinner? I am not a cook, I leave that task to my southern -bred mother so the usual as stated above will be on the menu.
Do you have any New Year’s superstitions? If so, share one or two with us. I am not by nature superstitious, but my mother is very very superstitious, the only ones I try not to tempt is: allowing a male to be the first through the door on the new year, not washing any clothes, and having money in your pocket in the new year and making sure the christmas tree is down before the new year.

I used to go to church every year until about 8 years go, but found I wasn’t getting anything out of it. I go to a huge church and the crowds and drama at watch night just isn’t for me. So now I stay home on New Years Eve and spend time with God. I think it’s the most intimate time we have all year. I feel like he’s waiting for me and I get a clear message about what I need to do, who I need to forgive, and anything else that’s been pending on the spiritual to do list. It’s so awesome. Anyway, I reflect on the past year, set goals for the new and pray. After the ball drops, I make some calls, go to bed and wake up in my new purpose and destiny.
As for food, I’m with Rosa, I do seafood on New Years Day. My family loves it. We all chip in and buy different things: shrimp, lobster tails, crabs, crabmeat. We make shrimp scampi pasta and pasta salad and green beans almondine. Started the tradition about 3 years ago and my life has been so much more propersous, particularly with respect to finances.
I’m the least superstitious person on the planet, but I have to admit, nobody washes clothes.
Happy New Year to you ladies. Much love!
Forgot my books:

Bishop’s Daughter by Tiffany Warren

Beta Gamma Pi by Stephanie Perry Moore
Karen–do you like black eyed peas?
Rosa–yum yum seafood.
Angelia–ain’t nothing wrong with having finances in order…that’s always a good thing.
Dona–what’s the significance behind the wet clothes?
Donnica–Have fun partaying and bringing in the NY!
Michelle–have fun with your hubby, and sister!
Rozz-be careful and safe no matter where you are!
Darnetta–sounds like there’s going to be BIG FUN at your mom’s house and I’m feeling you regarding Dick Clark…hehe. Okay and what’s up with taking the tree down before the New Year…that’s a new one and one I’ve never heard before. Oh and about that penis thang…it ain’t all it’s cracked up to be…hehe. Actually, I think I need to have a few girlfriends be the first to enter my house so that I will have more local friendships this year…hehe.
Dera–my maternal grandmother observed ALL superstitions…except the tree one and that’s only because she didn’t know about it…hehe. But I DON’T observe any of them…so I’ve probably washed folks out of my family…cleansing is good for the soul hehe…but seriously if I have faith in God why would I give credence to superstitions.
Susan–so sorry to hear you have pink eye…get well soon! xoxo
Rhonda–I hear you about not getting anything out of watch night service…and as long as God knows your heart…I think you can congregate with him in your own personal space on this eve.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
Rhonda, I want a copy of Bowen’s upcoming release…off to request an ARC…hehe.
Yasmin,
Michelle was at Faith and Fiction this summer and we were discussing Holy Ghost Corner. I was sooooooooo impressed with her. Lord the scriptural signifcance and detail she puts into researching the Bible on her books. I mean you would never know because they’re so funny and seem to be so light, but she is very serious and clearly a scholar on the Bible. It was quite a learning experience for me to watch her present.
I love ARCs. I have her publicist contact info if you want it.
