I think it’s important to find an agent who DOES get forms of African American literature. Just like with an editor, you want to connect with someone who has experience with your genre so that from the start, the two of you are on the same page. So, when looking for a lit agent, definitely look for someone who has experience with your genre, who has a track record of successfully negotiating deals for writers within your genre.

Very informative and helpful site! I’d like to reach out to an editor for my novel. Also, do you find that there are some lit agents who don’t “get” some forms of African American literature?

C.M. – it depends. I know of some editors who charge between $2 – $3 per page for editing. I know of some who charge over $4 per page. It’s important to do research on several editors and where is possible, get a sample edit done so that you can see exactly what an editor DOES for the money he or she charges.

like the way you broke it down and explain what to expect from your editor. I think people either overestimate what is expected from a editor or underestimate the need of a editor. Great Info Shon.
