Getting to Know Marilynn Griffith, author of Mom’s The Word

marilyn-griffithTell us about yourself.

I’m not to exciting. I love books and math, love to hang out with family and friends, love Jesus and have a tendency to be quite silly at times.

What type of jobs or careers have you worked in the past?

Great question! Day care worker (not so much), secretary (hmmm…), TCBY yogurt maker (yummy!), Mickey D’s ($3.35 an hour, people!), math tutor and instructional assistant (lots of this. I enjoy it) and of course, writer and mom!

Who are your favorite authors?

Too many to count. I really am an eclectic reader. My favorites are a mishmash of latest releases from my friends (Lisa Samson, Claudia Mair Burney, Sharon Ewell Foster, Tom Davis, Stacy Hawkins Adams, Angela Benson…) to a variety of dead people (Countee Cullen, Ann Petry, Charlotte Bronte…) with a healthy dose of YA, sci-fi, fantasy and whatever suits my fancy thrown in. Oh, and biographies. I love those.

What are your favorite books?

Hmmm… Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, Roots by Alex Haley… Too many.

When did you begin to realize you wanted to write?

When I was about four and penned “The Tales of Super Banana.” Who knew produce stories would one day be the rage?

Tell us about your journey to publication.

It was a strange one. I wrote a book (Rhythms of Grace) that was soundly rejected by all publishers yet got me an agent and two interested publishers. I decided that I’d just take the next ten years to learn and let my imagination have fun and just do some proposals and…I got two deals for a total of six books. It was a trip. Still  is.

Are you a full-time writer? If so, describe your day?

I was a full time writer and mom for about five years. I’ve since gone back to work and am still making the transition from isolation to immersion. However, I do enjoy all the people watching opportunities and feel my “tank” of stories is refilling by being out in the world.

About the Book

When her tall, dark, delicious husband joins their three kids in calling her “Mom,” Karol Simons has an identity crisis. Sure she loves the pint-size trio, but what’s happened to her dreams of writing a novel? Determined to have it all, she turns to her neighbor for help.

Dyanne Thornton is thrilled to stand in as Mom for three weeks so Karol can write. Bursting with baby fever, the career-woman trades her glamorous clothes and four-inch heels for the playground and potty training. She hopes to convince her reluctant husband they should start a family of their own, right away.

Everyone’s in for some big surprises…
