OOSA Book Club
(Only One Stroke Away)
TAKES FIVE WITH APOOO
Location: Online
When Founded: January 2005
Number of Members: 11
Name FIVE genres that your book club reads regularly.
We read Christian, Contemporary, Erotica, Mystery and Street Literature on a regular basis, to name a few.
Name FIVE authors whose books your book club enjoys reading together. Just FIVE? There are so many authors whose work we enjoy. Well, to begin, Al-Saadiq Banks with his True 2 Life Series. He’s a phenomenal author. Darrin Lowery’s books always make for great group discussions and his latest, ‘Congratulations,’ was no exception. Keith Lee Johnson is another truly talented and gifted storyteller. Reign’s Dilemma Series is a must read. And anyone who is uncertain of who Storm is should check out, ‘Eva: First Lady.’
List the FOUR BEST books that your book club has read this year. Again with a number! If we must narrow it down then here it is, ‘Hell Razor Honeys’ by Eyone Williams, ‘The Game of Trife’ by Moses Miller, ‘Love, Lust and A Whole Lotta Distrust’ by DeiIra Smith-Collard and ‘Murder, and the connected novels Mayhem and A Fine Man/Death Deceit’ and ‘Some Smooth Jazz’ by Claudia Mair Burney.
List THREE books—the last book your club read, the current book your club is reading, the book your club plans to read next. –OOSA has read ‘Can I Get a Witness’ by ReShonda Tate Billingsley. We are currently reading ‘Gutter’ by K’wan. We’re planning on reading next ‘A Deal with Death’ by Endy.
Offer TWO things to consider before starting a book club. The first thing we believe is essential is to define what a book club actually is and what roles everyone will play. You’d be surprised at the many different concepts of what a book club is. And if everyone is on a different page, there will never be any harmony. The second essential is the level of commitment and participation that is needed in order to have a book club.
If your group could have dinner with ONE author, who would be your group’s choice and why? Just one author out of all of the authors we so enjoy reading? Okay, we’d say Mike Sanders. We picked Mike Sanders, author of ‘Hustlin’ Backwards,’ because across the board every one of us LOVED his book. It’s not often that we read a book as a whole and completely agree with the author, can’t get enough of that particular read and look forward to reading more from that author. Mike Sanders was probably one of the first authors who received a 5 star rating across the board.
GOTTA RUN…BUT BEFORE WE DEPART:
What makes your book club unique and different from any other book club? The most obvious we believe is that we read three books together as a group each month. Being for real avid readers, one book simply doesn’t satisfy the urge.
Is your group currently accepting membership? If so, whom should we contact?
Unfortunately, right now we are not accepting new members. HOWEVER, we do have reviewing opportunities as we are always looking for avid readers/reviewers. Those interested can contact us at: oosaonlinebookclub@yahoo.com.
How can one reach your group on the Web? Currently we’re in the remodeling stages, but please visit us at:
Email address: oosaonlinebookclub@yahoo.com
Website address: www.oosaonlinebookclub.com
Myspace: www.myspace.com/oosaonlinebookclub and www.myspace.com/oosacontinued.
Thank you for chatting with APOOO, please feel free to share any other information you would like readers/viewers to know about your group.
We are an online book club and reviewing team that focuses on African American authors. Our mission is to further promote African American literature by taking special interest in new and self published authors. We do, however, have a slight predilection for what some are labeling urban fiction. We hope to continue to read many, many books and discover more that will become our new favorites.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
OOSA mentioned that
Mike Sanders was probably one of the first authors who received a 5 star rating across the board.
APOOO calls any book that receives 4.5 or 5 stars a WOW book! What was the last WOW book for you individually and your group collectively?

Laaaaadiesssss Roll Call….
Real live, I must say that being apart of OOSA Online Book Club has been both, an honor as well as a privilege. Linked by books, OOSA grew. Not because anyone of us is looking for individual shine, but because we all have the same agenda; reading, reviewing and recommending.
Since APOOO began it’s ‘Head of The Class’ project, everyday I’ve come not only to meet other fantastic groups of readers, but to marvel in the fact that BOOKS have connected all of us. Who was it that said that we don’t read?
While I know that all of you should know who I am by now, I’ll reintroduce myself… My name is Crystal, but I’m also known by Nardsbaby. I have a serious reading addiction, and I am NOT seeking any assistance for that!!! I love my OOSA family! I take pride in the fact that we all enjoy reading, supporting authors and helping to spread the word on new books, especially new authors and self published authors.
Yasmin, I know you’re tired of hearing this, but this is BEAUTIFUL!!! And I’m happy to be apart of this.
SHOWING MAJOR BOOK CLUB LOVE!!

Let’s see. What was the last WOW read? As an individual I’ma have to say “NAN: The Game of Trife” by Moses Miller. Moses is in a league of his own. As a group, I would say either “Hell Razor Honeys” by Eyone Williams or that “Thug Politics” by Dutch.
Nardsbaby…I hear you and I love that your group is so excited about what you do. I too have no intentions of seeking assistance for my addiction. So what that I own 70 books in my TBR pile. They are my books and I will read each one of them.
Hey OOSA Book Club,
Congrats on your feature today on APOOO . Its a pleasure to meet more avid readers of the literary world. Much continued success in your endeavors.
Hey Nardsbaby!!!!!!
APOOO calls any book that receives 4.5 or 5 stars a WOW book! What was the last WOW book for you individually and your group collectively? Individually I have a few 4.5 – 5 star reads but I would say that “One Ain’t Enough” by Mo Flames is a WOW book. As a group, Reader’s Paradise Book Club would pick “What If It Feels Good” by DJ McLaurin, Michelle Larks “Crisis Mode”, “Ladies Night Out” by Electa Rome Parks.
Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, fam! My sisters in books! I am a card carrying, book toting member of OOSA and loving it. I like that we go beyond just reading by reviewing and recommending too. It’s what first attracted me to OOSA. The love, friendship and sisterhood doesn’t hurt either.
My last wow book is PLEASURE by Eric Jerome Dickey.
My last Wow book I read was Scorned by Nailah.
Hi Ladies…
congratualtions on the feature in APOOO. I love the name and the roll call
Happy reading
Hey OOSA,,,,,,
Much love and respect to my favorite book club. I wish you many more literary adventures and a long successful run like you’ve already had.

Oosa! Crystal, Ms. Toni, and the entire Oosa family, what’s the deal? Just stopped by to thank ya’ll for the major support ya’ll have been showing me since day one back in 2002. Yeah, 02, It’s been that long. I appreciate ya’ll. Keep doing what ya’ll do. As “WE KNOW” very Few In Life Are True 2 Life. Real Recognize Real, U heard?
I’m very impressed with the work you ladies have done. Since I am back in school I won’t be able to do the reading that I like to do but its absolutely great to know I can always count on my homegirl Crystal (big ups to Nardsbaby!) to recommend only the most elite books which saves me unimaginable amounts of aggravation from reading some of the garbage thats out there. Ladies I really applaud your work!
Hey Tange! Thanks for stopping by Hazel, Crystal, Angel, ‘Cilla, LaShonda, Chasity and Patricia . Anyone that hasn’t should check out “Bare Necessities: Sensuous Tales of Passion” by Hazel Mills. Good read.
*waving* Hey Al-Saadiq. Real do recognize real!!
Cool getting to know OOSA!
I just finished Hell Razor Honeys and I LOVE street lit, but this one didn’t do it for me. My last WOW read was Still Dirty by Vickie Stringer.

I’m an addict. A sistah is in need! I, too, am a card carrying, book toting member of OOSA. My wow read would have to be Kola Boof’s “Diary of a Lost Girl.” This is an exceptional work with a unique voice! Much love to Toni, Tracy, LaDonna and the rest of the gang. Thank you APOOO for having us.
Congrats OOSA! I am enjoying reading about all the bookclubs out in cyber space and finding out all the interesting things they do.
My last WOW book was Pleasure by Eric Jerome Dickey and Seduction by Geneva Holliday.
For Motown Review I would say our last WOW book was Sacred Place by Daniel Black followed by My Soul Cries Out by Sherri Lewis
OOSA… OOSA… OOSA… OOSA…
I love this group of wonderful, intelligent and dedicated readers! At first I was leery thinking an online book club wouldn’t provide the same satisfaction as a book club that would actually get together on a regularly basis. Let me tell you something, I was wrong! My sisters’ in books are super supportive!!! Whether online, im’s, text, email, telephone, we utilize it! And please believe when we all get together for meet & greets, you better watch out!!! **AM I MY SISTAS KEEPER!!!** Yas/APOOO, this is a wonderful idea. I’m so happy that OOSA, as well as the other book clubs being featured, have the opportunity to introduce themselves.
WOW book for me is ‘Shortie Like Mine’ I did not expect to love that book the way in which I did. For OOSA I’m going to have to agree with my sis Thug Politics was all that!
I forgot to say that I love OOSA!!!!
Hi OOSA!
Congratulations on your APOOO feature. I am so glad that Yasmin is taking the time to show recognition to online book clubs. I wish more agents/publicists would. You ladies are doing a wonderful thing. Book Clubs can be an unknown author’s best friend.
I am also glad that I had a chance to have my book reviewed by you lovely ladies. When you reviewed my book, THE BLUES FOR ANNIE MAE I was definitely an author feeling the deep down blues. Your stellar review really lifted my spirits and gave me the needed encouragement to press on. I just want to thank you for that.Take care Ladies, God bless and continue the good work.

Hello to my OOSA family. Anyone that knows me knows I love to read. Fittingly, I recently found a home with OOSA, a group of ladies that take reading seriously and where my addiction doesn’t seem so crazy. Amongst this crew I’m not the only one that can read a book in a day. I discovered so many new and self-published authors that I doubt I would have heard of before. Kudos to OOSA and I’m glad to be apart of the family.
My last WOW read was YOU, ME & HE by Brooke Green.
Holding it down for the brothers on lock. Even though they were not able to be with us literally today, they took the time to call with well wishes. Love is love!

Congrats again to OOSA! I love their bookclub and they have supported me for years. I have learned from their members, been praised by them (and critiqued hard, smile) but it made me a better writer. I’m glad to see them here on Apooo. I think one of my favorite moments was a live chat we did online, it was a blast. Hope to see you all at the Infini Awards and of course look for a shout out in my next book. Peace to you and yours from the south side of Chicago.

Dera’s last blog post..I’ve Been Tagged
OOSA has been in my corner from day one, showing love to my first novel, Nan: The Trifling Times of Nathan Jones. I remember seeing the name “Nardsbaby” on a lot of different reviews on Amazon.com. The reviews were always insightful, and when my 1st novel was released I hoped that Crystal or someone from O.O.S.A. would take the time to read my book. Their reviews are always straight up and honest and you can really tell that they took the time to actually read and dissect each book. Ms. Toni has been instrumental in helping my novels gain exposure, and I truly would not have been able to achieve the success that I have up to this point without them. Keep striving ladies. You deserve every honor and award that you receive. You have my back, and you know that I have yours.
My, My, My…well where should I start…the sisters of OOSA are nothing but the truth…their reviews are honest, real and definitely straight, no chaser…it is because of their uncanny ability to tell it like it is, authors have nothing but respect for their opinion and garner a sense of integrity when they see a review posted by “Nardsbaby” or anyother member of OOSA…I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE you all, and you know this…and to Crystal, who keeps me motivated and laughing, know that mean the world to me…you’ve been a shoulder for me to cry on, an ear for me to whisper in, a backbone when I was weak and a true friend!! As an author, I thank you for reminding me exactly why i do what I do…continue to be blessed and do what it do…on behalf of the writing community, I applaud you OOOSA, for your effortless contributions.
OOSA is more than just reading and reviewing, it is sisterhood!
LaDonna’s last blog post..Louise gave 4 stars to: Doing His Time (Who Said Dating A Baller Was Easy?)
Hey Ladies of OOSA,
Dag you caught me slipping and that is so not like me. From the first time you ladies began reviewing my books you have show me so much love and support and there are no words to convey how much I appreciate it, but I will try to express my love for you guys with these two small words, THANK YOU! You always keep it real and told the truth even if it wasn’t always gumdrops and lollipops. You have made me and every author you come in contact with strive to be better at our chosen craft with your honest and insightful reviews. Fabulous and Neyo said it best so I’m stealing their line. OOSA I’m a movement by myself but I’m a force when we work together. OOSA I’m good all by myself but ladies you make me better… (corny huh? LOL)
A huge CONGRATS, you ladies definitively deserve every bit of this recognition. Sorry it took me a minute to get over here and show my support and thank you know who for that little reminder, I won’t name names.
And thank you Ms Toni for always sending out those informative and funny emails. With you I always know what’s going on and you keep me laughing, especially on the days when I could really use a good laugh.
Much love to each and everyone of you ladies!!!!!!!!

To the wonderful ladies of OOSA…I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you all on your success and you are truly an example of what a book club should be. No words can express the appreciation I have for your support of my literary works and for writers all over the country. More than anything, I feel as if I’ve found great friends in this industry who I trust to be fair about literature and who are so dedicated to making sure every author’s voice is heard. I can honestly say…without you all believing in me, supporting me, and sharing my books with readers from all over the world, my career would not be where it stands today. Ms. Toni, you know what time it is, and from my heart to yours…thank you, thank you and thank you again. I’ll see you at the next book signing, which I know will be soon. LaDonna, I know you’re still waiting on your role as Scorpio, and I assure you that “I GOT YOU” and we’re on our way to the top. Your reviews inspire me even more to give all that I can to readers, and right along with Crystal’s reviews too, you ladies keep me on top of my game! When I’m writing a book, I often think…”If I don’t get this right, OOSA gon’ eat me up!” I trust you all to do so, so keep up the good work, alright? You are the best at what you do, and I must give a big shout out to APOO for offering the best as well. God Bless you all…

Let’s go OOSA, Let’s go!!!
Let’s go OOSA, Let’s go!!!
Let’s go OOSA, Let’s go!!!
My name is Lauren and I’m OOSA’s teen reviewer. Before I started reading books outside of school work, I didn’t think that I had much of a love for reading. Boy was I wrong. My cousin opened my eyes to the wonderful world of reading and since, I’ve been reading everything I could get my hands on.
I’m sending some reading love to my entire reading family, you ladies truly inspire me.
CONGRATS team O-O-S-A!
To Ms. Toni and the Ladies of OOSA, congratulations on your feature. I am the owner of a book store. BOOK LADY, aka Ms. Toni, is always on point with her book recommendations to my customers. What you are doing is a wonderful thing. Toni you’re the greatest!

Congrats to the ladies of OOSA. I’m glad to be a part of the OOSA family and I know that OOSA will continue to grow with all the work that Ms. Toni and Crystal have put in. I wish you all nothing but success and much love!
Congrats OOSA Book Club Members. Thank you for your devotion to authors both new, and seasoned. It is a blessing to be read and reviewed by such avid readers who are willing to give the needed feedback to authors. I love your site, your encouragement, and the excitement you add to this sometime frustrating art. I wish you all success and keep on doing what you do best. You mean a lot to authors new to the world of literacy. Again thank you and much success!!
Way to go OOSA Online Book Club. Thank you for your continued support of Tru Publishing.
Peace & Blessings,
The Tru Family
You ladies are extremely talented.
I am still getting to know OOSA, I do know they are big in the literary world concerning all the hottest authors, new and old. The last book I just read was “Ace of Hearts” by Jean Holloway and two of my favorite authors (different genres) are Al-Saadiq Banks and Bernice L. McFadden aka Geneva Holliday, every one of their books are a 5 star read.
WAY TO GO OOSA!!!
greatly appreciate your support, reviews and just your true love of the written word!!! Thank you again for being the best at what you do and one of the greatest book club out there!!!!!
To the OOSA Bookclub and MS. TONI..thank you so much for your continued support and presence in the literary world. Authors, especially me

What makes your book club unique and different from any other book club? The most obvious we believe is that we read three books together as a group each month. Being for real avid readers, one book simply doesn’t satisfy the urge.
I can read that many and more myself in a month. But, how do you get your club to collectively read that many?
Collectively, a WOW book for us presently has been Little Black Girl Lost. We just finished book 1 and plan to read book 2 and 3.
My WOW book for me was The Darkest Child by Delores Phillips. I’ve read it three times. On my own and, BOM with my club and another club.
Great job. Much success. Need more book clubs like you.
Hey Tasha,
Thanks for checking in. What we ask in advance is that all OOSA members be committed. A commitment means agreeing to read and review the books of the month as a group. Not to say that we haven’t hit a few snags here and there, but with everything you have to start and then roll with the punches. Truthfully, the hardest thing has been picking only three books! We’ve been known to roll with more on some occasions.
Crystal,

Thanks Nardsbaby’s for the reply. The ladies in my club are committed to reading and reviewing our BOM. I wonder what would happen if I sprung 2 yet alone 3 books on them in a month. That would have been perfect last month considering were reading all 3 books of Little Black Girl Lost.
Tasha try it. Are you’ll reviewing and chatting? I would so recommend chatting with Keith Lee Johnson. He is such an intersting person. I love all of his books.
Try reading books with sequels already out, that way you’ll can collectively agree to read the books together. I can make some suggestions if you’ll would like.
Be careful though, you don’t won’t to push it and you want it to remain fun for all. Keep me posted. I also added you to my myspace.

Yes, we are reviewing and chatting Narsbaby. Chatting with Mr. Johnson would be nice and I’m sure my members would agree. I’ll look him up and see if and when he’s available.
I’m not very good with checking myspace often (1, my job won’t allow access to it)…trying to get better.
Thanks!
I’m sorry I am a few days late and a dollar short but I’m here. Best wishes to OOSA Online Book Club. You have my continued support. You all are a group with a serious passion for reading and you always keep it real with your reviews. I know if OOSA said it’s good then it’s good. Keep those book recommendations coming. Keep supporting authors the way you do.
I just want to give a shout out to the ladies of OOSA. I appreciate all the support you’ve shown me and my company Hollygrove Publishing. Keep up the good work!
Best Wishes,

Hi Toni and the rest of the OOSA fam. I was an OOSA reviewer until my schedule got too crazy. Hopefully things will even out and I’ll be back. I’d like to thank OOSA for the chance to review with such a great group of women and for introducing me to so many new authors and books.
Hi Toni and the rest of the OOSA family. I was a reviewer for OOSA until my schedule became too crazy. I hope things will even out soon so I can get back to reading and reviewing. I’d like to thank OOSA for the chance to review for such a wonderful group of women and for introducing me to so many new authors and books.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all those that took the time out of their day to stop by and leave OOSA a comment. We appreciate all the continued love and support, especially to our family members who put up with our constant reading and chatting and understood. To our authors, where would we be without you??? We know you’re busy writing those books we love so much so we really THANK YOU for coming through. Fellow readers, looking for a good read…we recommend any of the authors above that left comments. And please, please, please write reviews for them if you like their books.
Thank you APOOO for the opportunity to not only be featured but the chance to get to know other book clubs and book lovers and we look forward to future literary and networking opportunities. Who said we don’t read?!?!?!
Again, thank you to each and every one that came by. Joseph Addison said it best: “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” Let’s work out!
