Cosmetic Surgery! Why Not? by Rambling Raven
One of my dearest friends has decided to undergo cosmetic surgery. She will have a tummy tuck and some liposuction done. She thought long and hard about the entire process, she mulled over the decision for two years to be exact. You see, after four children (two of which were delivered via cesarean), she just couldn’t seem to get her body back to the shape she wanted. Yes, she tried diets and exercise, but still couldn’t get rid of the fat in various areas. She finally decided that surgery was the only way to remove those trouble spots.
Now, in this day and age you would think that a tummy tuck and a little lipo wouldn’t cause a stir. However, my dear friend found out that not everyone in her immediate circle was gung-ho about the entire thing. Some folk, like her mother, believes that it’s all just an exercise in vanity. Even her husband believes she may be going a little too far by going under the knife. He figured since he isn’t complaining about her body, what’s the big deal? A few family members wanted to know what she is really trying to accomplish. They debated whether or not she (and other women who have cosmetic surgery) is being influenced by the media and celebrities. Especially, as one put it-“…regular sistas don’t get those things done.”
My friend isn’t trying to change her facial features or go from B cups to DD cups. No, she is having skin and fat removed. And since plastic/cosmetic surgery is so commonly done she isn’t taking that great of a risk health wise either. Sure a bit of vanity may play a role in her decision but I think if it makes her feel better about herself and isn’t too drastic, why not?
After a lot of debating and thinking, I can’t put off that I won’t seek cosmetic surgery at some point in my life. Hell, when I am 60 I may want to look 40. As long as I am realistic about what to expect and comfortable within my own skin, I wouldn’t rule it out. I think we should age gracefully but at the same time I don’t see where a little help from a well trained surgeon wouldn’t hurt.
I wouldn’t want to walk around like Michael Jackson, where I no longer look like myself. However, I see nothing wrong with a little nip/tuck. We live in a world where, unfortunately looks do matter. And I wouldn’t begrudge anyone who wants to preserve theirs. And I especially do not think that black women should be made to feel ashamed of having any work done. As I stated earlier, as long as the person has a good grasp on reality and isn’t trying to become a totally different person, I see no issue. What say you—to cut or not to cut?

I have thought about it to help remove some of the fat and extra skin I have in problem areas. I think as long as it is done in moderation it is that person choice.
I strongly doubt I would ever do it.
All the best to those ladies who do!

I don’t see what the problem is. If I could afford it I wouldn’t mind getting rid of some “rolls” LOL
LOL!! I hear ya, Uranie. I need to get rid of some fat and some skin that refuses to tone back up.
