Thank God It’s a Book Giveaway, Stand the Storm by Breena Clarke (Day 7)

As many of us prepare for Thanksgiving Day (and dinner), may we take time to pause and read a good book.  Today’s giveaway comes on the heel of the following commentary from APOOO member, Dera Williams.

I wonder if Nanny’s relationship was indicative of mothers who lived through slavery. She and Gabriel were connected at the hip. I thought it interesting that the oldest grandchild didn’t want to be under the grandmother’s thumb and that the male child was deferred to.
What I liked. The day-to-day activities of freed blacks in Washington D.C. The telling of the occupations, the tailor, laundry business and just how folks lived. Althought, It was depressing to read about some of the squalor, like the rats running through town, it didn’t keep me from finishing the book…or enjoying it. It was good historical fiction. Rating 4.5

I must admit that the cover of Stand the Storm is one of my favorite, if not favorite, book covers for 2008, lol.  But, a book is about so much more than the cover, it’s what’s between the pages that makes for a good story.  If you enjoy historical fiction or know someone who does, I recommend you get a copy of Stand the Storm by Breena Clarke. If you still need more reasons, for picking up a copy, CLICK HERE to read APOOO’s review by team member Phyllis Rhodes.

And don’t forget to enter to win.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

(All are about Breena Clarke)

How many of you had heard of Breena Clarke before today?

Have you read any books by Breena Clarke?

Her first book, River, Cross My Heart, was Oprah Book Club Selection.  If you read it, did it live up to the hype for you and did you recommend it to others?

If you could have dinner with Clarke, what questions would you ask her?

  3. I meant to say its hard for me to read about slavery but will read if the author has a different take on it than what Ive read up to now.

I did not live up to the hype for me. It’s been awhile, but I remember it being slow and not very interesting.

If you could have dinner with Clarke, what questions would you ask her
I would ask her, Given what it seems like the publishers want or expect from AfAm authors, would you write a book of erotica or street/urban fiction content?

Her first book, River, Cross My Heart, was Oprah Book Club Selection. If you read it, did it live up to the hype for you and did you recommend it to others? I didn’t read it, but I love that Oprah picks intelligent books that make you think.

If you could have dinner with Clarke, what questions would you ask her? I’d ask, did you “lobby” to get picked by Oprah? What did it do to your sales? Do you think historical fiction should be read along with non-fiction of the same period?

  7. I have not read any books by Breena Clarke and had not heard of her before now. I have however added her to my to be read list and will acquire (some of) her books. I was referred by ‘Cilla, Bookmanic40.

If you could have dinner with Clarke, what questions would you ask her? I would wonder what was it about the error that caused her to write about it.

  9. I’ve been eyeing this novel in the Black Expressions catalog.
I’ve never read this author before.
