Miley Toussaint found herself moving from place-to-place, and by the time she was 12-years old, she just wanted to settle down with her mother and little brother, Huey. It seemed no matter where she lived, she never fit in with other kids her age, and never would in Brandi Worley’s Crumb Snatchers.

In spite of her troubles, Miley found joy in spending time with her grandfather, Paw-Paw, her little brother, Huey, and reading books. These were the times Miley enjoyed most, because it seemed no one liked her and always questioned the color of her skin, eyes and hair. It did not help that her mother was poor, and her father was more absent than present; and when he was, he was so mean, Miley called him “Warden” in her head, of course.

It was bad enough that Miley was picked out to be picked on, but she found herself caught up with the wrong girls from school, along with a few teachers who did not care too much for her either. While trying to find out who she is, Miley always referred to her home-training, especially from her grandfather, constantly reminding herself what is right or wrong. It was this same training that Miley relied on when she found out about planned illegal activities that she felt she had to do something about.

Would Miley find out that she does not have to fit in, or will she go along with the Crumb Snatchers and disregard all that she knew, giving up the chance to prove to herself that she does not have to fit in?

I found Crumb Snatchers, a book written for juniors aged nine to 12-years old, to be very inviting to the eyes because of the cover and beautiful illustrations in the book; however, the story was a little halting for me to read, but the thrust of the message of the book was evident. I recommend this book to those who enjoy coming-of-age novels.
