Thanks Dad! by Rambling Raven
This year Father’s Day had more meaning to me than previous years. My dad, is currently recovering from a second stroke. The strokes have damaged some of his ability to communicate. It is frustrating for him and equally so for the rest of the family. My dad was a talkative fellow before the strokes, now he is very quiet and struggles with finding the correct words to use. Recovery has been slow for my dad and the concern of another stroke is forever present. Hopefully, through diet, exercise and medication we can avoid more strokes.
It is such a surreal event to sit and watch the very person who took care of you all your life reduced to someone who now needs looking after himself. It is as if someone took Superman’s cape from him. Through it all, I have become much more reflective on my relationship with my dad in recent months. I realize there are so many things I need to thank him for.
Thanks, Dad for helping to give me life.
Thanks, Dad for always being there when so many other fathers were not for their children.
Thanks, Dad for showing my sisters and I that a real man is one who put love of God, and family above all others.
Thanks, Dad for being my protector when knuckleheads came around trying to grab my attention.
Thanks, Dad for teaching me that a man should never display his fists or ugly words to a woman.
Thanks, Dad for allowing me to step out on my own but also making sure that I had a safety net in case I should fall.
Thanks, Dad for being my loudest cheerleader.
Thanks, Dad for being on my side at times when I had to face mom.
Thanks, Dad for being a team player with mom when she needed your support in raising us.
Thanks, Dad for being a shoulder to cry on when I need one.
Thanks, Dad for never being shy in saying I love you and showing us how much you do.
Thanks, Dad for sharing a love of horror and Clint Eastwood movies with me.
Thanks, Dad for talking to me instead of at me.
Thanks, Dad for being the family historian and photographer.
Thanks, Dad for always being handy with your tool belt.
Above all, thanks for being the quiet strength that our family could not endure without.
Love you always!!

Raven,
This is a beautiful tribute to your dad. I can say he is truly loved. I know they say that a mother is the glue that holds a family together, but I believe alot of the times it is our fathers that teaches us strength, not to give up, and provides support in any way possibe. A father sets examples and it is obvious that your father did a wonderful job.
Awesome tribute to your father, Raven.
Awesome tribute to your dad, Raven! My dad is in the hospital right now, and this was the first Father’s Day, we didn’t go out to dinner, but my brother and I brought our cards and gifts to the hospital and spent the day with him there! He’s a great man, and like you, our family is blessed to have him here, despite the health challenges!
I have tears in my eyes. I know you cannot wait when he can read and comprehend this beautiful tribute to him. Only a woman who has known a father such as this can write something like this. I know personally.
Awesome!!!
