Rachelle and Raheem Martin have been living under a cloud since the death of their mother 15 years ago. Rachelle takes on the role of mother, sister, caregiver, and friend to her twin and everyone. She blames herself for the sudden death of her mother and she tries to put on a happy front for all around her. Raheem, who sought counseling after his mother’s death, masks his fears and he becomes the protector of Rachelle. When Rachelle’s father asks her to sing in a holiday pageant, and Raheem falls in lust for a girl that was deemed unfit for him, Rachelle begins to see things differently. Her transformation has an effect on everyone around her. Jennifer Coissiere’s debut novel, Crossing Over, shows readers how one simple gesture can be breathtaking.

Coissiere’s novel deals with pain, grief, secrets, dependency, fear, love and family. The characters will have you talking out loud as they try to understand the decision they have made and the impact it has on others around them. It was easy for me to identify with the characters and the situations they faced. I enjoyed this book and I would recommend to everyone.
