Get’cha Head In The Game by Djuanna Brockington

648107_-chalkboard_basketballLast week, The Girl was in her school’s production(seven performances to be exact) of High School Musical. Somehow, I have actually managed to avoid seeing this movie, as well as its sequels.  Yay me.

What does that have to do with my post title, you ask?

Well, the title of this post is the name of one of the songs from the show.  It’s actually a catchy tune, and has been in my head all week.

Usually, that’s a bad thing.  But this week, it’s more like a mantra.

I have got to get my head back in the writing game.

It’s so easy to get side-tracked by life.  You get caught up in the “doing” of stuff.  The “doing” creeps into your life like kudzu.  It starts out small, but before you know it, it’s crushing the life out of you. And it doesn’t need a lot of time to do it.  A couple of weeks off your game, and you look up wondering WTF?

I’m supposed to be finishing my manifesto (more about that another time).

I’m supposed to be midway through my novel.

Except I’m not.

My head hasn’t been in the game.  I’ve been busy “doing”, but not anything to move me towards my goals.  I’ve been spending my down time (what little there is of it) in front of the television because it’s easy and mindless.  And the TV watching hasn’t been all bad.  Actually, when the writing is good, it reminds me what I am supposed to be doing.

I’m not really complaining.  OK.  Maybe I am.  Actually, it’s more like whining.

But, even I can only whine for so long.

It soon began to make sense why that song has been in my head all week.  It’s reminding me of what I am supposed to be doing.

So, slowly, I’m getting my head right, and getting back on track.  This won’t be my most productive week ever, but so what.  Life happens.

What do you do to get your head back in the game?

  1. I struggle just as much as you do with staying on track. Currently, starting today for the month of May, I am doing a 1000 words a day challenge. These words I’m dedicating to my current work in progress.

  2. I usually do what I have done for the past couple months…go underground, do only what I have to and need to do, then come out swinging…

    Blessings!

  3. I took a “Book in a Week” class; it was like drinking coffee laced with No-Doze; or in today’s frame of reference, I should say Red Bull (lol)

  4. I actually need to come up with something new. I have tried buying new supplies, reorganizing…nothing works. In the past all I had to do was re-read my goals page of my journal and I would be off to a great start. That is with my writing.

Now for the gym, I just take a good look in the mirror and I have no desire to slack there anymore. I am really proud of myself for that.

  5. @JC- girl, I said I was going to do 1k words a day this month as well. Except I think I’ll start on Monday. As you can see, procrastination is still an issue for me. LOL

@Angelia- I like “come out swinging”. I need to try that.

@Niambi- where in did you sign up for your class? I need to check that out. Seriously.

@Lashonda- I think the only thing that has kept me from going postal is the exercising.

  6. Speak! You said it loud and clear. This could have been me writing this.

  7. To get my head back in the game with writing, one of four things work:

I stop brainstroming and write to produce content. Or, Stop ruminating and make a decision. Or, I talk through it out loud to someone who would understand—even if it’s only to myself. And when all else fails, I mention it to my husband. Who always, in his nonsense, straight-forward, bottom- line-up-front approach says: Just do it! Then, I accept the challenge and git ‘er done.

  8. of course that should have been no-nonsense
