Eugenia O’Neal brings readers an interesting and adventurous tale in Dido’s Prize.  Dido had only one thing on her mind, as she traveled along King’s Street in Jamaica. She wanted to earn enough money to free her family from Massa Neville’s sugar plantation. But two unforeseeable events robbed her of her fortune. Feeling defeated but not without hope, Dido decided to run way. Based on a chance meeting with a pirate, El Negro, Dido decided to disguise herself and seek her fortune on a pirate’s ship.  Yet, as fate would have it, she also did not foresee herself falling in love with the handsome El Negro.

I looked forwarded to reading my first adventure with pirates at sea.  O’Neal gave simple descriptions of life at sea and the ways of a pirate.  However, the story was told with little excitement and enthusiasm and it did not fully captivate me.  O’Neal discussed the voyages, the battles, and the adventures but she did not discuss a lot of the history, which is needed to make a wonderful historical novel.  She also did not devote a lot to the romance between the main characters.  Their relationship was not acknowledged until the last third of the book.  All in all, with a little work, this would be a wonderful tale of adventure on the sea and the quest for freedom that was sought by those captured illegally.   I would consider this an adventure story and not a romance.
