Thank God for a Book, You Gotta Sin to Get Saved by J.D.Mason (Day 5)

Since she came on the scene, almost eight years ago, with her debut title, And on the Eighth Day She Rested, J. D. Mason has been one of my favorite authors.  She is a very talented writer, as well as one who is able to write outside the box. I’ve read all of Mason’s books and   loved every one that she has written…except for one.  And, even that one was still a good read.

I’m not fond of prequels or sequels.  I was suspect of reading Mason’s latest release, You Gotta Sin to Get Saved, because very rarely are sequels better then the previous storyline.  I enjoyed reading about Reesy, Connie and Charlotte and became engrossed in their stories in One Day I Saw a Black King.  I was satisfied with the ending and didn’t need a sequel.

But, members of APOOO book club read and talked it up, it was nominated as a BOM, and selected as a  book club read earlier this year.  I was still slightly hesitant, but gave it a chance anyway.  I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised and happy that I decided to read it.

In You Gotta Sin In You Gotta Sin to Get Saved, Mason brings back the sisters and mother from One Day I Saw a Black King, as well as King and several new characters. Issues of abandonment, unwanted pregnancies, sisterhood, parenthood and a few secrets were shared.

If you enjoy mother/daughter storylines, definitely check out You Gotta Sin to Get Saved by J. D. Mason. CLICK HERE to read Jeanette’s review.

  1. Ok .. I have never read a book by Mason.. I checked amazon for previous titles and I haven’t read any .. I gotta get to the ball… :-)

  2. This would be a new author to me and you’ve sold me that she’s worth reading! Thanks for the chance to win!

  3. I’ve read a few books by JD Mason and have enjoyed them all, some more than others. :-) I think my favorite is On the Eigth Day She Rested. I can’t pinpoint why but I remember the book pretty vivdly versus her other books I read.

Reesy, Connie and Charlotte must be in the new book that I haven’t read. :-)

I would ask JD about her writing style and how it has appeared to change. Has she changed to suit publsher requests or has she always wanted to delve into the “drama” type books? Also, I would ask which book did she enjoy writing the most.

Not sure what I’d do or my club would do to keep her entertained. She appears to be laid back but maybe not.

  4. Have you read any books by J. D. Mason? I’ve read AND ON THE EIGHTH DAY SHE RESTED, ONE DAY I SAW A BLACK KING, and DON’T WANT NO SUGAR.

If so, what are some of your favorite reads? ONE DAY I SAW A BLACK KING.

What do you think of the sisters, Reesy and Connie, and their mother, Charlotte? It’s been so long, can’t really remember.

If you could have dinner with Mason, what questions would you ask her? Is there anything she would have done differently in her literary journey?
