Q. In 140 words or less, tell readers about Trice Hickman.
A. I’m a Southern girl through and through. I grew up in a small town on the eastern coast of North Carolina. From as early as I can remember I’ve always loved books. Reading was a great escape for me. I could meet interesting people and travel to new places, all without leaving my bedroom! So, it’s no wonder that I became a writer–a way for me to escape into the words I so love! I feel extremely blessed to be able to live my dream of being a published author. When I’m not writing you can find me cooking, decorating, doing home improvement projects, and my favorite pastime…shopping!
Q. In 140 words or less, tell readers why Playing the Hand You’re Dealt would make a great addition to our personal library.
A. Playing the Hand You’re Dealt, will make a great addition your private library because it’s a book you’ll want to read over and over again! From the in-your-face action, to the many twists and turns, to the unforgettable, three-dimensional characters who drive the unfolding plot, PTHYD will having you turning the pages to see what’s going to happen next. As one of the main characters says in the opening line, “What do you do when you know right from wrong, and you know that what you’re about to do is dead wrong, but you decide to do it anyway?” When a book starts off like this, you know there’s going to be conflict, which I think makes for an interesting story!
Q. How did you come up with the plot for Playing the Hand You’re Dealt?
A. I came up with the plot for PTHYD, through observation and exploring the question, “what if?” The story is about two women whose long-standing friendship is tested when one friend sleeps with the other friend’s father. This kind of situation is not uncommon–a friend becoming involved with their friend’s boyfriend, husband, fiance, etc. But I thought, hmmm, what if it was your father instead of your man? It’s still a man that you love, and the emotions of hurt and betrayal still sting, yet they are experienced in an entirely different way.
Q. Are you working on another book and, if so, can you share a brief summary with us?
A. Yes, I’m actually working on two books right now! The plots are still developing and the characters are still revealing themselves to me, which is so exciting. One of the books, my fourth, which will be released summer 2011, is about a young woman who is a sex and relationship advice columnist for a big city newspaper. But she’s hiding a big secret that she doesn’t want anyone know–she’s really living a sexless existence! That is, until a mysterious stranger comes along who changes her life forever. I believe this book will empower women to find and claim the beauty of their spirit and their sexuality. My fifth book is an interesting boy meets girl story. A female corporate executive meets a blue color carpenter and sparks fly! It explores social stratification in a way that will really have readers thinking about who we are innately, versus who we are as a result of our environment. I’m having a ball writing both of these stories!
Q. Thus far, what has been your favorite 2010 moment?
A. Wow, I’ve had so many great moments this year (because each day that I wake up is a true blessing), that it’s really hard to choose. But, I’d have to say the day that my third book arrived at my house from the printer. That was a great moment!
Q. What are your most overused words or phrases?
A. “You know?”
Q. What is your biggest pet peeve?
A. The Tea Party
Q. What is your most surprising talent or interest – the one that makes people say “I didn’t know you (did/liked/knew)…”?
A. I LOVE doing home improvement projects! I have a tool belt and a power drill and I know how to use them! I re-hung my kitchen cabinets!
Q. What’s one song that people would be surprised to know is on your IPod (or in your music collection)?
A. Can I Get A, by Jay-Z
Q. Name five things that make your world go round.
A. God, love, family, words, and chocolate ice cream!
Q. Trice thanks for taking time out of your busy schedules and spending a few with APOOO.
A. Thank you for having me! The pleasure has been all mine!

Great interview! Can’t wait to read the next things you have to offer. I’m reading PTHYD right now and I like it.
Trice, I wish I could do my own home improvement. I have so much I want to do here and don’t want to pay anyone to do it.
Much success in all you do.

What a lovely interview. I was definitely won over by the pet peeve! But actually, I was won over quite earlier, this looks like a great book and will be on my backlist of to-reads
