Hooker Pumps: Are They Really Necessary by Djuanna Brockington

I already know that I will be stepping on a few toes (pun intended) with my blog today. As part of my mid-life crisis revolution, I have decided to take a stand for my feet. (Seriously, I am cracking myself up here. Please bear with me.) Like many women, I loves me some shoes. But, I have a bit of a problem. You see, I refuse to wear things that: 1) don’t fit well, 2) don’t look cute on me (or make me think I look cute), or 3) aren’t comfortable, all in the name of fashion. Yay me!
Once I started working from home, the uncomfortable shoes were the first to go. And I didn’t realize how uncomfortable they were until I stopped wearing them everyday, and then had to put them on for meetings and trainings here and there. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a great looking shoe. But these days, a shoe has to feel good as well as look good. Good looking shoes that hurt have no business on my feet. But good looking, sexy, and comfortable shoes are also hard to come by.
Heels are getting higher and higher with each passing day. It used to be that 3 inches was good for a high heel, and anything over 4 inches was considered a hooker pump (I’m keeping it clean, but ya’ll know what we really call them). These days, 3 inches is considered a mid-heel. WTF? Thanks to Sex and the City, a woman can openly express her love affair with shoes, while limping to her podiatrist. I’m just saying.
So, I took an informal poll of my friends this morning to find out why they wear high heels. Tenelle got all dreaming sounding (as if she had just taken a psychedelic drug a moment prior) and declared that they are pretty. So, then I asked if she wears them for men or for women. She was adamant about not giving a flip (not her word) about wearing them for men. She loves, loves, love high heels (the higher the better- 4 or 5 inches, no problem). She feels that she is short, and she likes the extra height they give her. Now, let me give you guys a little background info. Tenelle is about 5’7” with a coca cola bottle shape. Hate her. But she’s my friend. What can you do? And she likes the height- says the woman who has three inches on me in her bare feet. UGH! Next subject.
I then spoke with Chanda, and she said that she likes heels because they make her feel sexy, but since the current man in her life is her height, she can now be comfortable out and about in her flats. Chanda readily admitted that after about an hour in high heels, she was pretty much done. She is secretly enjoying wearing flats more these days, but her new man likes women in heels, so she won’t toss hers.
Now me, I love the way my legs look in heels. My legs are an asset and I try to show them off whenever I can (weather permitting). But when my feet hurt, my whole body hurts, and I can’t think about anything but getting those shoes off my feet and my toes free. When I’m in a heel over three inches, it feels like I’m tiptoeing all day- and that is neither fun nor cute. If the freakin’ models are falling down on the runway in them, what do you think is going to happen to Jane Doe on the street? I mean really. So what is a good compromise? I say keep your 4 inch heels for when you really need them- in the bedroom. Hopefully, they’ll spend more time in the air than on the floor.

I am so with you on this one, I know what works for me, what highlights my best ass-ets and what makes me feel cute, but I absolutely REFUSE, to be uncomfortable, bound up or a slave to anything…including cutesness…thanks!

ALRIGHT Sis! I am with you there.
I have to say at 5′2″ I love my heels to be high…now…putting on weight has not allowed me to wear them because my knees scream in pain. I hope once I am done with my weight goals I can get back into my heels. My limit is 4″. My husband is 6′ so he towers over me. I wear my heels because I LOVE them…I can now appreciate a good flip flop and since that is the official shoe of Florida I get away with wearing them from time to time. however the Jersey in me loves my Timberlands……
I agree with you. If I go to a party in heels I ALWAYS have flats in my bag LOL I can only be cute for a little while
I don’t own many heels because I like my shoes to be comfortable.
Girl, you are crazy. I love me some high heels and for many of the same reasons mentioned and as you to enhance my pretty legs.
And I too, as my daughter, carry a pair of flats cause after two hours, my dogs are crying.
Yeah, 3 inch is no longer the norm but I refuse to wear those elevator shoes, those 5 inch shoes even to look cute. I know I am going to have to give up the higher heels eventually but until then…. What we women go through. Vanity, vanity.
Dera’s last blog post..I’ve Been Tagged
I love me some heels but they don’t love my feet…my ankles be screaming after an hour in them.
Lately I have been wearing low heels (maybe two inches no more then three) and wedge heels…I also keep flats in my car (just in case)
The Fall is here (Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa) so I’ll soon be able to wear my boots…most of them have three inch stack heels but they look so good with my jeans/skirts/dresses.
