One Goal Per Month by Rambling Raven
I was recently told by a wonderfully vibrant 65 year old that if you can do something for 30 days straight it will become a habit. The statement intrigued me so much that I am willing to give it a try. Could it really be that simple, if I stick to something for 30 days straight it will become nearly effortless, like second nature? What a wonderful concept, especially for this time of the year.
A new year brings a sense of renewal. It’s a chance to start over. We give ourselves new goals to conquer and renewed hope to resolve old ones. Even if you are against resolutions, you have to admit that around January 1, you start to think of things you would like to accomplish within the next 12 months.
My resolution this year was not to make any. What’s the point? By the end of January, I have either forgotten what I said I was going to do or failed miserably at doing it. However, after careful consideration I have decided to tackle one goal per month in place of a traditional resolution list. For example, I am horrible when it comes to being prompt. If I have to be somewhere by 8:00 a.m. you can bet a paycheck that I will arrive at 8:05 or later. I try and I try but somehow I always end up late, no matter what. Every year one of my resolutions would be to arrive on time to all appointments and events. I would start off great for a few days, but as soon as I fell off the wagon I would throw that resolution out the window, and considered it a failed one.
Well, this month, instead of lumping being on time with eating healthier, exercising more, and blah, blah, blah I am just going to focus on being prompt. Hopefully, by the end of the month arriving on time will become second nature. If all goes well I can move on to the next goal, therefore making the beginning of each month a sort of “new year” for each goal I am trying to conquer. If at the end of the 30 days I have not mastered being on time I can either try again or chose to move on to the next goal. No matter what, after the third month if I don’t have being prompt down pact then it wasn’t meant to be. I will then accept the fact that I have serious issues with time.
So, what goal would you like to achieve? Do you want to try the one month challenge along with me? Just think, if you can eat one healthy meal per day for one month by the end of that month you may actually be a little healthier, thinner and perhaps developed a habit that you can live with. I think it’s worth a shot.

My goal for the month is to write ten chapters of a novel I’m working on. I like that philosophy that if you can do something for 30 days straight it will become a habit. I will definitely keep this in mind…
@ SD good luck!
I stop resolutions and make life goals that I check on each month. I am working on all of the goals I set this month, but I say I will concentrate on my healthy goal by exercising at least 30 (hoping for 60minutes) a day. I was on a roll until popwarner took over my life this July.
My goal is to leave work on time every day this month. I’ve got to learn to leave work on time.
I don’t have any resolutions but I would like to work out more. At least 3 times a week. I will think of a goal that I can do for 30 days
I have given up on resolutions a very long time ago. They only last as long as my memory allows them to. However, my goal for this year is to try to write another novel in completion; which means that I need to write at least an hour every day. I do everything else before I get to my writing and by the time I do, I’m so tired I can’t bother to think.
My gold for this year is to finish this book so even if it’s one word, Im going to try the 30 day thing. Thanks !
I don’t do resolutions either because I’m a work in progress…but I do set monthly goals…so I decided to try a monthly goal that just maybe can start something new and become a new reality.
This is great. Now that sounds like a plan I can live with.
