Kimberla Lawson Roby introduces us to, Alicia Black, Reverend Curtis Black’s daughter in THE BEST OF EVERYTHING. Alicia has graduated college and, after a short romance, is about to marry Phillip Sullivan, the Reverend’s associate minister. Life for Daddy’s little girl is about to drastically change. Alicia loves to shop and wants the finer things in life. Her father made sure that happened. Now that she is a married woman, she can no longer depend on her father. Phillip makes it clear that her spending it out of control and she must scale back. After just six months of marriage, they both start to question if they really made the right decision.

Nothing will stop Alicia from satisfying her craving for shopping. We soon see that she has a shopping addiction. Even during tragedy, Alicia cannot stay out of the mall. Her lies, deceit, and debt may be the end of their short marriage. Will Alicia realize the impact that her debt will put on her marriage? Will Phillip forgive her for all the lies? Will their marriage survive Alicia wanting the best of everything?

Roby does an excellent job taking readers into the mind of both Alicia and Phillip. You soon see that the apple does not fall far from the tree. You want the best for them and you also want Alicia to get help. There was a great mix of drama and, of course, Black family scandal. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the next installment. I recommend this for Roby fans, who enjoy a plot-driven storyline filled with lots of drama; they will not be disappointed.

  1. Kimberla: enough with the Black family already! Can’t this woman think of anything new??

  2. I’m looking forward to reading this book. I can’t wait for me to get caught up on my work so I can get back to reading.

Shelia´s last blog post..Blogging Housewife is the Next Stop on Invisible Love Tour

  3. My copy came today. I have two books ahead of it. Hopefully I will get to the beginning of the week.

  4. As a fan of Roy’s, I was disappointed in this latest installment of the Black saga. Alicia, who was raised by a very grounded and sensible mother and step-father, seemingly developed a shopping addicition overnight. And I might add, very little imput from Tanya. There were hints here and there……the conversation about his and Tanya’s marriage and her outburst at the end. But no defining reason. Roby could have easily used Alicia’s rape, as a very solid reason, why Tanya just allowed her child to get away with murder all of a sudden.

The same could be said with Alicia’s affair, she had his business card in one chapter and the next she was in bed with him trying to figure out how she was going to wean herself from him.

I think a break is needed from the black family. I would love to read a sequel from Changing Faces, or if another book on the Black family has to be written, I think that Tanya’s life needs to be explored move.

  5. Yvonne, Lawson Roby is an author I respect and admire, but like you, I was also disappointed with Best of Everything. There was a lot of drama…but not as much depth as I would have liked. Alicia and her shenanigans just wore me out and it was hard to empathize with her…sigh. I’m not sure of what is left to tell about the Black Family….I’m not giving up on Lawson Roby but I’m definitely ready for some new characters. ;)

  6. Great review and the comments have me wanting to read LOL
