Todays MUSING MONDAYS post is a question fromScobberlotch” who asks:

How has the economy impacted your book buying? Do you think it’ll change the reading and book-buying habits of the country? Will it increase your library visits? Will it make you wait for the paperback edition instead of buying the hardcover?

The questions above have been asked a lot and I’ve answered them a lot…LOL…but for the sake of this meme I will repeat my answers.

How has the economy impacted your book buying?   Slightly…books are one of my favorite guilty pleasures…but thanks to review books and winning books from other blogger contests I really don’t have to buy that many…so the economy has only impacted my purchasing power un poco…but I think more of this might be due to the fact that there just aren’t that many books out that I want to purchase. :(

Do you think it’ll change the reading and book-buying habits of the country?   For avid readers no…and if we look at what happened doing the Great Depression…books actually didn’t take a big dive because guess what…publishers came up with BOOK RETURNS…which some almost 80 years later are still with us! CLICK HERE TO READ Short Stacks article titled Hard Time Lits.  Seems when the going gets rough…book buying just keeps on ticking.

Will it increase your library visits?–Yep which actually isn’t a bad thing…I need to check out more books from the library…rather than buying them…esp. since I’m not a book collector.

Will it make you wait for the paperback edition instead of buying the hardcover?  Nope…if it’s a book that I really want and the library doesn’t have it…I’ll purchase a copy of it…esp. since many hardcover books at amazon are 30% off; Borders–40% off and Half.com–50% off.

  1. Do you think it’ll change the reading and book-buying habits of the country?
I hope not. With the way things are in the world, people still need a cheap way to escape and buying a book or going to the movies are the cheapest forms of entertainment.

Will it increase your library visits?
I’m a frequent library visitor. I like to see what books are popular or not and librarians are some of the best folks to tell you that.

Will it make you wait for the paperback edition instead of buying the hardcover?
I’m all for paperback editions. The only time I do hardcover these days is if I order from Blackexpressions.

  2. How has the economy impacted your book buying?

yes… I use to have a budget of $100 a month (my guilty pleasure) but It has been cut in half and i am greatful for the review books because i have been introduced to writers I would not ordinarily pick up. I have also been entering more on line contest for gift cards, free books etc.

Do you think it’ll change the reading and book-buying habits of the country?

    For Avid readers – NO

Will it increase your library visits?–

Yes… my only problem is the they have crazy hours so I have to get a better schedule. they also can reserve books for you on line so I want to look into that also.

Will it make you wait for the paperback edition instead of buying the hardcover?

    Yes.. :-(

  3. How has the economy impacted your book buying? It has made me be more aware of coupons and % off sales.

Do you think it’ll change the reading and book-buying habits of the country? I don’t really think that it will change much. I have noticed decreased shopping in general stores, but not at the book store.

Will it increase your library visits? I have decided that I need to look at going back to the library more.

Will it make you wait for the paperback edition instead of buying the hardcover? No. If I want it I want it, but I am not opposed to paperbacks.

  4. Lashonda I hear you about the coupons…they are a big help!

  5. I agree on your hardcover vs. paperback comment.

If I really want to read a book and the library doesn’t have it available (as often happens with new releases and wait lists), I’ll buy it despite it being hardcover. And, as much as I love my indie bookstore in town, I’ll buy it at a discount store if I’m shopping near one (but I won’t drive out of my way … the “big boxes” are about 10 miles away, so I have to be out anyway to shop there).
