Gifting Yourself by Djuanna Brockington

During the holidays, we focus on everyone else (what we do the rest of the year, just multiplied by 10).  We often forget to gift ourselves.  And I’m not talking about the Guccis, the gadgets, or the gold.  Some of us do plenty of that during the year as well.

I’m talking about gifting ourselves with things we don’t get much of:  time to read, time with friends, a moment of solitude.

When was the last time you went to the movies “with yourself”?  It’s one of my favorite things to do.  No arguments about what to see, you get there in time to get popcorn AND catch the previews.  You sit up close, smack dab in the middle, or WAAAYYY back because that is where you want to sit.  And you enjoy the movie in peace.

Movies not your thing?  How about wandering aimlessly through your favorite book haunt for a couple of hours?  Barnes and Noble, Borders, the library?  Where ever you get your fix.

Ohh- how about people watching in Starbucks?  I just love to sit and listen to what other people order.  Half the time I can’t figure out how the baristas keep it straight.  Starbucks ordering is a language of it’s own.

Anybody up for baking?  I enjoy baking during the holidays.  Not that “we’ve got 50 folks in the house and we’ve got to make sure there is enough dessert” baking.  I’m talking about “a couple of dozen cookies fresh out of the oven for the Diva in Training that she can burn her fingers on ‘cause she’s being greedy and doesn’t want to wait for them to cool off “ kind of baking.  Seeing her happiness for something simple is a gift to me.

How about a gift of afternoon delight for you and your loved one.  You know, when you make that call- “clear your schedule and meet me at the house for lunch”.  Uh huh!  Say it the right way, and he’ll hang up and head out the door before you can get lunch out good.  The gift that keeps on giving.  Hmmm.  I’m making a call as soon as this post is done.

These things keep you going.

What ways do you feed your spirit or “gift” yourself during the holidays?

  1. I don’t really ever take the time for myself. I usually try to attend a book club discussion where I don’t have to hear Mommy or Baby. I am free to be all about self. I am aiming to attend the December meeting; which means I need to get started reading the book so I have a couple of weeks to get through it all with the rest of my every day life happenings.

Earlier this week I took a long hot shower, came out and sat in a soothing hot bath with a book and silence for 15 minutes.

  2. Since my children are now grown, I tend to gift myself a lot…time to read, to be, to nap…I used to feel guilty when I took me time, but as did many things change, once I turned fifty, I knew ME was as important as they….great post…

  3. Great Post… I am still trying to find me time… it usually comes at 1 -2 am when all is quiet and I can think .. I just want to be able to do that more at normal hours without depriving myself of sleep.

  4. I have vowed to go to a movie alone. I think I will try that this weekend. I do close my room door and read. Or I will go to Borders, Michaels, Target, Linens and Things or Bed Bath and Beyond and just stroll. My husband never understands this. The other night, my sister called me from the grocery store. She said she ran away from her family to the grocery store and was just walking up and down the each aisles.

  5. What an interesting concept…going to a movie I actually want to see.

Why didn’t I think of that?

I’ve been on so many side-splittingy horrible/funny dates which sometimes included movies…I decided that movies were bad.
