Michelle Obama and I Are Sisters

To all my sorors–’THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS MATTER’–LOL.

Greetings to all!  It is with great pleasure that APOOO points this week’s spotlight on the lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha and my soon-to-be neophyte sister, MICHELLE OBAMA.  SKEE-WEE!  Give it up, give it up, give up!

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority

Yes, Michelle Obama and I will soon be family(she is expected to be inducted into the sorority later this week) and we got all our sisters with us! Started in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha was the first African-American greek sorority founded by 16  talented, intelligent, and ordinary women with an extraordinary vision.  Since its inception, the organization has grown to include over 200,000 women around the world.

This week over 20,000 sorors will gather in Washington, DC, where it all began 100 years ago, to celebrate our Centennial.  Although, I am not physically there, I am there in spirit and want to send out shouts to ALL my sorors and especially my line sisters all Sweet Sixteen of us from Iota Beta’s/Spring Line 1977, members of my graduate chapter, Epsilon Sigma Omega and all the sorors I have had the pleasure of meeting in the last 32 years!  Oh the long-last friendships, the fond memories, our chants:

When we wake up in the morning

And get out of bed

We look into the mirror

And we shake our pretty heads

We are conceited

And that’s no lie

We’ll be conceited AKAs until the day we die,

LOL…anyone who has ever stepped in a Step Show knows that the competitiveness comes out as we ALL think our sorority or fraternity is the best…well hmmm let me just put all the rest to bed…because it’s all about AKAs today…:)

On a more serious note, the founders would be SO PROUD OF US TODAY as we have embraced their vision and grown from a few to thousands of multi-talented, diverse women.  I know that some of the gains I have made and enjoyed today have been because of this wonderful sisterhood.  I have moved and lived all over the country as well as visited various cities, states and even other countries, but even when I travel solo, I never feel alone because I know that no matter where I am, there is an Alpha Kappa Alpha sister in whatever location that I can call on.  And yes I have leaned on the shield and called a few sisters–sometimes in the very wee hours of the morning. LOL.  In fact, because of the professionalism, friendliness, and willingness of a soror to take me under her wings, I moved to Hershey/Harrisburg, PA.  Hershey Foods called but it was my soror who helped me to weigh my options and decide to relocate.  If not for her, I do not believe I would have relocated to Pensatucky.  LOL.  Some 20 years later, I am still here, and although my soror has moved on I know that I am always welcome to grace her doorstep and make myself comfortable at her home.

So this week’s Triumphant Tuesday blog is dedicated to all my sorors as each of you are truly triumphant women who have made a difference in someone’s life as we strive in service to all mankind.  Through the years, efforts have been directed toward improving the quality of life for all mankind while living the Sorority motto, ‘by culture and by merit.’

In closing, what do you say to an organization that is 100 years old?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND MANY MORE!

What do you say, to the women who have bonded and are still coming together to join our sisterhood?

And, to the founders of this illustrious sorority, we greet thee:

UPDATE–Have any of you seen the new AKA collector’s Barbie doll?  I think I might actually breakdown and get one since Lauren collects Barbies. ;)

  1. Hey Soror. I was beyond excited when I got the news about Michelle Obama. However, what do you think about this…I read that she has agreed to a non-exclusive membership, meaning that she can become a member of other Greek lettered organizations( namely other sororities)?

  2. Hey Azure and thanks for stopping by.
I read that non-exclusive membership clause also…and here’s my two cents.
First, I hope that was a misunderstanding that will be corrected before she’s inducted. Being apart of our sisterhood does not mean that she will not be able to associate and support other social/service sororities, but it does mean that she will not be able to have membership in them. If Michelle does not believe that she can support/associate with them without being a member, then AKA needs to resend the offer.
Second, once she has experienced our illustrious sisterhood and becomes involved, she will not have the desire to join any other organization. :)
Third, if the governing body of AKA agrees to that compromise then we are going against one of our basic principles(I’ll start with integrity…) as well as the guidelines of the Divine Nine.
Fourth, if it is allowed for Michelle, then ithe rules need to be changed for all sisters because all of us are supposed to be created equally and treated accordingly.
Fifth, in the spirit of the Divine Nine, hopefully none of the other sororities will allow her to become an honorary member and therefore it becomes a moot point.
Sixth, We are Family and we take a pledge to this sorority, hopefully when Michelle takes that pledge, if it goes against anything that she aspires to do, then she will JUST SAY NO.
Finally, if she Just Says No, I will miss her but I will respect her for being her own individual and deciding that our sisterhood is not right for her at this point, this time in her life and not making a mockery of the vision that the Founders had 100 years ago.

  3. First, congratulations to the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha on this very important anniversary year! 100 years is a wonderful achievement!

Second, you know I’m too salty you all are getting Michelle Obama… She just seems like a Delta to me… ;-)

All jokes aside, Happy Anniversary, you’re right, your founders would be proud.

    Much love,

    Gwyneth

  4. Gwyneth–rotflmao…hehe…glad we got her FIRST. ;)

  5. That would be THIRTY ONE years soror. 77 is the year I was born. Don’t be adding no extra years on this old body now! LOL!

My line was 16 too! “Top 16 of the 98.”

What a wonderful tribute here. Isn’t this WONDERFUL news?! I was on my way to bed at like 1:30am when I heard the news and had to fire back up the computer to post something on my blog. I am too excited. I am a Michelle stan so this is the best news I’ve heard in a while. She made the right choice ;)

By the way I am probably SO late with this but the site looks GREAT. Very much improved. I love the color scheme. It just feels warm. I haven’t been reading much lately (not sure why) but I intend to dig in and take a look around at what I been missing. Maybe it will light a spark. I especially appreciate the All Time Favorite list. I want to check that against my own list.

Kudos and pink and green hugs!

  6. Very well put Soror. I couldn’t agree with more with your response to my original post. I guess we’ll see what happens. Have a lovely pink and green day!!!!

    Sisterly,

    Azure

  7. VT/Danielle…rotflmao…and I like your line name as well! Thanks so much for stopping by and sis –like you–I haven’t been reading very much either. Site took a lot of my time to get it up and now I’m just tired…lol. So, soror, since you’re in the area, will you be attending any of the Boule events?

Azure–Thank you and yes we will have to see what happens…and a lovely pink and green day to you.

  8. @yas - to answer the question you posed on my blog, according to the blog below, it was never the plan for it to happen this week. i think it would be too much of a security risk. you should have seen what we had to go through on my job when O Man was in the building meeting with the big whigs. elevator shut down. street closing. secret service staked all outside. i’m not 100% sure but i think it will likely happen privately - probably while she is home in chi town. after reading some of the comments on this post, it’s probably a good thing. people are nuts. the convention center is way too massive and there are too many sorors to secure it properly i would think. but we’ll see…

Oh and I’m not active right now so haven’t been able to do much.

I will likely get a dollie too :)

  9. Sis you’re right about the crazy comments and hmmm I need to send you a private email because I’m disturbed by something that I heard earlier today.
