Terry McMillan follows up with the lovely ladies of WAITING TO EXHALE, Bernadine, Savannah, Robin and Gloria, in GETTING TO HAPPY. They are now either in their 50s or quickly approaching 50. We all thought they had found that special place, but we see in GETTING TO HAPPY that they are still trying to get there. Bernadine is coming out of her second marriage and trying to cope with depression. Savannah is trying to decide if she even wants to stay married. Robin has not found anyone yet, but has her 15 year-old daughter, Sparrow, hounding her about going out on dates. Gloria is madly in love with her husband, Marvin, and seems to be the only one happy with their relationship. Tragedy, however, has all of their names written down on a list, and begins to cross them off one-by-one.
McMillan says it best in her forward; exhaling is only a temporary state. These ladies now have to breathe. If you thought they went off into the sunset and lived happily ever after you will be sorely disappointed. But, if you know that life sometimes has ups and downs, and the same may go for characters, then you need to pick this one up. I recommend it for those fans for WAITING TO EXHALE.
