First loves, new loves are filled with many first and getting to know you moments. And what better time to get to know someone than doing the summer, when school is out and you can stay up all night talking on the phone texting each other, hanging out at each other’s home, and if you get lucky knockin’ boots without getting caught. QQ. But, as with anything done in the dark, there can be consequences. Back in my day, hmmm like 30 years ago, it was an unexpected/unwanted pregnancy. Today, pregnancy out of wedlock is not as taboo as it once was for many. Life is no longer necessarily altered because of an unplanned pregnancy.
Another consequence was getting VD an STD…but usually a trip to the free clinic and penicillin could cure whatever ailed you. Today…there are diseases running rampant in our community which antibiotics cannot get rid of and that can disrupt your health and end your life prematurely. So it is with bittersweet emotions that I spotlight today’s book.
On the positive, Young, Beautiful and HIV Positive by Marvelyn Brown is a story that needs to be told. But, the mother in me, makes me so angry, upset and very sad that another young sister is HIV positive. I personally know several young women, between the ages of 19-25, who are HIV positive because of their boyfriends. These young ladies thought they were in monogamous relationships and this is how the ‘love’ of their lives repaid them…with a disease that can have deadly consequences. It just MAKES ME WANNA HOLLA and kick some mother’s son’s behind!
Folks we have got to wake up and educate our kids about protecting themselves. If our children are sexually active and our dependents, we need to DEMAND that our daughters and sons use condoms. We need to stop sticking our heads in the sand and believing that our kids are not having sex because we told them not to. Hmmm…the high pregnancy rate tells us otherwise. But, today it is not enough to just SAY NO…folks needs to be prepared for battle and have all the ammunition they can get!
I am proud of Marvelyn for sharing her story and I wish her a long life without serious complications…and recommend that every parent, teen, concerned adult secure a copy of this book and read it with their young loved ones…because a mind is a terrible thing to waste and ignorance is no excuse today.
