High Stakes by Toshia Shaw, gives us a little peek into the life of women working the Las Vegas strip. Shauna and Felicia have had each other’s back since they met while dancing at the Gold Room. Dawn used to work there as well, but has been MIA since she met her fiancĂ©, Jeffrey. Dawn does not want him to know anything about her past life. She was only doing it to make money for college. Now that she has this sophisticated and wealthy man, there is no need for that life…or her friends. She will stop at nothing to make sure that Jeffrey marries her and knows nothing of her real life.
Shauna has her own drama going on. Her boyfriend/baby’s daddy is physically, sexually, and emotionally abusive. She wants to leave him, but cannot find the courage to move on. Felicia is a go getter and is not worried about anything but making her money. All is well until one of her “clients” gets her to do something she has vowed never to do. Will these women risk it all for happiness?
Shaw creates a staggering story of prostitution, drugs, lies, and abuse. I enjoyed stepping away from reality and going into their worlds for a while. Some moments were a little racy. I was not quite prepared for a particular detailed sex scene. But other than that the plot was well-written and it all tied together to be a great story.
