In 140 words or less, tell us a little about you. My life is in such transition, I don’t know who I am right now. After fifteen years, I just quit my career as a physician to chase my life-long dream of being an artist. I love to write and create – books, both fiction and non-fiction, and music. I love to sing and dance. I also have been in training for ministry for a million years (okay, really only 19) and love to teach with a special emphasis on women’s ministry.
In 140 words or less, tell us why your book would make a great addition to our personal library. My new novel, The List, is about single, successful, saved but still sexy African American women who are tired of waiting on God to bring their soul mate. With the stats these days showing that almost 50% of African American women will never marry, The List is a book that most women of color can relate to, either personally or through one of her close friends. I tried to take what can be a painful situation and make it as funny as possible. That wasn’t hard to do, I just included some of the hilariously ridiculous dates me and some of my friends have been on in the past few years. By the time the book is over, you’ll feel like you have a new set of sistahfriends and hopefully some valuable lessons about life and love.
What was your favorite 2008 moment? Are you kidding? When they announced that Barack Obama was the 44th President of the United States of America. Has there ever been a more exciting moment? I cried, jumped, and screamed all over my living room.
If you were to choose any fictitious world in any piece of literature, which place or book would you live in and why? For real, I think I would become a character in The List and marry my favorite character, Isaiah. I am so in love with him! It’s so difficult creating a character that’s the perfect man and then he’s stuck in the pages of the book. The only way I can spend time with him is to read the book again.
President Obama would like you to be his advisor for… what? The faith-based grant funding program. I really have a heart for the less fortunate and would love to help develop effective programs to deal with hunger and homelessness, at- risk inner-city youth, teenage pregnancy, and so many other societal ills.
A fairy taps you on the shoulder and tells you that you can either have a perfect face or a perfect body for the rest of your life. Which do you choose? Wow, can I choose a perfect heart? That’s what I’d prefer. I guess I’d pick the perfect face. I can always get the perfect body in the gym.
If you had to be the mother of Fantasia or Lil’ Kim, who would you choose and why? Definitely Fantasia. I think she’s a beautiful strong, gifted, resilient woman who’s accomplished so much in her life so far.
You have just been hired to clean your own home, what is your first complaint? I’m single with no kids, so my house stays pretty neat. I guess I’d complain about my writing room. It’s filled with stacks of paper, unopened mail, and stacks of book. Neat stacks of course.
What is the biggest surprise you ever have had and was it a good one? You don’t want to know…and no it wasn’t a good surprise at all.
Of all your favorite foods, which one would you find the most difficult to give up for the rest of your life? Why? Chocolate. As long as I’m a hormonal woman, chocolate MUST be a part of my life. As long as men will be men, chocolate MUST be a part of my life. Sometimes it’s the only thing that fixes it!
Which season of the year do you think best describes your personality? Why? Spring. Except for when I’m hormonal, I’m a very bubbly person. I’m happy, laugh loud and try to bring joy to everyone around me. If I’m hormonal, give me chocolate, lock me in the house and stay away until it’s over.
If you could be a contestant on any game show, past or present, which show would you pick? Why? What’s the show where they open the briefcases and you win money without having to answer any difficult trivia questions that only boring brainiacs know? (You can tell I’m not a TV watcher) LOL and I think that show might be Deal or No Deal.
