OUT OF MY MIND by Sharon Draper is about Melody, an 11 year-old girl who cannot talk, walk or write. Although, she has many thoughts swirling around in her head, it is just hard for her to get them out. People are not very nice to her and call her names and hurt her feelings. Melody is treated like a baby, she has to be taken to the bathroom and has to be fed and Melody really does not like being treated as such.

Little does anyone know she is smarter than most people and given a new opportunity she will be able to show everyone what has been swirling around in her head and the things she has retained from listening to others around her for so long. Near the end of the book she commits a courageous act that will make her mom really see Melody in a different light.

OUT OF MY MIND by Sharon Draper was a pretty good read. It was a story about a little girl that others underestimate. It just goes to prove that when others think that just because you are in a wheelchair and are unable to talk out loud, it does not mean that you are not smart or have thoughts that we want to hear. I can see how having all those thoughts swirling around in your head would make someone feel like they are going out of their mind. It was a fascinating read.
