Vintage E Lynn Harris
Reading In My Father’s House by E Lynn Harris was reminiscent of the book that introduced me to his work, Just As I Am. It was 1993, and I recall walking into the book store in Millilani, Hawaii, looking for a good book to read. I was so happy to see that book openly displayed. After reading the back, I was a bit taken aback by the subject matter, but it did not stop me from purchasing the book. Four hours later I was a die-hard E Lynn Harris fan. In My Father’s House is an homage to his early books.
Bentley L. Dean III, gave up his father, girlfriend and inheritance to live his life as an openly gay man. Once disowned by his father and jilted by his lover, he moves to Miami and opens a successful modeling agency. For years he has done well, but, on the eve of the 2009 presidential election his business is struggling to stay afloat. However, a man comes to his agency and offers a deal he cannot refuse. The mystery man needs to hire several models who are gay-friendly and will sign a non-disclosure notice. Bentley feels as though the offer is too good to be true, but his desperation leads him to make a deal that can turn out to be a deal with the devil.
In My Father’s House is filled with vivid descriptions of male sexuality and lush living conditions that are trademarks of Mr. Harris’ work. However, there is also an element of mystery and intrigue that keeps the reader flipping the pages and interested in what is going to happen next. I completely enjoyed the fast-pace, entertaining novel of Mr. Harris’ second posthumous novel and recommend it to all who love contemporary, sexy fiction, particularly, E Lynn Harris fans.
