Sometimes God has to do something drastic to get our attention away from whatever it is that is keeping us away from his grace and mercy. After all is said and done, when and if we survive it all, we get a chance to stand up in front of others to give our testimony. In Joy Comes in the Mourning by Korika L. Johnson, Tonya Monroe and her aunt, Carolyn Wright, have to go through the fire in order to come back and stand before God as his humble servants.

When Tonya was 14, her mother died in a tragic car accident. On that day she lost more than just her mother, she lost her father and a little of her faith. Over the years, she pushed her true feelings deep down into her subconscious, until slowly but surely those feelings began eating her up from the inside out. When Tonya goes from a perfectly healthy 30 year-old to a gravely ill woman, she realizes it is time to call on the Lord. Even though she is calling on him things are not getting better. What is she not doing right?

Carolyn does not know how to say no to anyone. When the church calls she goes running. She is tired, but does not want to let anyone down. While she does all that is asked of her, she does it with tension in her spirit. When all her good intentions smack her in the face, the shock is almost too much for her to handle. Will Carolyn continue to worship God the way she has? Or will she finally give up her religion and return to her old ways?

Having a testimony is a good thing. When we are going through the trials and tribulations to get to where we can testify it is not so pleasing. But if it was not difficult, we would not be able to see the miracles that God is constantly bestowing upon our lives. Johnson touched on faith and forgiveness in Joy Comes in the Mourning. We sometimes have to mourn the loss of certain relationships in order to move forward in a positive manner. I enjoyed reading this story, but there was a lot of preaching that could have been left out. However, I recommend this book to readers of Christian fiction.
