In honor of the literary contributions that African American male authors have made, APOOO members decided that we could not wrap up the month without a favorite male author’s list. After all we are a literary site and avid readers–so we have a few favorite authors to tell others about. We brainstormed and came up with approximately 150 male authors! In honor of Men in Black month, and June having 30 days, we decided to create a list with 30 of our favorite authors–one author representing each day. We are delighted to present the authors who made our list (listed in alphabetical order):
Michael Baisden
James Baldwin
Colin Channer
Kwame Dawes
Eric Jerome Dickey
WEB Dubois
Michael Eric Dyson
Ralph Ellison
Ernest Gaines
Nelson George
Donald Goines
Alex Haley
Gary Hardwick
E. Lynn Harris
Langston Hughes
Travis Hunter
RM Johnson
Edward P. Jones
James McBride
Nathan McCall
Victor McGlothin
Marcus Major
Brandon Massey
Walter Mosley
C. Kelly Robinson
Tavis Smiley
Omar Tyree
Carl Weber
Richard Wright
Now, we would like to fine-tune our list and we would like for you to help us. Based upon the list above, a poll has been created and we ask you to help us whittle the list down by voting for your Top 10 Favorite African American male authors. If one of your favorites isn’t listed, feel free to write in the name. Also, because we want to get as many folks as possible to vote, please tell your friends about the survey. So that it will be meaningful and newsworthy, ideally I would like to have at least 1000 folks vote! If I tell ten people and you tell ten people, we should easily exceed this objective.
LET’S GET BUSY–voting and spreading the word so that we can create the Top 10 Favorite African American authors of all-times! CLICK HERE to vote for your favorite African-American male authors. Poll will be open until July 7th, 2008 and winners will be announced by July 15th, 2008.

I would like to add Alvin Lloyd Alexander Horn author of Brushstrokes to the list.
Thanks Michelle and got it!
Alvin Lloyd Alexander Horn, author of “Brushstrokes” would also deserve to claim his rightful place on the honored list and I would like to see his name added. Thank-you
Susan, thanks for your comment and clarification–authors are placed on the list based upon receiving reader votes and placing in the Top 10 nominees. So, if Alvin has enough votes to get him into the Top 10 he will be added to list…but please note that it’s the READERS CHOICES and while every author would like to be on the list…they really need to make sure that readers are aware of them…reading their books…and promoting their books via word of mouth…like what you are doing.
Please add Alvin Lloyd Alexander Horn to your list of Top 10 nominees!
