List the FOUR BEST books that your book club has read this year.
The Sacred Place (Daniel Black), Hood (Noire), Little Black Girl Lost (Keith Lee Johnson), This Fire Down In My Soul (J. D. Mason)
List THREE books—the last book your club read, the current book your club is reading, the book your club plans to read next.
The complete series by Keith Lee Johnson
Sept. Little Black Girl Lost,
Oct. Little Black Girl Lost 2,
Nov. Little Black Girl Lost 3.
Offer TWO things to consider before starting a book club.
1. Know that you are a book club and not just a social club.
2. Everything is a group decision because we are more than a club we are a sisterhood. Dedication and commitment.
If your group could have dinner with ONE author, who would be your group’s choice and why?
We’ve had the liberty of having several authors join us already and welcome the opportunity to have more. But, if we had to say it would be Daniel Black (although we’ve met with him twice) he discusses his book as if he is reading it the first time himself, he is knowledgeable of what he has written, open to any and everything, and accepts constructive criticism well. Praises to Daniel Black!!!
GOTTA RUN…BUT BEFORE WE DEPART:
What makes your book club unique and different from any other book club? We are different due to our diverse backgrounds, journey of travels, and progress of success that each of us has made. Yet, we are humble enough to come together and learn from each other’s mistakes, weaknesses, and strengths as well as growth to make this journey of life and book club a successful one.
Is your group currently accepting membership?  If so, whom should we contact?
Yes, but we are not advertising open membership. It is a case by case situation as well as a process prior to joining. I (Tasha) can be reached at 404-668-5847 or at journeyofwomen@hotmail.com for further info.
How can one reach your group on the Web?  www.myspace.com/journeyofwomen
APOOO thanks Journey of Women for hanging out with us this weekend and we look forward to meeting each of you in cyber space via HEAD OF THE CLASS.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

APOOO wants to know if your book club read books beyond the African Diaspora?
If so, what was the last book your club read by a non-black author?
As an individual, do you read books beyond your ethnic group/culture?
If so, what was the last book you read.

  2. Hello JOW!!!! *** Hey Tasha*** ;-)

I’m so glad that you ladies are being featured over here at APOOO.

Seeing that you’ll are reading and enjoying Keith Lee Johnson, I would definitely recommend you’ll adding his other novels as well; Pretenses, Sugar and Spice, Faith’s Redemption, The Honeymoon Is Over and Hell Has No Fury. In these books you will find Johnnie Wise and her nephews all grown up.

  3. Hi Journey of Women bookclub,

Looks like you ladies were enjoyng a carribeanlike vacation on your picture.

I’ve read a few of Keith Lee Johnson books but have not read the Little Black Girl Lost series, I must pick them up one day.

Our bookclub has not gone beyone Africian Dispora. I once memtioned I was going ot pick a book by a white author and I was told “We are an AfAm bookclub”. On my own, I do read authors of other persuasions: Darryl Wimberly, Janet Evanovich, Mark Gimmeniz, Jane Green, Sophia Kinsella to name a few.

the last book I read by a non-AA author was Cupcake by Rachel Cohn.

  4. I read a lot of non-AA authors. The last book I read by a non-AA author was Voices in First Person Reflections on Latino Indentity; it’s a compilation of essays and short stories written by Latin American authors. I rated it a 4 because it was so good. Some of the stories I wanted them to be longer.

Currently I am reading The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I am loving it. I can see and feel the emotions of the characters. I cannot wait for the movie.
