APOOO recently had a chance to catch up with author Gwyneth Bolton…as she was taking a breather and basking in the glow of her new release The Law of Desire. (Stay-Tuned, a book review will be coming from APOOO later this week.) We thought it would be a good idea to chat with her for a moment and find out how she countdowns to Christmas. Some of her answers were absolutely precious and a few were LOL funny. Grab a cup of your favorite beverage and come spend a few moments with APOOO as we countdown to Christmas with author Gwyneth Bolton.
Gwyneth, welcome to APOOO. Let’s jump right in with today’s interview. In 140 words or less, imagine you were a Christmas decoration, describe what decoration you would be and why?
Oh that’s an easy one! Given my innocence and my general sweet demeanor (wink-wink), I’d be a beautiful black angel on the top of the tree with a lovely cream satin gown, fluffy wings and a sparkling halo to boot. The tree topper, that’s me…
Okay, time for a shameless plug. In 140 words or less, describe why your latest release would make a wonderful Christmas present.
The Law of Desire would be the perfect Christmas present because it shows family closeness at its finest. It is a powerful tale about how love can help you overcome anything that life throws at you. And, it will help bring some much-needed heat to a cold winter night, steamy, seductive, scorching heat. (Aw suki suki now…)
If you were one of the Twelve Days of Christmas items, what would you be and why?
I’d be the 12th Day of Christmas with the Twelve Drummers Drumming. My ancestors were from the Motherland and I am a child of hip-hop so I have to have the drum!
Share your most memorable childhood Christmas experience.
It was probably the Christmas when I was about five or six years old. It was memorable because it was one where my folks were still together and there were lots of presents under the tree. I think I got a Baby Alive doll that year. I just remember everyone being happy and me and my sister Jennifer opening all our gifts and mommy and daddy watching us with smiles. I still believed in Santa Claus and it was all-good!
What was the best present you received as a child?
The best present would have to be a tie between my first Easy Bake oven and the time I got the Barbie dream house. It was the old school high-rise Barbie dream house with the elevator where you pulled the string and it went up and down. It really is a toss up between making those little nasty cakes in that Easy Bake and playing with that dream house.
What has been the best present you’ve received as an adult?
Every year I have to get a funky colorful hat and scarf set, and if I get matching gloves, that’s killer! Last Christmas, I got a beautiful brown and bronze ensemble. I’m hoping someone tops that this Christmas. I really can’t have enough hats and scarves that match. LOL.
What’s your favorite Christmas dish?
I have favorite holiday foods like cornbread dressing, yams and really-really-well-made potato salad. I can eat these on Christmas, New Years, Easter, Thanksgiving… pretty much any holiday.
It’s Christmas Eve and we saw you kissing Santa Claus…describe what your ‘Santa Baby’ looks like.
My Santa Baby looks like Idris Elba. LOL. Tall, chocolate and hella hot! But if my husband is reading this, he looks just like you, baby! Just like you!
Think about the five most important people in your life. Assuming you can only give intangible gifts, what would you give each of them and why?
My Mother, Donna Pough: All the happiness her heart can hold
My husband, Cedric Bolton: The success his hard work and drive demands
My sister, Jennifer Pough: strength and wellness for her and her family
My new nephew, Michael Isaiah Pough: strength and courage for his life as a black man-child in the promise land
The baby girls—My sisters, Sandy, Michelle and Tasheenia: The complete realization of all their many talents and the fulfillment of all their desires
What’s the best thing about Christmas?
The best thing is that for a moment we all have hope and peace and joy and we want to share it with those around us. That’s the best thing about Christmas, the sharing and the good will towards others.
Complete the phrases…
It doesn’t feel like Christmas unless I’m with family.
Happiness is always on my Christmas list.
My Christmas traditions include lots of R&B holiday CDs and sing alongs.
Habitat For Humanity is one charity that I recommend others donate to during the holidays (and all year-round).
And because APOOO is a book club…and we need to talk about books before we leave…please answer the following questions:
Excluding books written by you, what five books are you recommending to others as Christmas gifts this year?
A Woman’s Worth, Tracy Price-Thompson
Red Light Special, Risqué
Orange Mint and Honey, Carleen Brice
Better Than, Leslie Esdaile
The Critic, Dyanne Davis
What was the last book you read that:
made you scream? Red Light Special by Risqué (at least it made me holla in a good way…)
made you cry? A Woman’s Worth by Tracy Price-Thompson
made you laugh? The Ex-Factor, Tu-Shonda L. Whitaker
made you use all five senses? Tender Secrets, Ann Christopher
was in a genre you don’t normally read? Retaliation by Yasmin Shiraz
used location as a character? A Street Girl Named Desire by Treasure E. Blue (the streets are definitely a brutal character in this book)
wish you had written? A Sexy Time of It by Cara Summers
you couldn’t wait to tell someone else about? Guarding His Body by A. C. Arthur
Gwyneth, thanks so much for spending time with APOOO and may this holiday season be joyous, prosperous, warm and spent with those you love the most!
xoxo
Thanks so much for having me, Yasmin! You and the women of APOOO rock! And I hope you all have wonderful Christmases and very Happy New Years…
