He Makes Her Feel Like A…

A Natural Woman by Lori Johnson is one of the best books I have read this year. The storytelling is filled with humor and wit and the characters are so relatable. Before I even tell you about the storyline, I recommend this book to all readers.

Aliesha is a Professor of Anthropology and is mostly satisfied with her life. What she is not satisfied with is her love life. She is dating Javiel, a Latin man, and though things are okay, they are just, okay. Aliesha is also not pleased with her hair. Her beautician has died and her natural hair is looking pretty shabby. One day, by chance she decides to go to Wally’s Cool Cuts barbershop for a haircut and her life and her hair changes, immediately. She meets barber, Dante, who reads Kafka and listens to Curtis Mayfield. The attraction between the two is immediate, but neither is really in a position to make a move. Aliesha is concerned about her current entanglement, and Dante is worried about being taken for granted again. He is a sensitive brother and has discovered that sometimes women simply say they want a sensitive man. Besides, he has a long time involvement of his own that needs correcting.

A Natural Woman is a love story, but it is also a story about community, race, skin color and choices. Ms. Johnson has an amazing way with words that gets the reader wrapped and tied up in the story. I felt as though I knew these people and was unsure who to root for. What I do know is that I root for Ms. Johnson and her storytelling abilities. A Natural woman is a winner.

  1. Angelia,
I’m interested in reading this book. I love the cover. Ms. Johnson’s agent spoke at our last writers group meeting and share an interesting story about the coverart for this book. You could tell she was very proud to represent her as a client, and I could tell by the other books she shared by her client’s that she’s very selective. I expect a great read.

  2. Ms. Menchan, I thank you SO MUCH for your kind words. I am particularly thrilled that you picked up on the fact that a A NATURAL WOMAN is more than just a love story or a fanciful tale about a woman obsessed with her hair.

Rhonda, yes, my agent, Janell Walden Agyeman, is a gem and I am fortunate to have her in my corner. Also, there was, indeed, a bit of behind-the-scenes drama with regards to the original cover, lol. But we eventually arrived at a workable compromise. If nothing else, I think the current cover conveys the essence of the main character, Professor Aliesha Eaton . . . Glad you like it. Hope you enjoy the story just as much! :-)
